Giggs' hamstring injury flared up again against Liverpool and although Alex Ferguson took the Welsh wizard off immediately, it was not enough to save his campaign. The worry for Johnsen is perhaps the greater, Johnsen sustained ankle and shin injuries following Michael Owens' one man rampage around Old Trafford, the young striker eventually saw red after his second late, late challenge. The good news is that there is no break, and there's even been talk of Johnsen being back for the game against Crystal Palace in a fortnight, although at this stage such talk is a little premature. Whether Johnsen will figure again in the Premiership remains to be seen, but the Norwegian international should at least be fully fit to represent his country in the World Cup finals in France. It would be a fitting finale to a superb season if the Norway star is able pit his skills against the finest strikers in the world. All I can add is that you can not judge Stam on the basis of this one game. Belgium has played twice against Holland in the qualifying round for the World Cup and on both occasions I hate to admit that Stam was my MOTM. He was superb, both in offence (scoring a superb header) and in defence. After that game I sent an e-mail to the mailing lists because I had heard the commentator saying that United were interested in Stam. Despite the obvious pain of seeing Holland beat Belgium, I was upbeat at the prospect of Stam joining United. IMHO, this could prove to be THE buy for the coming years. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hope that United can sign the man, especially after he has shown so much interest and desire to sign for United. What a differenct to Babbel who would not sign because he would not earn enough money. Stam even wants to give up some money to be able to join United, if that is not enough proof, then I don't know what is. Greeting from a Belgian Red with fingers crossed!! The Dutch club are desperate to hold on to their highly-coveted central defender, but they realise they cannot keep him when he is so keen to move to Old Trafford. PSV will hold further talks with Stam, who is under contract until 2003, later this week to try and persuade him to stay for one more season. Those discussions are bound to fail because Stam has set his heart on joining United before the World Cup Finals begin in June. PSV spokesman Pedro Salazar-Hewitt said: 'We've already talked to Jaap Stam twice and there's going to be another meeting, I don't know when, but some time this week,' he said. 'The discussions are just to see what Jaap Stam wants and we want to keep him for at least one year more. 'If he still says that he wants to go and the price Manchester United want to pay is good, then he will go. 'You can't keep an unhappy player - that's the reality of the situation - because an unhappy player is nothing. We don't want to sell Jaap Stam, but we have to think about it because he has said he wants to go.'

It's partly unfair to blame Blackburn for the debacle. Firstly they were missing both Sutton and Duff. Secondly the main problems, and the first three goals, all came down the right wing where a debutant was playing. Parlour was absolutely skinning him. Unfortunately for us, this was one of the games that we'd all marked down as one where Arsenal would drop points. The last six games played column of the table makes interesting reading. Ours is DLLWWD. Theirs is WWWWWW. There's still some hope - we need to win the rest of our games and hope that they drop some points. Their last two games are difficult - away at Liverpool and Villa. Do we deserve to win the title? For the performances in November and around, yes. For our overall performance, especially in 1998, no. We've lost seven games in the league - Arsenal have lost four. We've lost some games we should never have lost. Also, Arsenal beat us home and away. Obviously there are excuses - the loss of Keane for most of the season and Giggs for some of the season being paramount. The preview of the Blackburn match on teletext said Man U were back to full strength. What about Keano? So what are the lessons? It's obviously hazardous ground to go into interpreting what's happening within the side, but the following comments are I think worth making. 1. Last season's transfers have been largely disappointing, not necessarily from a playing point of view, but certainly from a Ferguson "fancying" them point of view (and I don't use that in a Wenger way!) Both Berg and Sheringham have been pointedly left out of the team and even the squad recently. I'm not surprised that Sheringham is said to be angry, especially with the world cup coming up. For the majority of the last two games we've been playing with Sheri on the bench, Scholes in the Sheri role, and Philip Neville in midfield. The obvious move would be to play Scholes in midfield and Sheri up front. Don't get me wrong, I think that Scholes is great in that position, and probably a better bet than Sheringham, but it must make Teddy very frustrated. It seems likely both will move during the summer, especially if we sign Stam. Teddy was always a short term measure anyway, until Scholes could step up. 2. We need another quality winger, to give more options especially if Giggs is injured. That was the whole strength of the Kan-Kan/Giggs/Sharpe era. Such creatures are difficult to find, although I seem to remember a youngster being touted about a year ago. Overmars, his name was. Wonder what happened to him?
