MANCHESTER UNITED DAILY NEWS SUNDAY 29th August 1999:

Barry Comment:
** Tomorrow Monday we play at 1300 hrs UK
Newcastle at home should be a new win
Ruud Gullit has resigned as manager of Newcastle United,
the Dutchman announcing his decision in a press conference at 11am.
Gullit stated in this morning's hastily convened conference that
the pressure and media attention had become too much to take,
and that he had not fulfilled the expectations of the Magpies' faithful.
Assistant Manager Steve Clarke has taken Gullit's role in a caretaker's
capacity, and will lead the team against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Monday.

Subject: United bid for Rivaldo MANCHESTER United are prepared to pay up to £30 million for Barcelona's star Brazilian striker Rivaldo, it was claimed yesterday. Sport newspaper, the bible of the Barcelona fans, claimed that United would pay Rivaldo £4 m signing-on fee for a five-year contract. The player would receive £3.2 m a season plus bonuses, a free house and a car. The Madrid newspaper, As, meanwhile claimed that the United offer was £25 m and said that Rivaldo had told Barcelona that he wanted to go. The 27-year-old, who scored 24 league goals last season, the second highest in Spain, is earning £1.8 m a season and has been offered a new deal by Barcelona, said the newspaper, which would swell his wages to £2.8 m a year. As said that Manchester are offering a clear tax-free £3.2 m a year. Three weeks ago Josep Luis Nunez, Barcelona's president, dismissed reported United interest in the player by saying: "Rivaldo is untouchable. We're not even going to listen to any offers for him. He is totally untransferable and that's final." He also pointed out that the player's breakaway clause was fixed at £60 m.
