Chelsea away tonight, a win required to go 2nd, one point ahead of Chelsea (2 behind Villa).
A draw would put us 3rd two points behind Chelsea.

Subject: PREMIERSHIP PREVIEW CHELSEA v MAN UTD
FERGUSON FIRED UP FOR CHELSEA
Alex Ferguson is fired up for Manchester United's
crucial Premiership showdown with Chelsea at
Stamford Bridge. The United chief's main doubts
surround £28m worth of talent forced to miss
Saturday's 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest with
Dwight Yorke, Jaap Stam and Andy Cole all having
treatment.
''We will have to see how they are before making
any decisions,'' he said. ''We have a very good
record at Chelsea. It's one of our favourite grounds
just as it is for Chelsea when they come to Old
Trafford. It's a strange situation. It will be a
smashing match and I think it has some significance
for the title race in that whoever wins will be doing
handstands. It's important for us that we win it.''
Gary Neville is available after missing Saturday's
win through suspension but will be out again on
Sunday after totting up five bookings. He misses the
FA Cup clash with Middlesbrough but could be back
at the expense of brother Phil, who was right-back
against Forest. Defender Ronny Johnsen, who
scored twice on Saturday, could lose his place if
Stam and Neville return but Ferguson may decide to
leave Johnsen in the side alongside the Dutchman.
The title race is the tightest it has been for years
with United, Chelsea, Aston Villa, Arsenal and Leeds
all up there fighting for the crown. It is in sharp
contrast to last year when United were well ahead
of the pack. ''Maybe this is a better situation for
us,'' Ferguson said. ''There are five teams who you
could say all have a chance and it looks as if it will
be a very tough and open league but as history
shows it usually boils down to two sides in the end.
''We have had one or two blips in the last few
weeks but have come through a very tough spell of
eight games in 24 days. They've got that out of the
way and will be able to concentrate on playing one
game a week for a while. That gives us time to
prepare and work on aspects of the game and that
is important.''
DESAILLY BACK FOR TITLE TEST
With Chelsea's title credentials set to undergo their
second examination by Manchester United within
the space of a fortnight, the stage is set for the
return of World Cup winner Marcel Desailly. The
Frenchman has not played since the injury-time
victory against Aston Villa on December 9, missing
four games in the meantime with a knee injury
including the 1-1 draw at Old Trafford. But with
captain Dennis Wise suspended and Gustavo Poyet
out injured for at least a couple of weeks, the
timing of Desailly's expected return could hardly
have been better.
A colossus at the back alongside compatriot Frank
Leboeuf, the French international signed from AC
Milan over the summer has also played several
times this season in a holding role in midfield. While
Jody Morris has performed superbly over recent
weeks when finally given his chance in the side,
boss Gianluca Vialli may prefer Desailly's experience
and stature against United, especially given the
form of Michael Duberry in defence.
Indeed, it is a measure of the strength of Chelsea's
squad that just when they look to have a crisis in
central midfield, they can call upon the services of a
World Cup winner to step in. Desailly has been close
to starting Chelsea's last two games before pulling
out late on, so his involvement is not guaranteed.
But the feeling persists that Vialli may have been
saving him for United when he named his side to
face Southampton on Boxing Day.
Italian Roberto Di Matteo may also be back to
partner Desailly in central midfield after missing the
trip to The Dell through suspension, while the hand
injury which required a minor operation should
have cleared up sufficiently. But the performances
of supposedly fringe squad players like Duberry and
Morris have nevertheless impressed the
management team of Vialli and assistant Graham
Rix.
Rix told ClubCall: ''Duberry has been outstanding
over the last four or five games, while Jody has also
shown just what he can do. He's realised that he
has a chance to make a name for himself and is
working hard on and off the pitch. He's got to keep
it up, keep his feet on the ground and he's got a
great chance.''
Chelsea will wait until later this week for further
tests on the knee injury which Poyet suffered at
Southampton before giving an update on his
condition, despite reports already ruling him out for
six weeks, but Graeme Le Saux is back in
contention after missing the 2-0 Boxing Day victory
as his wife was giving birth.

Subject: The stage is set for brooding Beckham to smile again
Tuesday, December 29, 1998
The swagger has been missing lately, but the stage seems set for David
Beckham to demonstrate he has come to terms with that infamous moment of
World Cup recklessness.
If ever there was a match ready-made for Beckham's style and inspiration, it's
Manchester United's visit to fashionable Chelsea tonight, when top Premiership
places will be at stake.
For, while Beckham insists that the red card he received for lashing out at
Diego Simeone in France has not given him a guilt complex, the old smile that
accompanied his play before the World Cup Finals has only rarely been
witnessed.
Beckham always had that certain style. Even during the formative months of the
relationship with Posh Spice Victoria Adams, when opposition fans hurled
waves of disgusting abuse at him, the United star never batted an eyelid.
That cocking of his ear in mock response to the pornographic jeers of his
jealous tormentors said everything.
Here was someone who knew he had it made. He had the skill and the girl -
and to hell with morons who tried to undermine him.
Beckham, ironically, most graphically displayed his nonchalance at Stamford
Bridge, when he trotted over to take a corner and was met by a gale of derisive
abuse. The smile, that cheeky gesture with his hand behind his ear, was one of
the sporting pictures of last season, a portrait of a player on top of the world
and enjoying every moment.
But since his return from France, where he was cruelly portrayed as the man
who lost England their chance of winning the World Cup and later had to shrug
off an effigy of himself being burned outside a public house, something has
been missing.
It is almost as if, at 23, he suddenly lost the innocence of youth on that fateful
evening in France. He appears to have lost a little of that sense of fun that made
him so exhilarating to watch. He has still managed the odd wonder free-kick
that helped make him a household name and has given him an income
estimated at over £8million a year.
There was one against Leicester in United's first Premiership game of the
season, a 2-2 draw, and another against Barcelona in that unforgettable 3-3
Champions League epic at Old Trafford last September. He has scored twice
since, though not in the last 13 games.
But it is not his goal ratio that is in question. His strike rate stands up to last
season's, when he finished third top scorer for United with 11.
Nor is it his work rate. Indeed, as he tried to silence the World Cup jibes this
season, at times he seemed to be trying too hard.
But, instead of Beckham starring in a labour of love, he has too often simply
laboured. There is a different edge to the lad from Leyton-stone who realised his
boyhood dream and loved every minute of realising it.
The eyes are a little harder, his attitude a touch more defensive. He says he is
psychologically strong, despite the battering he has taken from the fans who
will always glory in the misfortune of one of the opposition's most high-profile
players, especially one who is at least as well-known as his pregnant, pop-star
girlfriend.
Perhaps Beckham is concerned about Posh's pregnancy - she is due to give
birth in February. After all, the cares of fatherhood often alter a man's outlook on
life.
Or perhaps the events of last summer, and the subsequent malicious response
from his detractors, have taken a greater toll on the young man than he either
believes or is prepared to admit to himself.
Either way, United need to see that big, cheeky grin back on his face tonight
against Chelsea.
Right now, it is Gianluca Vialli's West End Boys who have a smile on their
faces. That will spread to a massive grin if they can put even more daylight
between themselves and the team that must still be considered the best in
England.
United made themselves so with the help of Beckham at his exuberant, boyish
best and they need that certain style of his more than ever now, not only in their
quest to add a fifth Premiership success in the Nineties, but also in their
attempt to win the Champions League at last.
In the final appearance of what has been a difficult year for one of
England's most gifted entertainers, United fans want to see him strutting his
stuff again. With the smile on his face.
United manager Ferguson is hoping, following his side's easy victory over
Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day, to bring back Andy Cole, who suffered a
groin injury training on Christmas Day.
But Cole's strike partner Dwight Yorke is very doubtful with a groin injury, as is
Jaap Stam, who has already missed two games with an ankle injury.

Subject: Schmeichel remains Ferguson's number one
Monday December 28, 1998
Alex Ferguson has scotched rumours that
his goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel is about
to be replaced in the Manchester United
team.
The Dane, who will leave English football
at the end of the season, retains his place
in tonight's vital Premiership encounter at
Chelsea despite his uncharacteristically
frail form.
Speculation has been rife that United are
in the market for a top-class goalkeeper to
maintain their search for honours on
domestic and European fronts in 1999.
But an angry United manager said: "It is
nonsense to suggest that I'm looking to
replace Peter now. Have I signed anyone?
There is your answer."
Meanwhile the Dutch defender Jaap Stam,
who is ruled out of the Stamford Bridge
game with an ankle injury, is not about to
be rushed back.
"Jaap had been playing on his bad ankle
all the time in big games like Barcelona
and Tottenham," said Ferguson, "and now
it is important to get him sorted out and
give him a break. With his World Cup
efforts this could be the right moment.
"David Beckham is suspended for our Cup
game against Middlesbrough on Saturday
so after Chelsea there is the chance to tell
him to rest for a few days. We have also
rested Paul Scholes intermittently and we
gave Gary Neville a holiday when he
needed it."
The United manager's preoccupation with
his players' welfare has extended to him
calling for a January break.
He said: "Next season you could play 17
games in the European Cup if you get to
the final, plus internationals. You don't
realise what we're asking players.
"We expect the British qualities like
doggedness, endurance and grit to come
to the fore and we're trying to develop
skilful European players too. Now as
football managers all we can focus on is
preparation and recovery."

Subject: United 'bid £3m for 17-year-old'
By Vivek Chaudhary
Fears that English football is in an inflationary spiral were heightened
yesterday after reports that Manchester United had bid £3 million for a 17-year-old
who has still to play a first-team game.
According to reports, Manchester United are trying to buy Joe Cole, still in the
youth team at West Ham United but considered to be one of the brightest
prospects in football.
If the deal is successful, Cole will become the most expensive teenager in the history
of British football. But West Ham are unlikely to part with their young star, who
already has one of the most lucrative contracts for a footballer of his age.
Cole, of Camden, north London, has been courted by all the Premiership's leading
clubs, and Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has taken a keen interest
in his career. United originally offered him a contract, but Cole opted for West Ham.
"Rumours about him being sold are just pure speculation," said a source close to
West Ham.
In his recent autobiography, West Ham's manager, Harry Redknapp, described Cole
as one of the most talented players he had seen. He is tipped for full England honours
and could have broken into West Ham's first team this season but for an injury.
Cole was paid £5,000 a week by West Ham while still at school. According to
reports, the five-year contract he signed with the east London club at the start of
the season is worth around £1.5 million. He is reportedly guaranteed £370,000 in
the final year.
But many fear that prices are running out of control.
The Premier League's contract for the televising of games runs out in two years.
Speculation has it that the next deal could be worth around £1 billion, giving more
money to clubs.
John Barnwell of the League Managers Association said: "The English game is
already caught in an inflationary spiral: domestic players are hugely overpriced,
more money is going to come into the game, and what is happening with Cole is
the shape of things to come.
"But I don't think things can continue like this, and like any inflationary situation you
have to address it."

BREAKING NEWS - Tuesday 29 December 1998
Subject: UNITED SEEK EDGE OVER TITLE RIVALS
Alex Ferguson believes the Premiership title race has come down
to five teams.
The Manchester United manager saw his side end their run of six games
without a win with a 3-0 Boxing Day defeat of Nottingham Forest to get
their championship challenge back on track. And Ferguson, whose side
tackle Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, feels certain the only clubs in
contention for English football's greatest prize are Chelsea, Aston
Villa, Arsenal, Leeds - and, of course, United.
"It's looking very tight at the top. Leeds United had a resounding victory
at Newcastle - that was a heck of a result for them," he said. "Of course
we still have Chelsea, Aston Villa and Arsenal. I think consistency is
the key factor now, albeit with half the season still to go."
United's title credentials will be tested to the limit at Chelsea, the
sides' second meeting in a fortnight following their 1-1 draw at Old
Trafford on December 16.
Ferguson's team are unbeaten in their last five games at Stamford Bridge,
scoring 14 goals in the process - including a 5-3 FA Cup win at the
start of the year.
And Ferguson intends to go on the offensive again in a bid to win one
of the first genuine six-pointers of the season.
"We've been excellent at Chelsea - just like they have been up here at
Old Trafford," he said. "We've always threatened to score goals down there
and I hope that continues.
Ferguson admits he is reasonably satisfied with his side's
achievements in the first half of the season.
"We set off the season hoping we could qualify for the quarter-finals
of the European Cup and we've done that. We wanted to be in touching
distance of the leaders in the Premiership and we have done that
too.
"While you can point to some indifferent form at stages, you're
bound to have that when you go for a title. It's not always plain sailing.
I think we have done the hard part quite well and we've given ourselves
a great chance for the second half of the season."

Subject: United run into Ronaldo trouble
By David Lacey
Manchester United's chances of making progress in the Champions League could
depend on what side of bed Ronaldo gets out of in March. United have been drawn
against Internazionale in the quarter-finals; much will depend on the Brazilian's mood
and form.
If Inter are still as inconsistent in three months as they have been for much of the
season this will be a winnable tie for United. Sooner or later most teams have
to eliminate one of the big Italian sides to win the Champions League.
Usually it is later: in the past 10 years only one final has not featured an Italian
club. United will see this quarter-final as an opportunity to remove important rivals
at a relatively early stage.
With Real Madrid, the holders, playing Dynamo Kiev, the dark horses, and the
two German teams, Bayern Munich and Kaiserslautern, drawn together the way
ahead for United could be relatively clear if they can overcome Inter. Juventus,
however, will surely remain after meeting Olympiakos.
Old Trafford is under no illusions about the the task facing Alex Ferguson's team. "It's
a tough draw," said United's chairman Martin Edwards, "but it's also a great draw
because of Inter's reputation. They are a really good side who have arguably the
world's best player in the shape of Ronaldo." His precise shape has mystified
observers ever since he flopped in the World Cup final in July. Reports of a knee
injury have persisted and Ronaldo continues to show his true qualities only in
spasms.
But even if Ronaldo is again off form Inter will be able to call on one or two
alternatives to concentrate United's minds at the back. There is, for example, Diego
Simeone, whose push in the back sent David Beckham sprawling when England
met Argentina in the World Cup. Beckham's dismissal followed his flicking
a retaliatory foot at Simeone and so, after a penalty shoot-out, did England's.
Simeone can expect a rough reception at Old Trafford on March 3 when the United
crowd will no doubt subject him to the sort of abuse Beckham has been receiving on
other English grounds since the World Cup. Ferguson will be more concerned
about Simeone's skills, along with those of Roberto Baggio and Youri Djorkaeff.
Playing their home leg first need not be a disadvantage for United. Monaco knocked
United out of last season's quarter-finals when they drew 1-1 at Old Trafford to go
through on the away goal, having earlier shared a 0-0 draw. For United it will be
almost as important to prevent Inter scoring in the first leg as beating them on
the night.
