From: J Callaghan Subject: Teamtalk Pallister's £1 million gamble + Latest transfer speculation «« Also Ben Thornley looks like he is joining Huddersfield WEDNESDAY, MAY 27, 1998 Pallister: £1 million gamble Gary Pallister could be faced with a £1 million gamble after the World Cup on whether to quit Old Trafford in search of regular Premiership football. United chairman Martin Edwards confirmed the club had received an official bid for the 33-year-old star, via the proper channels, reportedly worth £2 million. He said: "We won't stand in Gary's way if he wants to leave, although we don't want to do anything until after the World Cup." United will remain cautious until all four of their World Cup defenders - Gary Neville, Jaap Stam, Henning Berg and Ronny Johnsen - have reported back in July, injury free and raring to go. Pallister, who left Boro for Manchester United for a then British transfer record of £2.3m in September 1989, is now due a big-money testimonial at Old Trafford next season. The game would net him over £500,000 tax-free but a whole season of related events at Old Trafford could see him double that figure. However, with the recent arrival of Jaap Stam, Pallister could feel his place is under threat and want a move to prolong his Premiership future - representing a £1 million gamble. Despite reports claiming United boss Alex Ferguson is not wanting to offload any of his stars, Bryan Robson is still very hopeful of signing his former teammate. Latest transfer speculation «« Stars from three different continents have been linked to Old Trafford on Wednesday thanks to our old friend the football grapevine. Benedict McCarthy of Ajax is the newest addition to the growing list of reported targets this summer, according to sources in Holland. The Amsterdam club have issued a 'hands off' warning since major interest was stirred in the 20-year-old South African star. Meanwhile, United are still in the hunt for Juan Riquelme who might not now make it into Argentina's final squad for the World Cup finals. The attacking midfielder will stay with Boca Juniors throughout the summer who are hopeful of fending off Europe's top clubs for another year at least. Patrick Kluivert and AC Milan could have priced themselves out of doing any deal with United for the 21-year-old Dutchman. Milan are said to be asking £8-9 million for the player who cost the nothing while Kluivert is reluctant to take a cut in wages from his reported massive earnings. Sheri under pressure «« Teddy Sheringham has admitted he feels under more pressure than ever before after his first season at Old Trafford. He said: "Just playing for United is something that's totally different from playing for anybody else. "Until you've been there and been involved you don't really realise just what it's like. "But you do when you go to Bolton; there's 10 minutes left, it's 0-0 and all they're doing is defending but their crowd's going mad about them getting that result, they're ecstatic. "That's a real eye-opener, something I've never encountered before, and when you're expected to win every game it takes a lot out of you."

Thornley, 23, who spent 12 matches on loan at the McAlpine Stadium during the 1995-96 season, has agreed a three-year deal with the First Division outfit. United boss Alex Ferguson wants £500,000 for Thornley, who will be out-of-contract and a free agent in a year. If the clubs fail to agree a fee the matter will be decided by a tribunal. Town boss Peter Jackson said: "Ben is someone who will excite the fans, create chances and score goals. He is just the type of quality player we need." Thornley broke into the United first team midway through last season when the club were suffering from a spate of injuries, standing in for Ryan Giggs on the left wing while the Welshman was sidelined. © PA Sporting Life
