United hope to complete Blomqvist's transfer to Old Trafford next week after holding talks with the player on Thursday. And Ferguson has not finished spending and has confirmed his interest in Aston Villa striker Yorke after weeks of speculation. The Old Trafford boss has not made an offer for the Trinidad and Tobago international but he is not prepared to match Villa's asking price of £16million, which would be a British transfer record. Ferguson is optimistic that the Midlands club can be persuaded to accept less for Yorke, who has two years left on his Villa contract. "We are interested in the player, but if they are talking £16million then it is out of the question," he told the Manchester Evening News. "We are hoping to work away on that." Villa are desperate to hang on to the 26-year-old, who has been at the club for nine years, and have offered him a new five-year contract, which would make him their best paid player ever. Ferguson made his second signing of the summer, following the £10.75million capture of Jaap Stam, when he agreed terms with Serie A side Parma for Blomqvist. United clinched the deal after Blomqvist met Ferguson and chairman Martin Edwards at Old Trafford on Thursday. United have refused to reveal the fee, but the player has been valued at £5million. Ferguson has long been an admirer of the former IFK Gothenburg winger, who can play on either flank, and he was pleased to get his man after he had tried unsuccessfully to sign him before. "The boy has gone back to Parma for talks with his club," he said. "I expect him to be back next week when we expect to conclude the deal." Blomqvist will give United another option out wide and he will provide vital cover for winger Ryan Giggs following Ben Thornley's departure to Huddersfield. United sorely missed genuine width last season when Giggs was injured and Blomqvist will add another dimension to Ferguson's squad. Blomqvist first caught Ferguson's eye when he scored the first goal in Gothenburg's 3-1 victory over United in the Champions' League back in November 1994. © PA Sporting Life

And the Manchester United boss won't stop there in his quest to bring back the title and European Cup to Old Trafford. Ferguson will swoop for Aston Villa striker Dwight Yorke after officially confirming his interest for the first time yesterday. First, though, comes the signing of Blomqvist from Parma in a £5m deal to be completed next week. He has been tracked by Fergie for four years since scoring for IFK Gothenberg against United in the Champions' League. Blomqvist virtually destroyed United on his own in an all-conquering performance. Delighted Ferguson said: "The boy has gone back to Parma for talks with his club. I expect him to be back next week when we expect to conclude the deal." United, who have already signed Dutch defender Jaap Stam for £10.75m, will now turn their attention to Yorke. But the striker will not arrive without a fight from Villa, whose boss John Gregory has priced Yorke at £16m. Ferguson will be prepared to splash up to £10m and not a penny more. To push the deal through he will offer Andy Cole, Teddy Sheringham or Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in part-exchange. But Gregory launched a stinging attack on United's entire strike force last night. He told Ferguson: "I do not want any cast-offs at this club. If players are not good enough for Manchester United, then they are not good enough for Aston Villa." And the Villa boss added: "I have still received no official contact from United. If they think they can do business through a third party, then the people at Old Trafford are making a big mistake. Dwight Yorke is a Villa player today, and as far as I am concerned, he will be a Villa player tomorrow, next week and when the Premiership season begins on August 15." Earlier, Ferguson had finally confirmed: "Yes, we are interested in Yorke. If Villa intend sticking to their £16m fee for Dwight, it will be out of the question. We are hoping to work away on that part of it." He has turned to Yorke as his number one target after failing to land either Gabriel Batistuta or Ariel Ortega. Ferguson's has failed to land Fiorentina's £10m Argentina star Batistuta because of his £30,000-a-week wage demands. Ortega would settle for less in his pocket and has hinted that he would love a move to Old Trafford. But once again the £10m-rated Argentine superstar would want more than United are prepared to pay - around £20,000-a-week. SHEARER'S ON THE MOVE ENGLAND skipper Alan Shearer has put his house on the market, fuelling rumours that he is ready to quit Newcastle in a £20million-plus deal. Shearer is looking to sell his newly-built detached home on the exclusive Wynyard Estate owned by former Newcastle supremo Sir John Hall. There has been widespread speculation that the striker is seeking a new challenge and internet rumours have linked him with Manchester United. Barcelona are also reportedly monitoring his situation, but sources close to the player tried to defuse rumours that he is planning a move. Shearer, 27, selected his house shortly after making a then world record £15m move from Blackburn to Newcastle. The property is part of an ever-expanding development at Wynyard - a sprawling country estate on the outskirts of Teesside. Ex-Newcastle boss Kevin Keegan still owns the mansion he had built there two years ago, but Shearer and his wife Lainya have decided that the time has come to seek more privacy for themselves and daughters Chloe and Hollie. "It is true that Alan's house is on the market," said a Newcastle spokesman, "but his move has nothing to do with the football side of things. "It's just natural that the Shearers should want somewhere with a little more privacy." Newcastle last night snapped up their third Frenchman of the summer when they agreed to pay Cannes £520,000 for midfielder Laurent Charvet. Charvet, 25, who played seven games on loan at Chelsea last season, joins keeper Lionel Perez from Sunderland and World Cup striker Stephane Guivarc'h from Auxerre.
