TEDDY IN ENGLAND EXILE
Teddy Sheringham's hopes of making England's starting line-up against
Tunisia took another battering last night, writes Harry Harris.
On the first day's training at their France base camp in La Baule, Michael
Owen and Alan Shearer worked together in front of goal while Sheringham was
left to train with the rest of the England squad.
It is further evidence of Sheringham's disenchantment ever since he returned
to England duty from his night on the tiles at the Babylon Club in Portugal.
Yesterday, the signs were that Hoddle will go for the Shearer-Owen strike
partnership in Marseille on Monday.
However, if Sheringham can prove to the England coach that he is in the
right frame of mind and in peak physical condition, then he still has a
chance of opening the World Cup.
Sheringham's apology for his 6.45am frolics in the karaoke club on the
Algarve appeared less than lukewarm.
Then, when Hoddle took his charges to a West End night out to watch the
musical Chicago with their wives and girlfriends, Sheringham was one of the
six who had neither.
He seemed reluctant to go on a night out after being criticised so heavily
for his nocturnal habits. Then yesterday, in front of 200 locals, mainly
schoolchildren, the England party trained with the "team" that played behind
closed doors against Caen.
That meant Shearer and Owen trained in unison, while Sheringham joined those
left out in Caen in a more strenuous workout under coach Peter Taylor.
Hoddle has known his first-choice selection for some time and will not be
deflected by other people's opinions.
Hoddle said: "I don't intend to name my team until one-and-a-half hours
before the kick-off, the same as everybody else.
"But I work on my teams and everyone inside the camp knows them two or three
days before. I'm no different from anyone else.
"I have to keep something up my sleeve and that's why I don't name my team
until just before the kick-off.
"It would be silly to lay my plans out and give the opposition any
advantage.
"Yet I already know the team and I have already been working on situations.
"What your cameras might see is sometimes nowhere near what is going on."
That is a direct challenge to the media who tried to infiltrate the private
practice match at Caen, when it was uncovered that Owen played alongside
Shearer.But Hoddle played a few tricks before to the vital qualifying tie in
Rome against Italy.
Then it was believed that David Beckham had flu and would not make it. But
he did.
Gareth Southgate recalls: "I was involved in one red herring in Rome!"
First it was inferred from Hoddle's comments this week that Sheringham had
been forgiven for his transgressions and would start.
Then that was turned completely on its head when Owen was tried out from the
start alongside Shearer after England landed in France.
Hoddle might know what's going on and so far no one can get it wrong, having
simultaneously plumped for both Sheringham and Owen.
I believe Hoddle will unleash Owen on the World Cup when he is ready and
that both strikers will play some part in the opening game against Tunisia -
with Sheringham more likely to start.

IT'S NOT DWIGHT, FERGUSON
Aston Villa manager John Gregory last night launched an amazing attack on
Alex Ferguson, accusing the Manchester United boss of trying to nick Dwight
Yorke on the cheap.
Gregory is annoyed at speculation that United are chasing hot-shot Yorke,
amid suggestions that the Old Trafford club are prepared to pay only around
£6million.
He said: "I think it is very unfair that they are trying to unsettle Dwight
in this way.
"I have had no official contact from United, but I believe they are trying
to cast doubts in the player's mind with all the conjecture which is being
drummed up.
"It is ridiculous even to suggest that Dwight is worth only £6 million.
"Kevin Davies recently moved from Southampton to Blackburn for £7.5million.
Well, as far as I'm concerned Dwight is twice the player, so let's talk
£15million as the starting price.
"Not that I have any intention of selling him to United, or any other club
for that matter."
Yorke, 26, has been with Villa for nine years after travelling over from his
native Caribbean island of Tobago to sign for former boss Graham Taylor.
He made his debut in the 1989-90 season, has been Villa's leading scorer for
the past three campaigns, and still has two years left on his contract.
Now Gregory is ready to offer him an extended deal, likely to be close to
£25,000 a week, and ultimately wants him to pledge his future to the club
for the rest of his career.
"Initially, I am ready to extend Dwight's contract by a further three years.
"Then in the future perhaps we can talk again to ensure he stays with us for
the rest of his playing days.
"Hopefully this will put to an end all the speculation about a possible move
to United."
Gregory is anxious to talk to Yorke about his future as soon as he returns
from a summer holiday in the West Indies.
Even though Villa splashed out a club-record £7.5million on disgraced Stan
Collymore a year ago, Yorke has maintained his position as the No.1
favourite among Villa fans with his goal touch.
