From: Dave Menashe Subject: Everton United TV Report in California I suppose eventually we'll get an eye witness report to follow Terry's Radio report and this TV report. I was one of the lucky ones. At 7am, as I was getting ready to "watch" the game on Real Audio or IRC, my local bar owner called me to let me know that we were on as Chelsea/Villa was off. Arrived at 7:18 to find that we had taken the lead a few minutes earlier. I was surrounded by angry Cockneys and two Villa fans who had risen as early as 5:30am to watch this and were about to see another victory for the team they despise. I felt great, I wasn't going to gloat but I was going to "celebrate" every goal with my normal loud "Yes," and my Denis Law salute. The second goal was a joke. When it went in, everyone just sat there - me, one other Red, twenty-odd smelly men of southern persuasions and a couple of American Chelsea gloryhunters. It also seemed that way at the ground. The commentator seemed confused and so were we. But we were 2-0 up and looking in control. I knew we'd win by 3 or 4 as Everton would tire. All the reds, barring Scholsie, Phizza, and Wessa had rested all week. Everton played 120 minutes in the North East just three days ago. Those who criticize Alex for resting everyone were "shut up" by the great man's squad system today. Everyone looked fresh and sharp and most players performed well in the first half. The Everton goal was so they could go home happy. In fairness, it's very tough to defend against Ferguson in the air but why was Keano marking him? Surely Stam should have been covering him. The second half started badly for us. Everton piled on a few minutes of pressure and hit the post twice. But I knew we'd win because we were faster in most areas and were winning most of the 50/50 balls. The third was well taken by Andy. This was the 4th game out of the last five that they have started together that he and Yorkie have BOTH scored. Nine goals between them in 5 games. Most teams would like to score 1.8 goals a game. Jesper headed well after the keeper had saved his initial shot to round of an excellent match. Not just for his first goal for us but for his overall attitude and performance today he was my Man of the Match. We know Alex was after him for a while - I can see why. In one beautiful move he had two men around him on the touchline on the left. He beat both men before sending in a cross. He has fitted in well and supplies great balls into the box. And with Giggsy out for a month he is perfect cover. Scholesie was at his best and Roy was ... well, I wouldn't say that he can't get better but he was superb. If he stays fit, he could carry us all the way this season. And if he keeps improving at this rate, he will win player of the year. And I mean PFA and Sportswriter's player of the year. On the downside, we were weak on the right. Becks had a below par game. It wasn't up to his usual standards - who knows why. Wes was solid in defence but his passes going forward seemed to go astray a lot. He suffered from Becks having a poor game. After the third goal, all you could hear were United fans - we had the volume too low to catch most of them but for Halloween we were treated to 12 days of Christmas. There were also a couple of other Eric songs. Heard nothing about Murdoch - maybe someone who was there can tell us if there were any anti Sky chants. All in all, a good performance and I hope Brondy had a spy there,. If so, he'll go home even more worried that we will hit six against them again to win 3 sets to love. 21 goals in the last 5 Premier League games and Newcastle next week at OT. We haven't beaten them in the last 4 league meetings and we could go top next weekend. ;-) Oh, life is so good being a Red, even though your local bar landlord is a Blackburn fan he is a decent chap ;-))) Manchester United - The Legend - http://manunited.net

Subject: PLAYER PROFILE (ANDY COLE) Birthplace: Nottingham, 15/10/1971 Full International: England (2 caps, 0 goals) Position: Forward Squad Number: 9 Debut: 22.01.1995 Appearances (1995-1998): 144 - 22 as sub Goals: 67 Andy Cole was born in Nottingham on 15th October 1971. He began his footballing career with Arsenal, joining them on schoolboy forms after playing at the National School of Excellence at Lilleshall. However, things did not go according to plan and his first team outings with Arsenal were limited. After Cole was loaned to Fulham and Bristol City, he was transferred to Bristol City in July 1992, for a fee of £500,000. He spent just a little under a year with Bristol City before Newcastle paid £1,750,000 - a record transfer fee received by Bristol City - in March 1993. He was an instant success with Newcastle, helping them to secure promotion into the Premier League in his first season. The following year, his 34 league goals won him the European 'Golden Boot' award and 1994 PFA Young Player of the Year. In January 1995, in an attempt to strengthen his squad, Alex Ferguson paid a then British record transfer fee of £6,250,000 for Andy Cole's services. In his first season with United he scored 12 goals in 17 games - a decent return for any forward - five of them coming in Manchester United's 9-0 defeat of Ipswich Town. His goals, however, were not enough to clinch the championship in the 1994-5 season and United finished the season without any silverware for the first time in five years. The following season Cole picked up a Premier League Championship medal, scoring one of United's goals in their 3-0 victory at Middlesbrough in the last game of the season, to wipe out the memory of West Ham twelve months earlier. The following season all did not go according to plan for United's record signing. Cole started the season with pneumonia, then broke both legs in a reserve team game in September. On top of this, Alex Ferguson's summer signing Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer, had got off to a flying start scoring five goals in his first 10 games. Fortunately for Cole, the season finished on a much happier note, with United picking up their fourth League Championship in five years, a second for Cole. He has recently been recalled to the England team after an absence of two years. Did You Know? Andy Cole played for England schoolboys, scoring on his debut in a 2-0 victory over West Germany. He scored the equalising goal for Manchester United, in their 2-1 victory against Southampton, in April 1995, the same day his son Devante was born. He is the only player in United’s current team to score a first team hat trick.

Subject: Free-scoring Man United can take hold of group MANCHESTER, England Nov 3 - Free-scoring Manchester United look for a repeat thrashing of Brondby on Wednesday that will enable them to take a firm grip of Champions' League group D. United thumped the Danes 6-2 in Denmark, just one of some great October performances that saw them score 21 goals in six games. And while another six goals might be too much to ask at Old Trafford, three points certainly is not. Victory would take United to eight points and pile the pressure on Barcelona and Bayern Munich, who meet in Spain on Wednesday. United travel to Barcelona next, before hosting Munich in their final game and they will want to approach those fixtures from a position of strength. They should do so after running into a rich vein of form after a sluggish start to the season. Manager Alex Fersuson said there were areas of his side's game in Brondy that were below-par, although he could not fault the finishing. The striker partnership of Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke has turned into a deadly one and both men were on target again in Saturday's 4-1 victory at Everton. Also finding the net was Swedish winger Jesper Blomqvist, who scored his first goal since his move from Parma. His wide play makes him the ideal replacement for Ryan Giggs, who could be out for a month with a broken bone in his foot. "Losing Giggs is a big blow but luckily Blomqvist has been exceptional," said Ferguson, who has few other fitness worries. He looks set to name the same side that beat Everton as Phil Neville and youngster Wes Brown continue to impress in the full-back positions. That means Denis Irwin will start on the bench. United's Danish goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel said United had learned their lesson from previous slips at home, although he predicted Brondby would be tougher opposition this time. "At home in Parken Brondby played to win. Now they will come to Old Trafford to fight for their pride," he said. The Danes are without attacking midfielder Thomas Lindrup, who is suspensded, and defender Brian Jensen, who was injured against United two weeks ago. The good news is the return of captain John Jensen from suspension. He and midfield partner Allan Ravn will be charged with shutting down the influence of Roy Keane. "Nobody expects anything of us. That could be our chance and perhaps we can spring a surprise like we did against Liverpool," said Jensen, referring to Brondby's shock UEFA Cup win at Anfield in 1995. Probable teams: Manchester United: Peter Schmeichel; Wes Brown, Gary Neville, Jaap Stam, Phil Neville, David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Roy Keane, Jesper Blomqvist, Dwight Yorke, Andy Cole. Brondby: Mogens Krogh; Soeren Colding, Per Nielsen, Kenneth Rasmussen, Aurelius Skarbalius (or Vragel Da Silva); Ole Bjur, Mikkel Jensen, Allan Ravn, John Jensen, Kim Daugaard; Ebbe Sand (or Bo Hansen).

Subject: Jensen's Euro dream John Jensen scored only once for Arsenal and made himself a comical cult hero in the process. Tomorrow, he would love to give Highbury fans another laugh by scoring again. The 33-year-old Dane is long gone from north London, but as he leads Brondby into Champions League action against Manchester United, he nurses dreams of a strike that could stop Alex Ferguson's players in their tracks and enhance his romantic vision of an Arsenal triumph in the European Cup. Should the Brondby captain's unikely wish of scoring the winner at Old Trafford come true, the Arsenal support who once had T-shirts at the ready, proclaiming: 'I was there when Jensen scored', may feel it necessary to bring out a second edition. Jensen's lone goal on English soil came on New Year's Eve 1994 in a 3-1 defeat by Queens Park Rangers at Highbury. Ironically, the effort was similar to the blockbuster he scored in the 1992 European Championship Final to help Denmark beat Germany 2-0. That strike built for Jensen a reputation he could never live up to on arrival shortly afterwards at Highbury. At first, Arsenal fans criticised the midfielder for his failure to score. Then they grew frustrated. But eventually even they could see only the funny side of Jensen's predicament and, perversely, the longer he fired blanks, the greater the bond developed between player and supporters. Jensen, who has not played competitively in England since leaving Arsenal, now hopes that the laugh may be on United. He said: 'I still have many friends within Arsenal. In fact, I came over for a week last November and went for a few drinks with the boys. I would love it if they could win the European Cup. 'But while my heart tells me that Arsenal can win it, my head tells me it will be Manchester United. So I will be trying even harder to try to even things up, and if I could score * well! ''I would be sure to dedicate my goal to Arsenal and all those fans who, in the end, made me feel so wanted and made my time, in a strange sort of way, so enjoyable. 'I think people realise now that I was never a goalscorer. That was not my game, so I got a shock when I realised what the fans were expecting when I joined Arsenal. 'The harder I tried to score, the worse it got. Every time I gathered the ball the cry would go up 'Shoot, shoot, shoot'. It was crazy. 'But I will never forget the noise when I finally did score. We had been one down, then I got the equaliser. The cheering just went on and on. 'QPR went on to beat us, but it didn't seem to matter to the Arsenal fans. They were coming up to me later, mobbing me, showing me their T-shirts, telling me how pleased they were just to have been there. 'Even after I left to return to Brondby, I kept getting messages of support telling me they would never forget me. There were dozens of cards and letters. It felt strange to be such a phenomenon when, really, I had failed them in their expectations of me. Now, maybe, I can make those fans smile again.' But a joke's a joke. Tomorrow Jensen, who missed the first Group D meeting with United in Copenhagen when Brondby were crushed 6-2, somehow has to reverse a trend which began in pre-season when United beat the Danish side 6-0 in a friendly. Jensen said: 'United are a tremendous side. We all know how difficult it will be to take anything from the game at Old Trafford. 'In the first game, I do not think there are many teams who could have lived with them. But our pride was hurt at the Parken Stadion. As professionals you do not like to lose like that. So while the chances of us winning - and me scoring only my second-ever goal in England may look rather slim - we will go there to play bravely. 'I also believe that we at Brondby have one more surprise up our sleeves. We beat Bayern Munich in the first game of the section and I still think there is something in our team which could create another shock. 'I don't know whether it will be against United, against Bayern again, or maybe even at home to Barcelona. But I am convinced that whoever beats Brondby twice will be the team that wins the section. Barcelona have done it, so have United. But whatever happens, we will not be lying down. And if we could come away with something from England, well, that really would be funny.'

Subject: JENSEN: ARSENAL CAN BEAT UNITED By David Anderson, PA Sport Brondby captain John Jensen believes just one team can stop Manchester United in Europe - his old club Arsenal. Group D leaders United can take a big step towards qualifying for the Champions' League quarter-finals by beating Brondby at Old Trafford tomorrow night. Arsenal are also handily positioned in their group and former Gunner Jensen says they could be United's biggest threat in the knock-out stages. Arsene Wenger's side have won their last four encounters with United and Jensen feels they know how to beat the Manchester giants. "Manchester United are one of the best teams in Europe and I think there is only one team that can beat them, and that is my old club Arsenal," said Jensen. "If Arsenal and Manchester United were to meet in Europe then I think the result would be the same as it has been in the Premier League. "Arsenal have already proved how good they are in games like that and they are a team that excels in cup competition football. "Manchester United are a very strong team but Arsenal have beaten them four times running and if they meet in the semi-finals, final or wherever, then I feel Arsenal will have the edge." United have certainly had the edge in the last two meetings with Brondby, scoring 12 goals against the Danish champions. Many United fans will turn up at Old Trafford expecting to see another convincing victory, but manager Alex Ferguson sounded a note of caution. "We have had plenty of European games to know that it will be a hard game," he said. "You only have to look at Brondby's record in Europe to see they beat Karlsruhe 5-0 in Germany and that is a warning to us. "We know that if we make a mistake now it could cost us dearly and I don't think the players will be complacent." United have been red hot in recent weeks and Ferguson claims much of that is down to captain Roy Keane's return to top form following his cruciate ligament injury. Keane holds the centre of the park while United's other stars attack and Ferguson feels he is almost back to his best. "Keane does make a difference in terms of the security he gives us in the midfield," he said. "He does not give the ball away and he's a great tackler. He can defend when we attack and counter-attacks are not such a threat to us when Keane is in the team." Some players are never the same after such a serious injury, but Ferguson always felt Keane would return as strong as before. "We were positive because of Roy's attitude," he said. "Some players let it affect them but Roy has been very patient. He worked hard and so there was always that hope that he would come back. "As he's got older some of his fire has evaporated just a little bit - just enough to give me some more proper nights' sleep. But you don't want to take away what makes him." Phil Neville and Nicky Butt have shrugged off knocks but the only change from the side which beat Everton 4-1 on Saturday is likely to be Denis Irwin for Wes Brown. Goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel will make his 50th European appearance against his former club. Team (probable): Schmeichel, Irwin, P Neville, Stam, G Neville, Keane, Scholes, Blomqvist, Beckham, Yorke, Cole.

Subject: BRONDBY BOSS ENVIES UNITED By David Anderson, PA Sport Manchester United strikers Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole are the best in Europe, according to Brondby coach Ebbe Skovdahl. Skovdahl saw them in action again in the 4-1 victory over Everton on Saturday and for him it just confirmed his belief that no other partnership can touch them. Cole and Yorke have scored 14 goals between them this season, including one apiece against Brondby in Copenhagen two weeks ago. On the eve of the return Champions' League match at Old Trafford, Skovdahl said: "They are probably the two best strikers in Europe at the moment." I watched Saturday's game against Everton at Goodison Park and that only confirmed my views about Cole and Yorke. "It's not just what they do individually, which is such a threat, but the way they play together. "They are just two outstanding players." Cole and Yorke helped United beat Brondby 6-2 in the Parken Stadium and this was after Alex Ferguson's men had defeated them 6-0 in a pre-season friendly. A defiant Skovdahl, though, claimed he was not scared by the prospect of facing them again. "I do not fear anything in football," he said. "There's always a chance we could lose heavily again if we start badly, but we will fight more than we did in Copenhagen and we hope we don't make as many bad mistakes. "The game was disastrous, but I think that it's a good thing that we are meeting again so soon and hopefully we can do much better this time. "We still want to do well in our last three games, starting with tomorrow." Brondby beat Viborg FF 2-1 at the weekend and Skovdahl claims this has helped restore their confidence for the trip to Old Trafford. "That win on Friday was a big help in terms of improving morale," he said. "It was important to win the game, but it was also important that we played well and we did both." Thomas Lindrup is suspended for the Danish champions, although former Arsenal midfielder John Jensen returns from a one-match ban. Brondby are expected to deploy Ebbe Sand as a lone striker as Skovdahl opts for a more cautious approach 4-5-1 formation. Brondby (probable): Krogh, Skarbalius, Nielsen, Rasmussen, Colding, Ravn, John Jensen, Bjur, Daugaard, Bagger, Sand.
