The former England centre-half could coin in around £750,000 from a benefit after ten years at United, but that money can be made up out of the cash paid by Boro. Pallister knows his first team chances at Old Trafford are limited with the imminent arrival of £10.5m Japp Stam from PSV Eindhoven. Marcus Lionel van Geyzel.

Schmeichel, Denmark's imposing, blond figurehead from Manchester United, is being hailed once again here in Nantes as the world's finest goalkeeper. He is also the player with such a dominant character that he virtually leads his nation's team from the back. It is that powerful presence the Danes believe can unsettle Ronaldo and Brazil - and help them pull of the biggest shock so far in tonight's quarter-final. Chelsea's Brian Laudrup is Denmark's skipper, but he happily acknowledged the massive influence 34-year-old Schmeichel exerts in the team and over opposing strikers.Laudrup said: "Everyone knows about Peter. Everyone knows about his tremendous presence and charisma. "He is the best goalkeeper in the world - and even Ronaldo will be intimidated." Ronaldo has shaken off an ankle injury scare and will face the Danes.

Old Trafford boss Alex Ferguson is ready to spend big again after sounding out Real Madrid about their Brazilian World Cup defender. He has already parted with £10.75million to prise Holland defensive linchpin Jaap Stam away from PSV Eindhoven. Now he's ready to match that outlay to pull off one of the most spectacular transfer coups of the summer. The newly-crowned European champions were asked to name their price for a player whose explosive pace - generated by amazing 35-inch thighs - and deadly finishing has helped make Brazil favourites to retain the World Cup. Cash-conscious United didn't baulk when Real quoted them a minimum of £10million. They are prepared to loosen the purse strings and carry on spending to guard against a repeat of last season's title heartbreak at the hands of Double winners Arsenal. Ferguson has identified the left flank as an area which needs strengthening. He sees jet-heeled wingback Carlos as the perfect answer and is eager to push through a £10million-plus deal. The 25-year-old flyer became one of the talking points of Le Tournoi in France last summer after scoring with an astonishing long-range free-kick. He is widely regarded as one of the best attacking left-backs in the game and has also impressed Ferguson with his defensive qualities. The United chief used his recent excursion to the World Cup finals to keep an eye on Brazil in the group games. Carlos again emerged as a prominent figure as the defending champions cruised into the last eight. Now United are waiting to pounce once their interest in France 98 comes to an end. Real are resigned to losing one of their most high-profile names and have already made arrangements to replace him. They have agreed a fee with Spanish league rivals Valencia for World Cup defender Ivan Campo. That will clear the way for Carlos to fulfil his ambition of joining the Premiership's all-star array of foreign imports. Brazil team-mate Juninho is one of his closest pals and has given him an upbeat appraisal of the cut and thrust of English football. Juninho was a huge crowd favourite at Middlesbrough and only quit for Atletico Madrid when Boro were relegated to the First Division. Riverside manager Bryan Robson has abandoned hope of luring Juninho back to Middlesbrough. Robson will have first option on the £10million Brazilian if Atletico Madrid decide to sell him. But the Boro boss said yesterday: "It's nonsense to suggest the new manager of Atletico would not want him."
