MEN - SILVER SALVO - Bosnich Fires Trophy Blast By Tom Tyrrell THE new slim-line Mark Bosnich is still hungry - but Manchester United fans need not worry. The Reds' keeper, criticised for his fitness earlier in the season, is hoping to gorge himself on a big slice of success pretty soon. The Aussie Bosman Rule signing is desperate to join in the feast his teammates have enjoyed in recent years - and could tuck in in Italy next week. ``Most of the people here have won the Championship before, and of course the Champions' League, but the whole experience, with the exception of being here and knowing the faces and the place, is a new one for me. So it's great for me,'' he said. ``We will see come May whether I get the opportunity, but the main reason I came here was to win things and that along with the new challenge and hopefully come May I will have a slice myself.'' Bosnich declared himself ready for this afternoon's Premiership clash with Derby County after a scare last weekend when he cut short his international break Down Under because of a hamstring problem. ``I felt it was a little bit tight and had a scan in Australia following the first Brazil game. It showed there was no serious damage or anything like that, but after discussions with my Australian coach, United thought it was better that I should come home straight away,'' he says. He has worked hard to reach peak fitness following months out of action last season because of injury, and there is an obvious determination about his approach to the job. ``It was difficult leaving the side in August because of injury, but I fought my way back and I am going to hold on to that shirt with everything I've got. ``We are getting to the stage of the Champions' League where there'll be no easy games. I personally think it's a very difficult draw and we'll have to be at our best to get through.'' Tuesday's game in Florence puts him up against Fiorentina's Gabriel Batistuta whose super goal sank Arsenal at Wembley - but the United keeper relishes the challenge. ``Batistuta is a player I greatly respect. I have actually played against him before, when Australia played Argentina back in 1992. He was a very good player then and he has continued that form for the last four or five years. He is somebody, along with Rui Costa, that we will have to be very careful of.'' The Fiorentina game will be United's seventh European fixture this season, with ten more to go if they are to retain their trophy. For Bosnich it is only his fourth outing in the re-jigged competition and his chance to chalk up a third successive victory. ``There isn't really much opinion in the dressing room about the new style Champions' League other than the fact that there's far more games. It's a new thing for me anyway, so it doesn't really make much difference. I think everybody accepts what is thrown at them even though the administrators and the powers that be, could perhaps look at things a little differently in terms of the amount of games played in a short space of time.'' United and their globetrotting goalkeeper can look forward to more travelling next week. Two days after returning from Italy, they fly out to Japan for the inter-Continental Final in Tokyo where they face South American champions Palmeiras.

TRAP BACKS KEANE TO BE ITALIAN HIT Fiorentina coach Giovanni Trapattoni has tipped the soon-to-be out-of-contract Roy Keane to end up in Italy next season. The manager, famed for his psychological mind-games, said before Tuesday night's clash with Manchester United: "I don't think Keane would have a problem coming to Italy because of his characteristics and his personality. "They would enable him to play anywhere at the moment. He has something in his head which means he always knows what to do on the football pitch. He is a strong player and a great header of the ball and all in all he is an enormous presence in midfield. "I think he could possibly go to Milan, Inter or Juventus. Juventus are very much appreciated in England and I could definitely see him with Juventus. "Beckham can play anywhere and he would be an even better player in Italy than in England, as would Giggs and Keane. In Italian football for me there are no players with skills like Giggs or Beckham and I would like to have players with these characteristics in my team. "I believe in Italy at the moment players with these characteristics are missing. We have plenty of central midfield players with great ability like Del Piero and Baggio, but we do not have them out wide. I would be happy to have Giggs and Beckham playing in Italy."

Beckham squares up to Rivaldo's self-image By Keir Radnedge Two players are in the frame to succeed Zinedine Zidane as European Footballer of the Year - and both are about to lay their claims on the Champions League line. Manchester United's David Beckham, Zidane's own favourite, faces Fiorentina in Florence tomorrow. The other, a later arrival on the personal prize scene, is Rivaldo who hopes to be fit to inspire Barcelona against Hertha in Berlin. Rivaldo has a high opinion of himself, as perhaps befits the man who inspired Barcelona's league title success last term with 24 goals, and then outshone Ronaldo in leading Brazil to victory in the Copa America, the South American championship, on his summer holidays. At the start of the year, for example, Rivaldo was invited to attend the FIFA gala in Barcelona in a walk-on role to receive an award as mere Spanish league footballer of the year. He rejected the invitation saying that if the world award was not to be his, nothing else would do. Rivaldo's value to Barcelona is immense, to the reported concern of coach Louis Van Gaal who would feel happier if his entire foreign contingent were only Dutch or Dutch-educated players such as Finland's Jari Litmanen. Yet, when Rivaldo missed a rare match at the weekend through injury so Barcelona, misfiring in attack, went down 3-1 at Valencia with barely a squeak - save when stand-in striker Dani lost his temper in the final minute and was sent off for a foul on Valencia keeper Andres Palop. Rivaldo is angry that his complaints about a leg injury have fuelled speculation concerning his on-going contract dispute. He said: 'It's sad people claim I'm not really injured. This was only the second league match I have missed in two and a half seasons. If people think it's because of the contract business, that's a downright lie. 'I've often taken pain-killing injections before Barcelona games. It was only this time when playing for Brazil against Spain a week ago, suddenly, the pain got worse. 'Anyway, few players have done as much for Barca as I have over the last couple of seasons.' Rivaldo hopes to be ready to face Hertha. It matters to Barcelona, who have flopped badly in the Champions League over the last two years, and it matters to Rivaldo. He has heard Pele say that, on current form, he is the world's No.1. But he craves the adulation which would go with the formal confirmation of the European Footballer of the Year award and then the FIFA world crown in January. Lazio wrecked their own image as one of the Champions League favourites when they were thrashed 4-1 by neighbours Roma yesterday - their first defeat of the season and their biggest upset in five years. Sven-Goran Eriksson was reduced to open-mouthed bewilderment as Lazio's lackadaisical defence conceded four goals in the first 31 minutes. All Lazio had to show for spirited but ultimately vain attempts at a second-half recovery was a Sinisa Mihajlovic penalty. Lazio, who visit Marseille on Wednesday, were not the only Champions League challengers who appeared to have taken their eye off the domestic ball. French champions Bordeaux prepared for tomorrow's visit to Valencia by losing 2-1 at home to Saint-Etienne, their second successive defeat. Bordeaux have not won for six matches and are five points behind pace-setters Lyon. In Holland, Feyenoord, who come to Chelsea on Wednesday to renew acquaintance with their former goalkeeper Ed De Goey, could have done with him as they threw away a three-goal lead and had to settle for a 3-3 draw with MVV Maastricht. Even Bayern Munich's 6-1 win over Freiburg in the German Bundesliga was marred by a second-half ankle injury to veteran sweeper Lothar Matthaus who had earlier scored their second goal. Nicolas Anelka's goal drought continued in the post-John Toshack era as Real Madrid drew 1-1 in the Bernabeu stadium last night against Real Sociedad of San Sebastian. The £23million French striker lured from Arsenal had just two shots on goal and then was replaced with six minutes to go. He has played 668 minutes in 11 games and is yet to break his duck.
