228k Sept 28 3.49m - Interview with David on current situation
Uniteds unbeaten runs currently stand at:
29 games League
44 games League and Cup
38 games domestic League and Cup
Message from Paul Hinson:
The 40-game record Nottingham Forest hold is 40 games in domestic League
and Cup. United need to remain unbeaten against Southampton/Chelsea/Watford
and whoever we play in the Worthington Cup 3rd Round to beat it.
The League only record is 42 games, against by Forest, and we would need to
avoid defeat up to around January 15 2000 to manage that!

Subject: Manchester United v Marseille - Guardian
Ferguson has to counter a numbing sensation
Manchester United v Marseille
David Lacey
Wednesday September 29, 1999
It is difficult to see Manchester United failing to qualify for the second
group phase of the Champions League but tonight's encounter will give the
holders the chance to win a match in something more of the style to which
Europe has become accustomed.
However, against a revived Marseille side made even more confident by two
opening group victories, this is unlikely to be easy for a United team
weakened by injuries to Roy Keane, Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville.
Nevertheless they need to overcome a recent series of defensive hiccups at
home which has seen them held to successive draws by Croatia Zagreb,
Wimbledon and Southampton.
A week ago they showed better form in beating Sturm Graz 3-0 but even in
Austria the defence looked suspect. To stand a better chance of topping the
group United need to win this evening, but Marseille are swift and incisive
on the break and have several players well acquainted with their opponents'
style. Fabrizio Ravanelli, Sébastien Perez, Ibrahima Bakayoko and Kaba
Diawara have appeared in the Premiership and have been able to study United
at close quarters.
"They're fantastic because their game is so simple," said Ravanelli
yesterday. "They never fiddle about with the ball. It's impossible to
outpace them so we must try to slow the play down and then launch
counterattacks. The key to the match will be our ability to numb them."
Sir Alex Ferguson agrees. United's manager expects Rolland Courbis, the
Marseille coach, to play Bakayoko as a lone striker in a containing
operation. "Marseille did that in Croatia and won 2-1," he said, "and I
don't think there's any doubt they will do likewise against us. They know
that if they come away from here with something they will still be top of
the group going into their next game, which is at home. I think that will
be their mentality. The most important thing for us is not to lose, but
we're not going into the match in a negative way."
Ferguson shrugged off suggestions that he might be concerned about the
number of cheap goals that the United defence has given away recently.
"It's part of our nature and there are some things you can't change," he
said. "By having that attacking flair we are vulnerable to some suicidal
defending."
Robert Pires, Marseille's captain and most gifted creative player, may be
the principal danger whenever United are caught on the break. Perez, too,
has proved more effective going forward in France than he did defending
while he was at Blackburn.
Both sides have players missing through injuries, with United the worse
hit. Keane is resting his troublesome knee, Giggs has a hamstring problem
and Gary Neville a groin strain. Raimond van der Gouw and Phil Neville will
replace the ineligible Massimo Taibi and Mickael Silvestre in goal and
defence. Marseille will be without Patrick Blondeau, their former Sheffield
Wedneday defender, and a striker, Florian Maurice.
Clearly Ferguson will be looking to David Beckham to provide the sort of
service which will bring out the best in his three strikers Dwight Yorke,
Andy Cole and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. If they are crowded out Paul Scholes
could be United's match-winner with his late runs into scoring positions.
But United will miss Keane. "He is the real boss," Ravanelli admitted. "His
absence is a real blow for them and a little bonus for us."
Manchester United (probable): Van der Gouw; Irwin, Berg, Stam, P Neville;
Beckham, Butt, Scholes, Solskjaer; Cole, Yorke.

Subject: Italian star Fabrizio Ravanelli could captain Marseille tonight
Wednesday, September 29, 4:01am London Time
Fab gets chance to prove point
Italian star Fabrizio Ravanelli could captain Marseille tonight almost
three years after a move of a lifetime to Manchester United collapsed.
The 30-year-old striker has revealed for the first time that only months
after his high profile £7million transfer from Juventus to Middlesbrough,
he was the subject of a shock bid from United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.
Ravanelli was ready to quickly pack his bags and join United only for Boro
boss Bryan Robson and chairman Steve Gibson to block the transfer.
Yesterday, following a training session at Old Trafford before tonight's
Champions League clash with United, Ravanelli revealed: 'I was heartbroken
when the move didn't go through.
'I had only been at Middlesbrough for a few months when I was told United
had come in for me. But there were complications involving the transfer and
it never materialised. I understand the coach and chairman of Middlesbrough
didn't want me to go.
'Manchester United are one of the biggest clubs in the world and it would
have suited me to have joined them. It was a shock at the time when I was
told I was staying with Middlesbrough.'
Now Ravanelli is determined to show United what they missed out on. Coach
Rolland Courbis is prepared to start with the experienced striker alongside
former Everton player Ibrahima Bakayoko and may even make the 'White
Feather' skipper for the night.
Courbis said: 'Ravanelli will be playing and he could be captain. We have
to make that decision in the morning. He could take the captain's armband
from French international Robert Pires.'
Ferguson believes tonight's clash is what the Champions League is all about
following the somewhat muted build-up to United's first two games against
Croatia Zagreb and Sturm Graz. 'This is a game which has more of a European
feel about it,' he said.
'No disrespect to Croatia Zagreb or Sturm Graz but Marseille are past
winners of the competition and have a great tradition. It makes it more of
an appealing game for Manchester United. The players know more about their
stars like Ravenelli, Bakayoko and Pires.'
Ferguson also knows that facing the Group D leaders, United will have to be
on their guard against the comic-cuts defending which lacerated their
ambitions of beating unfancied Southampton at the weekend. With that 3-3
draw still fresh in his mind, Ferguson said: 'We haven't been too generous
in the Champions League so far but don't hold your breath ...
'We have this attacking instinct and tradition but sometimes we are
vulnerable to suicidal defending.'
Ferguson insists that to avoid further damage the concentration level of
Jaap Stam and company against the experienced French side will have to be
razor sharp. 'Hopefully, if our concentration is good and our discipline is
good, we will be OK because we always create chances.'
United will be without their midfield talisman Roy Keane, who has been
ordered to rest his troublesome knee for three weeks, while Dutch
goalkeeper Raimond van der Gouw will replace the ineligible Massimo Taibi
with Phil Neville coming in for Mickael Silvestre.
Ferguson's side will defend a proud European record tonight - they are
unbeaten in continental combat since December 1997 - with extra relish due
to Marseille's lofty status. 'We're aware that it may have taken time for
this season's competition to capture the imagination,' said Ferguson.
'Don't forget last year we were in the group of so-called death with teams
like Barcelona and Bayern Munich. It offered a different perspective. But
this season the importance of the outcome is just as great - we have to get
through.'
MANCHESTER UNITED (probable): van der Gouw; Irwin, Berg, Stam, P Neville;
Beckham, Scholes, Butt; Sheringham, Cole, Yorke.
MARSEILLE: Porato; Blondeau, Berizzo, Gallas, Perez; Brando, Pires, Issa,
Luccin, Dalmat; Bakayoko.
Referee: J M Garcia Aranda (Spain).
TV times: ITV, live at 7.30pm, highlights 11.30pm.

Subject: RAVENELLI 'COULD HAVE JOINED UNITED'
Marseille striker Fabrizio Ravanelli tonight revealed he almost joined
Manchester United before joining the French club that now stand in the
European Cup winners' immediate path for Champions League success.
The Italian striker said that the proposed transfer to United came in 1997
after Middlesbrough's relegation from the Premiership.
Ravenelli told of how the move fell through because it became too
complicated, which would not have been the biggest surprise given his wages
at the Riverside which were reputedly as high as £42,000 per week two years
ago.
Old Trafford had then, and now, as evidenced by the current Roy Keane
contract impasse, a strict wages ceiling that would not have accommodated
Ravenelli's likely demands.
"I had a chance when I was playing with Middlesbrough to go to Manchester
United," he said.
Ravenelli then made a thinly-veiled jibe at Bryan Robson, the Middlesbrough
manager with whom he had so many run-ins with during his season on
Teesside: "But the transfer arrangements became very complicated and the
Middlesbrough coach did not want me to go. He wanted me to stay and play in
the First Division.
"Manchester United are one of the greatest teams in the world and I have a
lot of respect for them. It would have been wonderful to play for them.
"They are the club everyone dreams of playing for and even if you are on
the bench you will still play because of their squad system.
"But instead Rolland Courbis came in and took me to Marseille and now I'm
playing with another great team."
Ravanelli enjoyed his only appearance at Old Trafford with Middlesbrough as
he scored in a vital end-of-season game back in 1997 when Boro drew 3-3
with United.
"I also hit the post and then I got injured and had to go off," said the
Italian star.
"I remember the atmosphere was tremendous and when they got a corner you
would have thought they had scored."
Now the silver-haired assassin is back with Marseille, for whom he is their
leading scorer this term.
He has picked out Jaap Stam - his likely man-marker - as one of their key
players. "We will be up against one of the strongest defenders in the world
in Jaap Stam. He is a great player and someone I have a lot of respect for."
Meanwhile, the tactical sparring between Sir Alex Ferguson has started with
Ravenelli and visiting coach Courbis insisting the Italian will partner
former Everton striker Ibrahima Bakayoko in attack, whereas Sir Alex
Ferguson was confident that Ravanelli would start on the bench with
Bakayoko as a lone striker.
. Team (probable): Porato, Perez, Gallas, Berizzo, Blondeau, Issa, Brando,
Luccin, Dalmat, Ravanelli, Bakayoko.

Subject: AF is fuming with the FA over their intention to haul David Beckham
Sir Alex Ferguson is fuming with the FA over their intention to haul David
Beckham before them and warn him on his conduct.
FA compliance officer Graham Bean is to hold a meeting with Beckham to
discuss a number of incidents this season where the England star's
temperament has been called into question.
However the United manager is privately fuming at what he sees as
interfering from the FA, and he is unhappy that his prized star is being
unnecessarily dragged into the spotlight.
Ferguson has always been fiercely protective and loyal to his players - as
shown during Eric Cantona's trouble-filled spell at the club - and he
believes that his own way of handling his own players should be good enough
for the FA.

Subject: Silvestre: Eric was an influence ««
Mickael Silvestre has revealed former United legend Eric Cantona's success
at Old Trafford was a major influence on him joining the club.
Silvestre reveals: "It contributed to the pull of the club. Everyone back
home in France is aware of Cantona's greatness and what he achieved here.
"Cantona is a legend, but he is a modest man all the same. If I achieve a
fraction of what he did at United, I would die a happy man.
"There will never be another like him and, even now, he's still a very
popular man in France.
"I've seen a great deal of television footage of his career at United and I
share his passion for the game. I feel very honoured to follow him at this
club and I am determined not to let anyone down."

Subject: Arse fury as Carlton opts for United :)))))))
By Martin Lipton
Arsenal fans have flooded the offices of London ITV company Carlton with
complaints after discovering they will not be able to watch tonight's
Champions League game with Barcelona live on television.
Although only 1,700 Arsenal fans have tickets for Nou Camp, Carlton has
refused to opt out of the ITV network and screen the Gunners' crucial game
rather than Manchester United's home match with Marseille.
The decision sparked outrage from Arsenal fans. Carlton spokesman Chris
Strange admitted he had been inundated with calls. Explaining the decision,
Carlton issued a statement saying it was showing United 'in the interests
of all our viewers,' claiming audience research suggested there would be
more complaints if the game in Barcelona were screened.
Effectively then, Carlton was saying that the interests of the floating
football fan in London who might want to see David Beckham smile at Posh
Spice after scoring from a free kick came ahead of the committed supporters
missing out on arguably Arsenal's biggest European game for a decade.
Strange said: 'Whatever game we screened we were going to upset some
sections of the viewing public. We are not blanking Arsenal and we're sorry
if we've upset Arsenal fans. But this is the choice that's been made.'
The fact that more than 65,000 Arsenal fans were at Wembley for last week's
home game with AIK Solna proved the lie to the suggestion that there was
not that much interest in the Gunners' European campaign and the audience
research pointed to by Carlton was hardly a reasonable comparison.
Last season, United faced the huge attractions of Barcelona - both games
screened live on the network - and Bayern Munich while Arsenal met the less
attractive Lens, Dynamo Kiev and Panathinaikos. Unsurprisingly, the
audience was down on the United figures.
When it was pointed out that the company had, until recently, advertised
itself as 'Carlton for London,' there was an embarrassed reaction. Strange
added: 'Yes, some people have pointed that out but the Carlton region is
not just Greater London.'
Carlton, meanwhile, is in secret talks about launching a football channel
dedicated to Midlands clubs. Bosses from the station - which owns Midlands
franchise Central - put their multi-million pound proposals to at least
five clubs at a confidential meeting last week.
Carlton wants to team up with Aston Villa, Coventry, Leicester, Derby and
Birmingham to run a channel which would screen local football news,
analysis and archive games, with the package likely to be offered to local
cable operators.
Although live or even highlights footage of this season's games could not
be screened yet, the situation is almost certain to change when the next
Premiership television contract comes into force in 2001.
The talks opened the possibility of the clubs showing away games on local
channels, almost certainly on a pay-per-view basis.
