PAUL's Daily Comment:
*********************

This is the most important day in our history for 31 years.
We have never won a major European game on Spanish soil.
Until this season we had never won in Italy, but in Turin
we defied the critics.

Whatever happens tonight it has been a great season. So many
highlights, The late goals to KO Liverpool, 8 at Forest,
Giggs goal of the season at Villa Park, destroying Juventus
away, Cole sealing the Premiership, Sheringham ruling Wembley.

What better night to be crowned Champions of Europe again than
what would have been Sir Matts 90th Birthday?

Wherever you are, Sing Up For The Champions!

HISTORY AWAITS

90 minutes. 5,400 seconds.
							Not that long, is
it? Barring extra-time and
penalties, this is all the
time that stands between
Manchester United
Football Club and a large
place in the sporting
history books.

At the Nou Camp,
Barcelona, United come face to face again with
Bayern Munich. Two draws against the Germans
this
season have given us no clues as to where the
trophy will be heading on Wednesday evening.

The draw at the Olympic Stadium should have been
a win for the Reds, but for that late Elber
equaliser. The draw at Old Trafford petered out
to a non-event once both teams realised that a
point apiece would see them both through.

Both teams will be missing vital cogs in their
engines come the final. Roy Keane and Paul
Scholes are both suspended, while for Bayern,
Giovane Elber and Bixente Lizarazu are both
injured.

However, both teams have good squads, and can
bring in quality players as cover. United may go
with Ronny Johnsen and Nicky Butt in midfield,
with either David May or possibly Gary Neville
partnering Jaap Stam at the back.

However, Alex Ferguson was fulsome in his praise
of David Beckham following the Cup final, which
saw Beckham switch into a central midfield role
after the departure of Keane. He may get the
chance to play in his favoured position again on
Wednesday.

The battle in the middle of the park, should
Beckham play there, will be fascinating. There,
he will encounter Stefan Effenberg, a tremendous
player who can boss the game given the
opportunity. He was sent home from the 1994
World
Cup for a gesture to the crowd, but has put
those
disciplinary problems behind him, and is now a
mature play-maker. He could be the difference.

Alongside Effenberg, the ever-impressive Jens
Jeremies will show off his huge energy reserves,
and will run all day to provide service for the
forwards. Carsten Jancker, the six feet four
Bayern striker, will look to give United
problems
in the air, and will partner Alexander Zickler
upfront.

Another experienced campaigner, Lothar Matthaus,
continues to ignore the restraints of age, and
at
38 is still among the best in the world. As
sweeper, his lack of pace may be shown up by
Cole
and Yorke, but if Sheringham is preferred after
his display against Newcastle, we could witness
football being played in the head rather than on
the run. In for Lizarazu comes Michael Tarnat,
an
experienced wing-back.

In each goalmouth, world class keepers are on
show. Oliver Kahn holds the record for a
transfer
fee paid for a goalkeeper in Germany - £2
million
- and is the current national keeper. His
counterpart at the opposite end's career with
United has been well documented, and is about to
draw to a close. The European Cup final is the
perfect swansong for Peter Schmeichel.

Bayern have the edge on United in terms of
European Cups, having won three to the Reds'
one.
The Germans' trio came in the space of three
years, between 1973 and 1975, under the
captaincy
of Franz Beckenbauer. Der Kaiser is now the club
president, and would like nothing more than to
be
involved in another Cup triumph.

But then, neither would our own Kaiser Fergie. A
European Cup triumph would see him elevated to
the heights of the only other United manager to
achieve the feat - Sir Matt Busby.

So much history is ready for the making. Are we
ready? You bet we are!

Probable teams:

United: Schmeichel; Irwin, Stam, May, G Neville;
Giggs, Johnsen, Butt, Beckham; Cole, Yorke.

Bayern Munich: Kahn; Babbel, Matthaus, Kuffour;
Tarnat, Effenberg, Jeremies, Basler, Strunz;
Jancker, Zickler.

FERGIE KNOWS THE
SCORE

Tuesday, May 25, 1999 06:00

Alex Ferguson's knowledge of
European football is almost
encyclopedic.

This Wednesday, the United
manager will sit his final
exam and if he's really done
his homework, he'll surely
graduate with honours.

For a start, Fergie knows precisely where
Bayern's strengths lie. "In any game of
football, you have players of potential,
players
with ability and influential players," he
recites.

"I think Bayern have influential players.
Matthaus and Effenberg are players of
influence.
That's where they will be concentrating."

Having already played Bayern twice this season,
Fergie feels he's learned enough. "I thought we
were the better team in Munich," he boasts.

"I thought the match at Old Trafford was very,
very even, but Bayern showed a bit more
experience than us. Hopefully we've improved
enough to make the difference now. I thought we
played very well in Munich."

While confident in his own ability, Fergie is
also full of praise for his opposite number at
the Olympic Stadium, Ottmar Hitzfeld. "Hitzfeld
is a fantastic manager and he's a very good man
also. He's a real gentleman," gushes the United
chief.

"I admire him dearly. I gained a certain
impression from seeing him on the touchline at
Dortmund, but when I actually met him, I found
a
different person. On the pitch, he's a focused
and agitated coach, but he's very relaxed away
from work."

That may have something to do with the fact
that
some of the responsibility of running Bayern
Munich has been taken off his shoulders. The
club have a general manager, Uli Hoeness, who
has taken away some of Hitzfeld's
administrative
workload. Uli's appointment is something that
Fergie can see happening over here in the near
future.

"I think there will be a trend in England in
the
future where responsibilities are split between
a coach and a general manager, like in Europe.
It's becoming more and more difficult to do the
job the way I do it. I think it's an
achievement
to have lasted thirteen years," he reflects.

As far as Wednesday night goes, Fergie is just
hoping for a good game to fit the grand
occasion. "There's been a history of the
European Cup final ending 1-0, or on penalties.
Over the last decade and a half there has been
a
trend of that, but we hope that United and
Bayern elevate themselves above that and
produce
a really good game.

"If you asked at the start of the season which
trophy you would like to win, you'd say the
Champions League. I would. That's the trophy
which would elevate Manchester United," he
admits.

Well, we've got as high as we can in England,
with three Doubles in the last six seasons.
Europe remains top of the Ferguson shopping
list, and winning it once will not be enough,
knowing the Boss. You have been warned!

Bayern Munich

 Season Formed:
               1900

Bayern Munich, one of the most successful
German teams, were founded on the 27th January
1900. As is common with most German football
clubs, they embrace a number of other sports -
 basketball, chess, bowling, gymnastics, table
 tennis and handball.

International Honours won include the World
Club Championship in 1976, 3 European
Champions
 Cups in 1974, 1975 and 1976, a European Cup
Winners Cup in 1967 and a UEFA Cup in 1996.

Domestically, they have won 14 League titles,
9
National Cups, 2 National Supercups and 2
 National League Cups.

Their Olympic Stadium holds 59,000 for
European
ties, and 63,000 in domestic league games.
Their record attendance was 78,000, achieved
twice, in 1976 against Real Madrid, and in
1981
 against Liverpool.

STREET PARTY
BACK ON THE
ROAD

The streets of Manchester
and Trafford will be filled
with colour and noise on
Thursday evening when the
residents welcome home
their United heroes.

Whether they win or lose in
Barcelona, the players can expect a red hot
reception from their supporters, who will line
the route from Sale to the city centre in their
thousands.

Conservative estimates suggest there will be at
least 250,000 fans on the streets, eager for a
glimpse of the Premiership trophy, the FA Cup
and hopefully, the European Cup.

"It's something the players want to do, and
they're looking forward to it," said David
Beswitherick, Company Secretary for Manchester
United PLC.

"We hope that everyone enters into the spirit
of the occasion, gets bladdered and enjoys
themselves." "We really wanted Manchester City
to parade a trophy too, but we'll all pop
our clogs waiting for that eventuality."

The open-top bus parade will start near the
1999 MUTV Masterfans house at 6 pm in
Marsland Road, Sale. It will proceed
down the A56 into Stretford, along Talbot Road
past Trafford Town Hall and then into the
 city centre along Deansgate.

The final stop for the bus is the Manchester
Evening News Arena, where a reception will be
held for the club. 9 pm is the estimated time
of arrival there.

Tickets for the Arena, priced at £3 each, will
be on sale to the general public at the venue's
box office from 9 am on Wednesday morning. No
tickets will be available from Old Trafford.

The proceeds from the reception will go to 'Buy
Sheringham a new Ferrari," the first charity
chosen by Alex Ferguson to benefit from his
 testimonial year.

News of the parade will delight the United fans
who were so disappointed last weekend when the
traditional event was shelved. David Acton,
Leader of Trafford Borough Council, explained
why there had been a change of heart:

"Over the last few days, the two local
authorities of Trafford and Manchester have had
very constructive discussions with the football
club and senior police officers.

"We managed to resolve the very real concerns
we
had over security and safety, Mr Edwards was
overcome by the weight of opinion, bunged us
a few quid, and consequently the two local
authorities have now invited Manchester
United to parade through Trafford and
 Manchester on Thursday night.

"We can now look forward to the biggest street
party Manchester has had for some years."
"We have laid on extra tankers of Boddingtons
Bitter for Mick Meade and the Throstles Nest
regulars who return in time from Barcelona, and
some wacky baccy for the locals. Barry Leeming
is stopping off to act as DJ en route, and for
those wanting a request playing on the route,
his mobile number is 00 45 10203040."

UNITED SONGBOOK

Standing in the Nou Camp? Watching in the Pub or at Home?
Dialling Barry Leeming on his mobile to take in the atmosphere?

Sing up for the Champions!!

Glory, Glory, Man United
Glory Glory , Man United
Glory Glory, Man United
And the Reds go marching on,on,on

Will never die, will never die
Will never die, will never die,
we'll keep the Red flag flying high
'Coz man United will never die
Tune: The Red Flag

We're just one of those teams
That you see now and then
We often score six but we seldom score ten
We beat 'em at home and we beat 'em away
We kill any B*stards that get in our way
We are the pride of all Europe
The cock of the North
We hate the Scousers
The Cockneys of course
We are United
Without any doubt
We are the Manchester Boys,
La la la la la la la la la la la la

Forever and Ever
We'll Follow the boys
Of Man United
The Busby Babes

Hello, Hello we are the Busby Boys
Hello, Hello, we are the Busby Boys
And if you are a City fan
Surrender or you'll die
We all follow United

Yip Jaap Stam is a big Dutchman
Get past him if you f*cking can
Try a little trick and he'll make you look a prick
Yip Jaap, Jaap Stam

Oh Andy Cole,
Andy Andy Andy Cole, Andy Andy Andy Cole,
Andy Andy Andy Cole,

David May, Superstar
Got more medals than Shearer

You are my Solskjaer, my Ole Solksjaer
You make me happt when skies are grey
Though Alan Shearer was f*cking dearer
Please don't take my Solksjaer away

Na Na Na Na Na Na Na, Na Na Na Na Na,
Keano
