MAY JOINS BRUCE IN DECEMBER David May has teamed up with his former Old Trafford team-mate Steve Bruce and joined Huddersfield on loan for a month. The 29-year-old, who cost United £1.4m from Blackburn in July 1994, has made three appearances for United this season, and only one in the Premiership, against Leicester in November. His chances have been limited by the signings of Jaap Stam, Mickael Silvestre and Henning Berg. A Huddersfield spokesman confirmed to Sky Sports Online: "David has joined us for a month's loan from immediate effect, and he will go straight into contention for the Boxing Day game against Crewe. "We have been unlucky at centre-half, as Chris Lucketti broke his leg in the game against Bolton. He had a scan and the news is good, he can up his training now but won't be back until the end of January at the earliest. "And Ken Monkou has knee ligament damage and will be out until March. Steve Bruce has taken the view that you need as much centre-half cover as possible, especially with all the Christmas games." Bruce's former boss clearly disagrees. Despite having Ronny Johnsen and Wes Brown still out through injury, he has shipped out defender John Curtis to Barnsley for a second month.

MEN - United hit-man stoked up for Christmas By John Prince TOP scorer Andy Cole should be fit and eager to go for the first of Manchester United’s important two remaining Premiership games before the Reds’ adventure in Brazil. The 14-goal hit-man had to sit out the triumph last weekend over West Ham at Upton Park after injuring a rib in training 24 hours earlier. Now the 28-year-old says: ‘‘The injury isn’t too bad now and I am hoping I will be fit enough for the Old Trafford game against Bradford on Boxing Day. ‘‘Obviously the one at Sunderland on Tuesday is also a very big one for us. And after that, it’s off to Brazil in the New Year for the next trophy,’’ he said. The promise of intense heat and humidity in South America sparks no apprehension among the Reds as they bid for the World Club Championship title — their fifth major prize in a year. Cole said today: ‘‘I think the lads are looking forward to going there and winning the competition. To have that fifth trophy would be really nice for us and the club.’’ And as for the lesser-known clubs involved in the contest in Brazil, Cole is philosophical. ‘‘It doesn’t matter who takes part. At the end of the day it isn’t our job to pick the opponents. And we are going out there, anyway, to enjoy it, as well as trying to win the cup.’’ Like the rest of the United squad, Cole’s focus now is on the club’s present progress in the Premiership at home and in the big world contest on which they will embark on January 6. ‘‘The Champions’ League is clearly on hold for us just now because we don’t have another match in that competition until March. And personally I have no thoughts at the moment about England in either the Euro Championship or later in the World Cup.’’ The player who, in his just-published autobiography controversially wrote about his lack of England appearances, and also suggested Newcastle hero Alan Shearer was the national team’s ‘‘favourite chosen son’’ with a ‘‘guaranteed place’’ in the national side said: ‘‘I should say England is the least important thing on my mind just now. Manchester United is the main thing at the moment.’’ Cole, who made only a brief appearance in England’s crucial Euro play- off tie against Scotland said: ‘‘As far as England’s pairing with Germany, if we play to our full potential I can’t see why we can’t beat them.’’ Cole is objective, too, about United’s much-lauded win at West Ham, mostly thanks to a superb first-half performance. The Hammers got the 3-0 deficit back to a single goal gap and ought to have equalised when di Canio fluffed a chance to complete his hat-trick. David Beckham and Denis Irwin are battling to be fit for United’s Boxing Day game at Old Trafford against Bradford.

MAKE MY DAVID EVEN POSHER Victoria 'Posh' Beckham put the cat among the pigeons on Friday evening when she declared her husband, David is due a hefty pay rise. The words will send a few tremors along Manchester United plc as they come only a couple of days on from Martin Edwards insisting that none of the other Reds can expect an increase in salary simply because skipper Roy Keane is to receive £50,000 a week when his new deal kicks in next year. Not so Mr Edwards - or at least not according to Becks' Spice wife, who revealed on national radio this Friday that her multi-millionaire footballing ace should receive a rise. On the thorny subject, which United feared would become a major issue, she said: "I don't know what kind of difference it's going to make - I know that David's money should go up though. I know that much." Becks already earns in excess of £20,000 a week and has several lucrative sponsorship deals making him one of the richest sportsman in the world. And they world might well be seeing even more of the paparazzi-hassled England international - with the wife letting slip he will certainly look to widen his horizons before the end of his career. "At some point he will move," Posh went on. "I think that playing abroad is something he would like to do - but not yet it's not right at the moment." But if you think this all underlines the media headlines of last month which claimed she ruled the roost and was determined to bring Becks back south - for the better shopping - then think again. Mrs Beckham scoffed: "As if I'd not like somewhere because of the shops. The funny thing is, there are some really good shops. David's happy up there, I'm happy up there

Question mark over Beckham / WINDASS A DOUBT FOR OLD TRAFFORD TRIP Question mark over Beckham David Beckham is Manchester United's only doubt as they prepare for a Christmas programme of games against two of last season's promoted sides. United face Bradford at Old Trafford on Boxing Day then on Tuesday night the Treble winners have their first experience of Sunderland's Stadium of Light before heading for Brazil and the FIFA World Club Championship. Between now and Sunday, Beckham will continue to have treatment on a hamstring injury picked up during Saturday's 4-2 win against West Ham but manager Sir Alex Ferguson says he expects him to be fit. Mark Bosnich is also in full training again and pushing for a return over Christmas. The Australian keeper has been out of action since December 4 when he strained a hamstring during the 5-1 win over Everton. Bosnich may find the going tough because his replacement Raimond van der Gouw stayed in goal for the 3-0 home win over Valencia and Saturday's game at West Ham. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Bradford boss Paul Jewell only has one doubt going into the Boxing Day clash against Manchester United at Old Trafford. Dean Windass returned to action last week in the 2-0 home victory over Newcastle following a short lay-off with an ankle injury. But the midfielder went over on his ankle against the Magpies and is likely to undergo a late fitness test. Neil Redfearn is available again after a one-match ban, but back-up striker Isaiah Rankin is out for three games following a sending-off in a recent reserve outing.

Rivaldo race hots up: Forget it, United By John Drayton Lazio are ready to thwart any bid by Manchester United to recruit the services of European Footballer of the Year Rivaldo. According to reports from Italy, the Serie A club are ready to pay a world record transfer sum of £39million to sign the 27- year- old Brazilian from Barcelona. Lazio president Sergio Cragnotti is reportedly ready to break the bank to acquire his services, despite opposition from Barcelona's Dutch coach Louis Van Gaal. The transfer could be financed by the sale of Italy defender Alessandro Nesta and Chile striker Marcelo Salas - ironically another player long admired by United boss Sir Alex Ferguson. Rivaldo has fallen out with Barcelona coach Van Gaal, who claims the Brazilian tries to dictate his role in the side and attempts to sidestep the coach's authority. Rivaldo favours a central midfield role and has refused to play out wide. The Brazilian will be up against United's David Beckham and Parma's Argentinian striker Gabriel Batistuta for the title of FIFA world player of the year. World soccer's governing body have announced that the three players came out top in a poll of 140 national team coaches. The winner will be announced at the FIFA world player gala, which takes place in Brussels on January 24. There have been two previous Brazilian winners of the award - Romario in 1994 and Ronaldo in 1996 and 1997, but Beckham and Batistuta would be the first winners from their respective countries. Last year's winner was French World Cup hero Zinedine Zidane. Among those due to be inducted into the International Football Hall of Champions are Northern Ireland and United legend George Best, Brazilians Didi and Zico and Marco van Basten of Holland. Meanwhile, Jordi Cruyff will be playing for a dream move back to the city of Barcelona when he turns out for a Catalan representative side against Yugoslavia. The Dutch international striker has been granted a free transfer by Manchester United and Barcelona's city rivals Espanyol want to take him back into Spanish football. But their Argentinian manager Miguel Angel Brindisi wants to check on 25-year-old Cruyff's form and fitness before offering him a contract and will watch the game at The Nou Camp before making a final decision. Cruyff's father Johan, who is still aggrieved with Barcelona over the way his eight-year spell as manager ended in 1996, has been instrumental in engineering his son's proposed move to Espanyol. Jordi, 25, played under his father at Barcelona before signing for United for £1.4million three years ago. Since then he has started just 14 Premiership games.
