Subject: Zidane out? TURIN, Italy, March 20 (Reuters) - Zinedine Zidane of Juventus, the world player of the year, could be out of the first leg of the European Cup semifinal against Manchester United on April 7, his club confirmed on Saturday. Zidane injured a knee in Juventus' 1-1 draw at Olympiakos Piraeus in the second leg of their quarter-final on Wednesday night and although it is too early to know for certain how bad the injury is, Juventus team doctor Riccardo Agricola fears the worst. Agricola told Italian sports daily La Gazzetta dello Sport he thought it would be diccicult, if not impossible for Zidane to recover full fitness in time to play against United. "The knee will be immobilised by a brace for 10 days, during which the player will undergo physiotherapy and will work on muscle tone," he added. Zidane scored a memorable goal with a last-minute free-kick when Juventus lost 3-2 at Old Trafford in last season's Champions League game there. Although that goal did not save them from defeat on the night, it helped save them from being eliminated from the competition, and they went on to reach the final for the third successive year, although they lost 1-0 to Real Madrid in Amsterdam.

Subject: MANCHESTER UNITED v EVERTON NEVILLE HAPPY TO BE JACK OF ALL TRADES Phil Neville knows it's vital to be versatile at Manchester United. In the cut-throat competition for places at Old Trafford, Neville has increased his chances of playing by being able to slot in anywhere. The adaptable Neville can play in any position along the backline and in midfield. He has also shown he is an effective man marker after he shackled Chelsea's Gianfranco Zola in the FA Cup quarter-final at Old Trafford. Neville could play in one of two roles against Everton today at Old Trafford. Manager Alex Ferguson must find a new central midfield pairing following the suspensions to Roy Keane and Paul Scholes and the England international could fill one of those berths. Ferguson may also decide to give Denis Irwin a breather following the demanding Champions League game against Inter Milan, and Neville could come in at left back. Typical of the mild-mannered Neville, he does not mind where he plays as long as he plays. ''If you've got many strings to your bow it probably means you will get more games than if you just play in one set position,'' he said. ''If I'm called upon to do a different job I will do it. ''If the manager wants me to play in a different role then I will be up for it. Short-term, I'm happy with the situation and I just hope it continues. I think there's a good chance that I will play against Everton. There are a few suspensions and knocks in the squad and I'm ready to play if asked.'' Neville has figured in ten of United's last 11 games in various roles after a spell out of the side and he believes this run has helped him force his way back into the England set-up. He was left out of the squad for the France game last month, but new coach Kevin Keegan has included him in his party to face Poland in Saturday's crucial Euro 2000 qualifier. Neville said: ''Alex Ferguson has given me plenty of playing time recently and that has helped a great deal. I feel I have got my confidence back.'' However before the 22-year-old can start thinking about England, there is the pressing matter of Everton. Once again the Blues are involved in the relegation scrap and have the lowest goalscoring average in the league of just 0.75 strikes per game. Neville does not think this tells the true picture of Everton's recent form. ''They have been a bit up and down recently,'' he said. ''They had a good away win at Blackburn and they had a good run in the FA Cup before they got beat at Newcastle. They're blowing hot and cold and hopefully we will catch them on an off day. It's been a good week for us after getting through to the Champions League semi-finals and hopefully we will round it off with a victory against Everton.''

Subject: Toffees Preview (Times) Manchester United v Everton BY KEVIN McCARRA Today, 3.0pm (sold out) To call it an after-glow scarcely does justice to the voltage of the joy experienced by Manchester United supporters after success over Internazionale in the quarter-finals of the European Cup. A scorching satisfaction burns happily through them. Yet it is wrong to think that one can measure the worth of the team in a single evening at the San Siro. It is the ability to negotiate large batches of games that impresses and they appear far less likely to fold under the weight of fixtures this season. An extended squad has helped, but the maturing of several young players counts for even more. Of late, United, who will be without the suspended Paul Scholes and Roy Keane tomorrow, have appreciated perfectly just how they should allocate their energy and concentration. The smoothness of the process is reflected in a sequence of results unblemished by a defeat. United last lost, to Middlesbrough, at Old Trafford on December 19. In three tournaments, they have since taken 14 victories and four draws from 18 matches. Like misers who have pounced on a bargain, they may even be deriving a special glee from the occasional lacklustre performances that nonetheless bring a full three points. Adversaries who hope that anti-climax will afflict United after a European Cup tie are likely to be disappointed. Everton are in too much trouble for such wistful delusions. Yet again, the task of remaining in the Premiership will tear at muscles and nerves, but they are a much better side than is sometimes appreciated. They are seen to best effect in their away matches, where they score more frequently because the issue of goals seems less daunting than it does at an anguished Goodison Park. There have been many misleading indications that Everton are about to assert themselves and stride into a position of safety in the table. The most recent came when they recovered from falling 1-0 behind at Ewood Park to beat Blackburn Rovers 2-1 with a pair of goals from Ibrahima Bakayoko, whose slow adaptation to English football is as harrowing to fretful Everton supporters as it is to the Ivory Coast forward. The notion that a breakthrough had occurred was mocked by the next result, a 2-0 loss to Arsenal at Goodison in which Don Hutchison, a telling performer of late, was sent off in a decision of undue harshness. Any such blow rocks Everton, because they lack the firepower to establish the kind of advantage that protects a team against setbacks. Walter Smith, the manager, lacks money and has been trying to take an experienced, proven forward on loan, but he knows that any club in possession of such a figure is unlikely to part with him on any terms. For Everton, life is turning into a series of conundrums. MANCHESTER UNITED (possible; 3-5-2): P Schmeichel - G Neville, J Stam, H Berg, P Neville - D Beckham, N Butt, R Johnsen, J Blomqvist - D Yorke, A Cole. EVERTON (possible; 3-5-2): T Myhre - D Watson, M Materazzi, D Unsworth - D Weir, A Grant, O Dacourt, N Barmby, M Ball - I Bakayoko, D Hutchison. Referee: M Riley. Premiership record v Everton at Old Trafford: Played 6, Won 4, Drawn 1, Lost 1, For 9, Against 5. Leading goalscorers: 16 D Yorke (Manchester United); 4 D Cadamarteri, I Bakayoko (Everton). Suspended: P Scholes, R Keane (Manchester United). Websites: www.manutd.com/home/default.sps; evertonfc.merseyworld.com WILLIAM HILL ODDS: Manchester United 2-9; Everton 9-1; Draw 4-1. PREDICTION: United add one more win to their hoard.

Subject: FERGUSON PRIMES HIS MAXIMUM MEN By David Anderson, PA Sport Alex Ferguson has set his Manchester United players the target of winning every match until the end of the season. United have not lost in three months and Ferguson wants them to keep winning if they are to achieve the dream treble of Champions' League, Premiership and FA Cup. Next up for United at Old Trafford tomorrow are Everton and Ferguson does not want his players to ease up. He knows Everton are ready to capitalise on any European hangover following his players' midweek exertions against Inter Milan. He is determined to consolidate United's four-point lead at the top of the table against the relegation-threatened Merseysiders. "It's a big game and I'm sure Everton will be waiting for us to show some signs of dipping because we have been in a massive game on Wednesday," said Ferguson. "Obviously the players have got to recover from that and I'm confident that they can recover. "They know it's an important game and there's no way back for us - we have to win every game now." Despite Everton's relegation problems, Ferguson is confident his old friends Walter Smith and Archie Knox, who was his first assistant at United, can keep the Blues up. But of more immediate concern for Ferguson is who to pick for the game and he must perform heart transplant surgery on his side. He has had the heart ripped out of his team by the suspensions to central midfield pair Roy Keane and Paul Scholes. Few teams, if any, could handle the loss of two such influential players but Ferguson is confident his vast squad will cope. Nicky Butt could slot in while Ferguson also has the options of Phil Neville and Ronny Johnsen, who played in midfield against Inter. "Roy Keane and Paul Scholes are both suspended and that means we will have a new partnership in central midfield," said Ferguson. "We've got options and Nicky Butt's fit and is one, while Ronny Johnsen played there on Wednesday night and we'll just have to see how he's come through that. "So we have options and we'll just have a look at the squad to make sure we get the right balance." Ferguson is likely to make one or two other changes as part of his squad rotation policy and Jesper Blomqvist and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could figure against the Blues, who have the lowest goal-scoring average of 0.75 strikes per game in the league. One player who will not want a rest now that he is back to top form is Peter Schmeichel and he needs just one more clean sheet to beat Alex Stepney's club record of 175 shut-outs in all competitions.

If ever they are playing in your town
You must get to that football ground
Take a lesson come to see
          Football taught by Matt Busby
          Manchester, Manchester United
A bunch of bouncing Busby Babes
          They deserve to be knighted
