Fergie "to shear the Rams" today!

Important info on Rio from Mike Dobbin:

Re the tournament in Brazil, United have not yet announced ticket
information, but have asked branches for estimates of numbers required.
Contact United immediately and ask to be given ticket information
when this is available, qouting your United membership number.
If you are not a member then this may be a problem if they are supplying
tickets to members only.

Ken Merrett has just visited Rio to check out the arrangements, and adivised
members at the branch conference on Saturday that they should think
carefully before going to the tournament, since Rio is an extremely
dangerous place, with a very high murder rate.

NEVILLE BACK IN ACTION Fit-again Gary Neville could start only his second Premiership game of the season for Manchester United at Derby tomorrow. Teddy Sheringham and Nicky Butt are also back from injury but there is a doubt over Denis Irwin's fitness. He returned from the Republic of Ireland's Euro 2000 play-off clash in Turkey with an ankle injury. Derby are unlikely to have any new faces in their ranks when they take on Manchester United at Pride Park tomorrow. Manager Jim Smith is pursuing Scotland duo Colin Hendry and Craig Burley but no deals are expected to be completed until next week. That leaves Smith to juggle a depleted squad in which Dean Sturridge is the only experienced striker. (365)

United stars return to league action Manchester United's stars return back to league action, following their respective international exploits last week, on Saturday when they travel to Derby. Back in contention for a starting place are England internationals Nicky Butt, Teddy Sherringham and Gary Neville. The latter is expected to make the starting eleven with the other resorting to a place on the bench. The early worries over Mark Bosnich have eased and he is expected to continue between the posts. However, Denis Irwin is a doubt as he is suffering an ankle strain. Otherwise the team will be the same as the one that took United to the top of the table against Leicester earlier this month.

Book review - unaltered from 365 - How United Fans Beat Murdoch 365 BOOK REVIEWS How United Fans Beat Murdoch, The Village Team That Won The FA Cup And Why Cash (No, Not The Aussie Tennis Bloke) Runs Today’s Football NOT FOR SALE: MANCHESTER UNITED, MURDOCH AND THE DEFEAT OF BSKYB Adam Brown and Andy Walsh Mainstream Publishing, pb, £9.99 In September 1998, Rupert Murdoch tabled a bid to buy the richest and most successful football club in the world. Not for Sale tells the David and Goliath story of how a group of “raggedy-a***” football supporters defeated the media tyrant and saved football. Well, not really. But the story, told by insiders Brown and Walsh, is truly inspiring and proof that supporters are far from powerless. The narrative works best when it chronicles the hard work of campaigners. Though essential to the book, the technical and legal stuff sometimes slows it down. The book is meticulously put together but lacks a little on the entertainment side. Still, any defeat of Murdoch is entertaining enough in itself, isn’t it?

GERMAN REF FOR UNITED German referee Hellmut Krug will referee Manchester United's Toyota Cup clash with Palmeiras in Tokyo on November 30. The 43-year-old German topped a UEFA shortlist for the clash between European champions United and the Sao Paolo-based South American Cup winners. Krug refereed United's 2-0 Champions' League win over Inter Milan in March and their 1-0 defeat in Marseille last month.

Keano's wage demands From: Chris From the Press Association today: " Keane is reputed to want around £40,000-a-year to sign a new contract, and his future has overshadowed United's season following their historic Treble from the previous campaign. " If all he wants is £800 per week, lets just have a whip round!

Man Utd ace John Curtis on loan to Barnsley «« Dave Bassett has brought in Manchester United defender John Curtis on loan to strengthen the rear-guard. With Kevin Austin, Adie Moses and David Tuttle all out injured, Barnsley's defensive resources have been stretched in recent weeks. The 21-year-old Curtis, who plays at right-back or centre-back will be a very useful addition to the squad. A regular member of the England Under-21 team, Curtis has made a number of first team appearances. But he has failed to hold down a first team spot at Old Trafford in the face of stiff competition. Bassett has used his friendship with Sir Alex Ferguson to secure the player's services. Bassett acted as Manchester United's European scout prior to joining Barnsley.

United to get even better - Mc Claren Warning - Steve McClaren MANCHESTER United's number two Steve McClaren has issued a dire warning to the Reds' challengers: ``This team can only get better.'' Twelve months ago McClaren had just helped engineer a 1-1 draw for Derby County at Pride Park against United, three months later he was alongside Sir Alex Ferguson helping to steer the Reds to their historic treble. On the eve of his first return to Derby since his February departure, Rams' boss Jim Smith's former right-hand man looks back on his whirlwind 10 months of Old Trafford triumph. ``It has been hectic and all go since I left Pride Park. People keep saying to me you lucky so and so but I have not really had time to reflect,'' says Steve. ``There's no time to wallow in it. It is a case of getting on and winning the next trophies."
