Keane offered more elsewhere «« Roy Keane's agent has revealed the United skipper turned down an offer from abroad which bettered the deal he finally agreed to sign. The Irishman is owed £1.5 million in pay after his new four-year deal was back-dated to July 1 this year, a further reason why he may have turned down the riches from abroad. Michael Kennedy said it was the toughest deal he has ever done because of United's determination to keep to their wage structure which was eventually smashed, although Mark Bosnich's arrival had already stretched it. He said: "United made a fundamental mistake with Roy. They let it go on too long. I can understand why, because Roy had suffered a knee injury not many players fully recover from and they had to first see if he would come back as good as new. But by that time Roy only had a year left on his contract and that put him in a very strong position. "In the end they came up with the right deal, and it matched or bettered all but one of the offers from abroad." Keane's wages are reputed to be £50-52,000-a-week, which goes to show what the likes of Inter Milan or Juventus were prepared to fork out for a player the board must have been taking for granted. Why else then did they wait until the summer to begin talks? Keane knew there were high placed officials watching his every move to see if he came back properly, and Martin Edwards has admitted he was one of them. Perhaps if the suits had showed a bit of faith they could have saved a lot of money.

Taibi ready to play Massimo Taibi has returned from a spell of coaching from his old mentor in Italy ready to challenge for a first team place again. The big Sicilian headed back to Naples last week, with the permission of Alex Ferguson, to see Lorenzo di Iorio - the man who worked with him during his first spell at Venezia. Some reports incorrectly assumed the move meant Taibi was set to go to Napoli on loan but he has come back refreshed and confident of his chances of recovering his number one status. Taibi, showing a marked improvement in his English to MUTV, said: "Massimo is ready, if Ferguson wants him. I asked TC (Tony Coton) and coach Ferguson if I could go back to Naples last week because (I was ineligible for) the Valencia game and we had a free weekend. It was good for me and I am ready to play now. "(I) do not want to leave, my family is happy here and Massimo is ready to stay for four years. "There is a problem because (I) don't play but van der Gouw and Bosnich are very good keepers."

Bad news for two Scandinavians NEVLAND HEADS BACK TO NORWAY Manchester United have sold Norwegian striker Erik Nevland back to Viking Stavanger - the club he played for before moving to Old Trafford in 1997 for a fee in the region of £250,000. The 22-year-old only started one league game for the champions and his only goal came in a Worthington Cup tie against Bury last season. After being urged by Norway Under 21 coach Bjorn Hansen to find first team football, Nevland joined Swedish side IFK Gothenburg on loan in January and has now made a permanent move. BLOMQVIST RULED OUT UNTIL MARCH Manchester United winger Jesper Blomqvist has been ruled out until March after undergoing a second knee operation. The 25-year-old Swedish international, plagued by a mystery knee problem, has not played for United since taking part in the Champions Cup final in Barcelona last May. An operation in August was unsuccessful, and his hopes of playing again before new year have been dashed after he returned to Sweden for more surgery.

Since they're based on Merseydive, I waited to make sure they delivered before I recommended them but they're OK ;-)) Hope this helps a few of you - and I'm not on commission, honest! PS I couldn't see any instructions for overseas so they might not ship to other countries. PPS "You're on Sky Sports" is on in the other room and guess what they're going on about..."It's a disgrace that Man Yew (sic) are not in the FA Cup". Yawn. ======================= Paul Busby Manchester, England =======================

FOOTBALL: WENGER BLASTS ABSENT UNITED ARSENE WENGER aimed a stinging broadside at Manchester United's FA Cup boycott last night and told them: "You don't know what you're missing." The Arsenal manager accused the holders of "sending people the wrong message" by washing their hands of the trophy they lifted last May, as the Gunners muscled past brave Blackpool. Wenger was astonished that 34,000 fans turned out on a bitter evening at Highbury - confirmation that Arsenal fans crave Cup success as much as his players. And the Gunners boss said: "What United did wasn't right. The competition loses something when the holders do not turn up to defend the Cup. That is a shame because they are sending people the wrong message. "I have not found it strange to be playing the third round before Christmas, but it must have been odd for United - because they had nothing to do last weekend. "When I told the players before kick-off we had sold nearly 35,000 tickets for this game, I could see in their eyes how much they wanted to do well in the FA Cup again. "It shows how big this club is, and that the tradition of the Cup is still alive."
