"Save OUR Game!"
Subject: BBC Match Report - Newcastle 1-2 Man Utd Newcastle Utd 1-2 Manchester Utd Two goals from Andy Cole saw Manchester United to a victory over his old club which keeps them on track for an unprecedented treble. The England international struck with his 20th goal of the season after 25 minutes to cancel out Nolberto Solano's brilliant opener, and then added a second six minutes into the second half to clinch victory. With Chelsea losing at home for the first time this season, the win keeps Utd four points clear at the top of the Premiership. But it was a hard-fought win against an in-form Newcastle team in a scrappy game where referee David Elleray was frequently in action. Despite Wednesday night's trip to Milan, Alex Ferguson select a full-strength side, with Ryan Giggs, Dwight Yorke and Cole all in a formidable starting line-up. Newcastle boss Ruud Gullit handed a return to last Sunday's goal hero Temuri Ketsbaia, who resumed his partnership with skipper Shearer, just one strike away from 150 in the Premiership. Brilliant free kick Peruvian midfielder Solano came back, as did Greeks George Georgiadis and Nikos Dabizas. In an untidy start, neither team was able to exert any telling pressure. Newcastle made the break-through in the 15th minute through a brilliant free-kick from Peruvian Nolberto Solano. After Stam clattered into Dietmar Hamann 20 yards out, Solano curled a delicate right-foot shot over the defensive wall and past Schmeichel's despairing dive to see the ball go in off the post. Newcastle continued to press, and Warren Barton's long ball put Ketsbaia up against Stam on 22 minutes and the striker just got a touch only for Schmeichel to come from his line to mop up. Slack defending The visitors were starting to enjoy the better of the possession, and they were back on level terms with 25 minutes gone as they took advantage of some slack defending in the home penalty area. Henning Berg flicked on Neville's throw from the right and Yorke helped the ball towards goal before Cole pounced to score from close range. Shearer came close with his only two chances of the match, just failing to get above Didier Domi's 31st-minute cross to direct his header on goal, and then shooting well wide after Schmeichel mis-kicked a 36th-minute clearance. Newcastle had a let-off when Neville found space down the right but could not pick out either Cole or Yorke, and Keane tested Shay Given with a firmly-struck 20-yard effort. There was a surprise change at half time, with Man Utd keeper Schmeichel, apparently a flu victim, being replaced by Raimond van der Gouw - though he is still expected to play on Wednesday. Curling cross But the drama soon switched to the other end, as Giggs set up Cole for his second six minutes after the restart. The Welshman's curling cross enticed the keeper from his line, but the striker sneaked in before him to touch the ball into the open net. Despite having the bulk of the possession, Newcastle failed to put United's net under pressure, and van der Gouw did not have to make a serious save. Keane's experience came to the fore as the visitors gradually closed the game down, allowing the Magpies plenty of the ball but putting up the shutters at the back whenever they threatened. Newcastle:: Given, Barton, Charvet, Dabizas, Domi, Hamann, Solano, Speed, Georgiadis, Ketsbaia, Shearer. Subs: Harper, Lee, Maric, Saha, Griffin. Man Utd: Schmeichel, G. Neville, Berg, Stam, Irwin, Keane, Beckham, Scholes, Giggs, Cole, Yorke. Subs: Van Der Gouw, Johnsen, Solskjaer, P. Neville, Blomqvist. Referee: D Elleray (Harrow-on-the-Hill)
