Subject: BBC incl audio link "United sneak back to the top" Middlesbrough 0-1 Man Utd Manchester United moved back to the top of the Premiership, as Dwight Yorke scored on the stroke of half-time to secure a vital away victory over Middlesbrough. Steve McLaren: "We must win every game we've got left" http://news.bbc.co.uk/olmedia/335000/audio/_339441_mclaren.ram Alex Ferguson's men never found top form at the Riverside, but they were always in control of a strangely muted match and did enough to claim the three points. United have now moved ahead of Arsenal at the top of the table on goals scored as the Premiership title race enters its nerve-jangling final week. With Chelsea's challenge almost over, the other contenders have two matches left each, with Arsenal heading to Leeds on Tuesday and United visiting Blackburn the following day. The title will then be decided next Sunday, when United host Spurs and Aston Villa travel to Arsenal. Brian Deane battles for the ball with United's Gary Neville The decisive moment in a scrappy match came in first-half injury-time, Yorke netting from close range after Teddy Sheringham had headed the ball across the face of the goal. Boro were furious, arguing that both players had been in offside positions when the ball was played into the box. But it was no less than United deserved, having had a legitimate looking strike ruled out in debatable circumstances earlier in the half. Sheri starts United boss Alex Ferguson rested striker Andy Cole, with Sheringham handed the task of partnering Yorke, while David May came in for Ronny Johnsen at the back. Boro boss Bryan Robson fielded the side that started at Newcastle last week, with teenage defender Jason Gavin making his second senior appearance. Yorke is engulfed by his team-mates after scoring the winner But it was United who, unsurprisingly, made all the early running. And they thought they had taken the lead in the 14th minute. Boro keeper Mark Schwarzer was unable to hold a stinging long-range shot from Roy Keane and Sheringham followed up to slip the ball into the net. But for the second time in four days Ferguson's side fell foul of a dubious decision, as the effort was ruled out for offside - despite replays suggesting otherwise. Dwight Yorke then headed over the bar from a trademark David Beckham cross and Jesper Blomqvist was denied by a last-gasp Gary Pallister tackle. United captain Keane, who suffered an early knock to the ankle, was replaced by Nicky Butt as a precautionary measure with so many big league and cup games coming up. Boro hit back Boro had hardly troubled United in the opening 25 minutes - but they almost took an unlikely lead when Brian Deane headed a long-ball into the path of Mark Summerbell, who spun in the area and fired in a low shot that beat Peter Schmeichel but grazed the outside of the post. And Deane's aerial threat carved out another opening three minutes later but after he flicked on a long throw Dean Gordon scooped his shot high and wide. The proceedings had begun to take on a worrying air for United, with Boro looking increasingly dangerous - but Deane failed to find the target after Gordon's mistimed shot fell at his feet 12 yards out. United pushed on as the first-half drew to a close, and another concerted period of pressure brought the goal that at last settled the nerves of players and fans alike. United on top Sheringham continued to be at the centre of United's best moments and early in the second half he came close from Blomqvist's left-wing cross, Schwarzer saving at the near post before the ball was hacked away. Gary Neville then found himself in the opposition area - uncharted territory for the fullback - but his underhit shot posed no problem for Schwarzer. Heads you lose: Gary Pallister beats Teddy Sheringham to the ball But Boro were not ready to accept that the day belonged to United and May did well to halt Hamilton Ricard's storming run into the box. The game became even more disjointed, with United unable to find the fluency that has characterised so much of their play this season. The introduction of Cole for Blomqvist saw Yorke switched to the left flank and he began to make in-roads, Schwarzer shovelling away his angled shot after he cut in from the wing. With nine minutes to go Cole should have put the result out of sight but, with Schwarzer ahead of him, he sent his lob over the bar. Their were flutters in the United area in the dying moments, as Summerbell blasted over and Sheringham had to clear from under his own bar. Teams: Middlesbrough: Schwarzer, Stockdale, Vickers, Gavin, Pallister, Gordon, Mustoe, Summerbell, Townsend, Ricard, Deane. Subs: Beresford, Maddison, Campbell, Armstrong, Baker. Subject: Keane injury puts cloud over Utd win By John Richardson Monday, May 10, 1999 Roy Keane left the Riverside Stadium on crutches last night and with a major doubt hanging over his fitness for Manchester United's frenzied finish to their season. While Alex Ferguson's side crept back to the top of the Premiership thanks to Dwight Yorke's 29th goal of the season, the sight of their inspirational skipper limping off after just 25 minutes of yesterday's tense 1-0 win over Middlesbrough cast a dark cloud over United. The combative midfielder injured an ankle in a clash with Boro's Mark Summerbell in the fifth minute. He is already out of the Champions League Final against Bayern Munich through suspension and now the medical men are likely to have their work cut out to repair him in time for the remaining Premiership games against Blackburn and Tottenham. Steve McClaren, United's assistant manager, said: 'We won't know the full extent of the injury for 24 hours but it's a bit of a worry. He went off early and that was a concern.' The last player to leave a United game on crutches with ankle problems was winger Ryan Giggs following the dramatic FA Cup semi-final replay triumph over Arsenal - and he hasn't played since. At the ground where they clinched the 1996 title, United overtook champions Arsenal on goals scored with both teams level on points and goal-difference. The result means the Premiership will not be decided until the final day. Just over a fortnight earlier Arsenal had steamrollered Bryan Robson's side 6-1 but there was to be no repeat of that yesterday. It wasn't pretty and Boro skipper Andy Townsend heat-edly questioned the legality of Yorke's headed goal in first-half stoppage time. But McClaren said: 'We came here to do two jobs, to win the game and to score goals. We're pleased to be back on top - it's always nice to be up there. 'The players are counting down now. We have four games to go this season - two in the Premiership plus the FA Cup and Champions League finals. With the belief within the squad - the way they're playing for each other, the way they're working together - we are well capable of winning all four. 'Although it was very warm out on the pitch, our players were full of running. 'I think we controlled the game from the beginning, played some excellent football and worked very hard. We got the win and we're back on top. 'If we win the next two games in the league, I believe we will win the title.' Ferguson had sent his deputy to answer the questions just days after his own outburst following the 2-2 draw with Liverpool last week in which Denis Irwin was controversially sent off and Liverpool were awarded a disputed penalty before Paul Ince snatched the late equaliser. This time it appeared that United had received the benefit of the doubt over Yorke's winner, the striker coming back from an offside position. However, TV replays also showed that referee Graham Barber was wrong to disallow a Teddy Sheringham goal for offside. Viv Anderson, Boro's assistant manager, said: 'My first thoughts were that the Yorke goal was offside.' He said he felt the referee was right to disallow the Sheringham goal, however, adding: 'I haven't seen it on television so I can't comment. 'Having said all that, it was a great experience for some of the younger players out there against United. 'Seeing as I live in Manchester, I had better go with United for the title. I've said all along that the three away games at this stage of the season would be a real tester for United. 'They drew at Liverpool, have beaten us and now it's down to what they do at Blackburn.'

Subject: Boro - United TV report By Terry Well, a priceless win. We need goals as a cushion in case we finish level on points with Arsenal, but I think we would all have settled for a 1-0 win before the game. For a time, it looked as if the Curse of the Men in Black was going to continue as a perfectly good Teddy goal was disallowed on 14 minutes. Bloomers crossed to Keano just outside the area and he sent in a low hard shot. Teddy timed his run perfectly and as the keeper spilled the ball, Teddy raced in to score. But the linesman's flag was up. Replays showed clearly that Teddy started his run after Keano shot. I was foaming at the mouth with rage and frustration as another official screwed up our season. A goal at that point might have given on the impetus to score a bag full. But justice was done. In injury time at the end of the first half, Yorkie scored after being in an offside position. In fact, as Butty lobbed the ball into the area, it appeared that two or even three United players may have been offside. Teddy headed the ball across for Yorkie to head it in. It doesn't make up for the draw against Elleray's Heroes on Wednesday, but it's comforting to know we too can get a bit of luck occasionally (very occasionally). On the balance of play, and because a 'good' goal had been disallowed, I felt we were just worth the narrow lead. We'd had a couple of chances, notably Yorkie's flicked header after Becks's chip, but Boro also came close a couple of times, the clearest chance being when they hit the post. A big blow had been the loss of Keano on 25 minutes. Whenever I see Butty battling alone in midfield without Keano, I start hyperventilating, but that's what we're going to get in the EC final. There won't even be Scholesie alongside him. Butty works his socks off for the cause, and now and again he makes a strong contribution, but, generally, when we're attacking and Nicky gets the ball, I expect the move to break down. He fought hard again today but he can be exasperating. A couple of minutes after Keano went off, he was seen with an ice pack on his foot. Let's pray he'll be ready for the Ravers on Wednesday. We started the second half quite sharp and had a shot from Teddy cleared off the line. The goalkeeper, for the 300th time in the match, spilled the ball but there was no-one following up as Teddy had done earlier for the disallowed goal. There was another scare on 55 minutes when Schmikes appeared to have been caught by Ricard's studs, but he was able to continue. No card there for Ricard. Not even a foul. That seemed about par for the course as any challenge by United was penalised. We'd got a good idea of things to come as early as the 5th minute. Keano was taken down from behind by a two-footed challenge but there was no card for the Boro man. Precisely 60 seconds later, Scholesie did something very similar ... and out comes the card. Teddy and Gazza Neville were also booked. It looked as if Boro players would have to attempt murder to get a caution while United merely needed to sneeze in the general direction of a red shirt to have the referee reach into his pocket. The camera occasionally crossed over to Fergie, and he was usually shaking his head in mild disbelief that we hadn't got a tighter grip on the game. At one point, the camera just kept getting closer and closer. I was expecting his glasses to crack as the zoom smacked into them. Poor old Fergie. The bags under his eyes are enormous. Big enough for three trophies perhaps? I thought it was a very bold move of the Wizard to bring on Cole for Bloomers after 65 minutes. Bloomers may have had a patchy 65 minutes but his defensive contribution is fair. Fergie obviously didn't rate Boro's attack but thought that, from our point of view, attack was better than defence. And, generally, it worked. We looked a lot sharper with Andy Cole on. Suddenly, there was a lot more movement up front, we started buzzing again with Yorkie, Cole and Teddy starting to find some space in attack. Meanwhile, back at the Schmeichel ranch, everything was pretty well under control. On 75 minutes Yorkie had a good chance to make the game safe but chose to shoot rather than pass the ball right where Andy Cole was waiting. Five minutes later, following a superb move of breathtaking simplicity, Andy Cole was through and should have scored. He chose to lob the ball over Schwarzer's head but it bounced (the ball, not Schwarzer's head) on the crossbar. I cursed, as it meant another 10 minutes of tension and mental anguish. And tension there was aplenty. As we approached extra time, Superstar miskicked and sent the ball out for a corner. Teddy cleared that for another one. The fourth official held up '3 minutes' which was going to feel more like 30. In the event, the ref played over 4 additional minutes (what would Fergie have said if Boro had equalised in the 4th?!) but we made it. The tension drained away and I collapsed in a heap on the floor a quivering jelly. I wish I'd got interested in tiddywinks rather than football. We worked hard for the result and deserved it. Boro did their bit. They didn't lie down and let themsleves be ravished (perhaps not the right analogy there) but they didn't kill themselves with effort either. With nothing to play for, I suppose they were content to make a game of it. The big question now is: will Leeds, who also have nothing to play for, be taking it easy against the Arse or will Arsenal old boy O'Leary be firing them up to 'beat the champions'? It's anybody's guess. It's going to be very very close. ________________ Terry Saudi

Subject: Boro 0-1 Man Utd: United rescued by lucky charm By Graham Hunter Monday, May 10, 1999 Manchester United showed yesterday that the spirit is strong but the flesh is weakening and the nerves jangling as they clawed their way to the top of the Premiership table. Whereas Arsenal had thrashed Middlesbrough to within an inch of their dignity only a fortnight ago, United were forced to defend a 1-0 lead, Gunners-style, and did not look as if they enjoyed doing it. Already without Ronny Johnsen, Henning Berg and Ryan Giggs, United watched with a deepening sense of gloom as Roy Keane limped off after only 25 minutes and Peter Schmeichel went down under a heavy tackle from Hamilton Ricard. The undeniable impression is that United are digging cavernously deep into every last reserve they possess - mental and physical - in their glorious chase for three trophies. Injuries are mounting and dubious refereeing decisions seem to rain down upon them. But they are not on their knees yet. It was just as well yesterday because chances galore went begging before Dwight Yorke, their lucky charm from Tobago, took care of business for them. If there had been any lingering suspicion from Arsenal that Bryan Robson's Middlesbrough might offer a pallid test for the team he used to captain, they were soon dispelled. Compared to their inept, paper-thin display against Arsene Wenger's Arsenal two weeks ago, when they lost 6-1, Middlesbrough played like Brazil's 1970 World Cupwinners yesterday. That is a compliment only in the context of how poorly they played against Arsenal. Yesterday Middlesbrough tried to make amends. It is ironic that this is the Robson prototype which will avoid relegation - which remains the only team to defeat United at Old Trafford this season - compared to the talented Middlesbrough side who went down two years ago. Safe they may be, but there are massive improvements still to make in almost every department, which is why Robson reverted to a five-man defence and used the energetic Mark Summerbell in midfield. At 22 and starting only his 24th first-team match, it could have been a horrible own-goal for manager and player against United's fire-breathing midfield. Yet for most of the afternoon he was the player Robson had most to be proud of and, unfortunately for United, it was his tackle on Keane which led to the Irishman's early departure. Nicky Butt came on for Keane, which must have given United manager Alex Ferguson palpitations. Butt is crucial to United's Champions League Final given that both Keane and Paul Scholes are suspended. Let there be no doubt that Butt will be wrapped in cotton wool until the date with Bayern Munich in Barcelona on May 26. Summerbell's more positive contribution was when he skipped between Jaap Stam and David May in the 27th minute to collect Deane ' s flick from Andy Townsend's free kick and shaved a drive off the post. Unfortunately for Summerbell, his gallant efforts were matched by Dean Gordon's wild shooting in front of goal and a performance by Mark Schwarzer which made it seem as if he had smeared his gloves in bacon fat. It was from the goalkeeper's most embarrassing fumble that referee Graham Barber and his assistant wrongly deprived Teddy Sheringham of an opening goal. After a weekend which saw United chairman Martin Edwards savaging another referee, David Elleray, for his performance in the 2-2 draw at Anfield, it was a shame that Barber added fuel to the fire. United's crisp crossfield move-ment after quarter of an hour ended with a one-two between Jesper Blomqvist and Keane, followed by a firm shot by Butt which Schwarzer spilled. Sheringham galloped in to score with consummate anticipation but the officials were an inch or two off the pace. So were Middlesbrough for large swathes of the match but they clung on tenaciously. They denied United the chance to build a decent goal-difference at the top of the table. If Sheringham's effort had not been disallowed, then Yorke's 45th-minute winner would surely have opened the floodgates. When the goal came, though, it appeared even more dubious. Seconds before half-time, Schwarzer punched David Beck-ham's free kick to Butt who was 40 yards out. Instead of answering the United fans who roared 'shoot', Butt lobbed into the box. Yorke was running back onside and it was the narrowest of decisions but this time the officials did not interfere. Sheringham cushioned a header to Yorke, who collected his 29th goal this season. Ignored by his fellow professionals and by the football writers as player of the season, the irrepressible little character is already close to being the signing of Ferguson's career. If anyone else in a white shirt had showed the same nerve in the second half, then United would have won by three or four goals. Blomqvist is developing a nervous tic every time a team-mate gives him an inviting pass near goal. Andy Cole replaced him and was unfortunate to see his lob bounce off the bar in the last 10 minutes. Schwarzer's redemption for all the jittery little errors came first when he reacted instinctively to Sheringham's subtle flick in the 49th minute from Blomqvist's shot and then, with a quarter of an hour left, when he threw himself full length and coped with a horrible bounce to deny Yorke. The bounce was as uneven as Schwarzer's performance but that may yet deprive United of the goal-difference they need to win the title.

Subject: PEMIERSHIP PENDULUM SWINGS AGAIN Yorke Goal Gives United Title Edge MIDDLESBROUGH 0 MANCHESTER UNITED 1 On the ground where they won the title three years ago, United yesterday took a huge step towards lifting the 1999 Premiership crown. The men from Old Trafford have wrested the initiative back from Arsenal and have returned to the top of the league with just two games remaining. Alex Ferguson's Treble-chasers lead the champions on goals scored and would appear to have the easier finish. United face Brian Kidd's hapless, white-flag-waving Blackburn at Ewood Park on Wednesday, which should provide them with the chance to improve their goal difference, before they entertain Tottenham on Sunday. By contrast, the defending champions face a testing trip to Leeds tomorrow (Tuesday) before they complete their campaign against Aston Villa at Highbury. Boro boss Bryan Robson had hoped to be the second United old boy, after Liverpool's Paul Ince on Wednesday, to throw a spanner into the Red Devils' championship charge. The Teessiders had reason to be optimistic, they had only lost two league games at the Riverside Stadium before yesterday, while they were the last team to beat United, 28 games ago at Old Trafford. But they could not stand in the way of the Manchester outfit, who deserved to win by more than just Dwight Yorke's 29th goal of the season. The game spluttered briefly into life after 15 minutes when Teddy Sheringham, recalled in place of Andy Cole, knocked the ball home after Mark Schwarzer had spilled Roy Keane's shot. The celebrations were cut short by the assistant referee, who was signalling for offside even though the former Tottenham striker had appeared to be onside. Yorke then directed a header just over from David Beckham's cross as United began to look menacing. They could not maintain this momentum and, on 25 minutes, they were forced to re-organise in midfield when Keane was replaced by Nicky Butt after the Irishman had been clattered by Mark Summerbell in the fifth minute. Boro went close to an opener when Brian Deane knocked on Andy Townsend's free-kick to Summerbell, whose shot grazed the post. Dean Gordon then fluffed a good chance at the back post before Deane scuffed his shot after he had been found by Gordon. United stepped up the pressure towards half-time and Schwarzer saved from Beckham after the impressive Jesper Blomqvist had found him unmarked at the back post. Then, a minute into stoppage time, Fergie's side made the breakthrough. Butt played the ball into Sheringham, who nodded it across goal for Yorke to head home from close range. The furious Middlesbrough players felt Sheringham was offside and protested to referee Graham Barber, who booked Townsend for dissent. United almost had a second six minutes after the interval when Schwarzer parried Sheringham's flick and David May, playing in the centre of defence in place of Ronny Johnsen, couldn't net the loose ball. The Australian keeper was suddenly fumbling everything and was lucky there was no white shirt following up when he spilled a drive from Paul Scholes. Middlesbrough, who swapped Steve Baker for Robbie Stockdale at half-time, pressed for an equaliser and Gordon wasted a glorious chance when he failed to connect properly with Townsend's cross. At the other end, Schwarzer continued to cause palpitations among the home fans with his goalkeeping as he dived on a Gary Neville shot that he had failed to hold first time. The game was opening up now after a largely disappointing first half and Butt fired over before May made a great tackle on the twisting and turning Hamilton Ricard in the United area. Manchester United increased their firepower when, with just over a quarter of the match remaining, they brought Cole on for Blomqvist and pushed Yorke out to the left. The Caribbean star was determined not to be sidelined from the action and he cut in from his spot on the left flank to force a decent save from Schwarzer at the expense of a corner. United could and should have had a second and Cole kicked an advertising board in frustration after his lob beat Schwarzer but not the crossbar. The Boro fans' sense of injustice was heightened when, in their opinion, May got away with a foul on substitute Andy Campbell as he ran through on goal. Barber did not agree and, after the events at Anfield in midweek, that's one refereeing decision Ferguson will agree with.
