Team (from): Van der Gouw, Brown, Stam, Berg, Irwin,
Giggs, Blomqvist, Keane, Butt, Cole, Yorke, Sheringham, P
Neville, Cruyff, Solskjaer, G Neville, Beckham, Johnsen,
Colkin.
Alex Ferguson has hinted that he may keep faith with the side which started
the FA Cup tie against Middlesbrough for this Sunday's visit of West Ham
United - and that could mean bad news for both David Beckham and Gary Neville.
The England duo were both suspended last weekend after totting up five
bookings apiece, and now they may find it hard to dislodge Jesper Blomqvist
and Wes Brown respectively.
Ferguson looks certain to start with Ryan Giggs, Roy Keane, Nicky Butt and
Jesper Blomqvist in midfield while competition for places up front and in
defence reaches fever pitch also.
Ronny Johnsen is another who looks like missing out. He had flu last
weekend and lost his place to Norwegian international team-mate Henning
Berg, who gave a good performance against Jaap Stam.
If Ferguson sticks to his game-plan the battle for places will switch to
the bench.
With rookie 'keeper Nick Culkin taking one seat as Raimond van der Gouw
steps up to replace Caribbean-holidaying goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel.
David Beckham, Gary Neville and Ronny Johnsen will be competing with last
week's bench of Teddy Sheringham, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Phil Neville and
Jordi Cruyff.
Going into the game, Ferguson said: "You cannot ignore a performance like
that put on against Middlesbrough last Sunday. "They handled the match
brilliantly and you cannot ignore a performance like that."
--------------------------------
UNITED STARS FIGHT FOR PLACES
The battle for places at Old Trafford switches to the
substitutes' bench on Sunday as Manchester United face
West Ham in their opening Premiership game of the new
year.
With Alex Ferguson planning to stick as closely as possible
to last weekend's winning FA Cup line-up, the bench will be
overflowing with talent as seven internationals fight for the
four vacant places.
Ferguson has already announced one change for the game
with goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel taking a winter break in
the Bahamas and Raimond van der Gouw stepping up to
replace him.
Rookie keeper Nick Colkin should take one of the
substitutes' places and with David Beckham and Gary Neville
back from a one-match suspension and Ronny Johnsen fit
again after flu someone will have to make way if they are to
be involved.
They will find the competition tough with last week's subs
Teddy Sheringham, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Phil Neville and
Jordi Cruyff all in contention.

Subject: Reds to break bank for Zidane?
United face £20m bill if they want to sign Zidane
Friday, January 8, 1999
Alex Ferguson will be forced to pay a world record transfer fee of at least
£20million if he decides to bid for
Zinedine Zidane. The Manchester United manager was last night given the
first indication of the massive price Juventus will put on the
Frenchman rated by many as the best player in the world. Ferguson's
brother, Martin, watched Zidane this week against AC Milan. The Old
Trafford scout and No.1 headhunter went to Italy on Wednesday, first to
watch Inter, who currently employ the world's most expensive player
Ronaldo, lose 1-0 away to Parma. United will have representatives at every
one of their Champions League quarter-final opponents' games until the
teams meet in March.
Then he took in Juventus' clash with Milan in the Stadio Meazza at San Siro
in the evening. While part of his mission was to gather more information on
his club's potential opponents in either the semi-final or final of the
Champions League, his other brief was to analyse Zidane's possible impact
at United.
One of Ferguson's game plans to lure Zidane to the Premiership centres
around Juventus coach Marcello Lippi, who has said he intends to leave at
the season's end. The Scotsman is hoping that Lippi's departure - he is
tipped to take over at Inter - may offer United their best opportunity of
capturing the World Cup winner.
United hope that Lippi's departure may unsettle Zidane, who has hinted that
while he is happy playing in Serie A, he may one day like to sample English
football as fellow countrymen Patrick Vieira and Emmanuel Petit are doing
so successfully with Arsenal.
But a Juventus spokesman made it clear last night that he expected any
attempt to seize the services of the player Ferguson could have bought in
1996 for less than £2m from Bordeaux would be met by the biggest asking
price ever.
The spokesman added: 'We have heard of United's interest in Zidane but, if
they wanted to sign him, it would take at least £20m, perhaps even more.
'The club still see Zidane as playing a major role next season and he is
contracted with us until 2002. But in football these days anything is
possible - and everyone has their price.'
More............
There's today renewed speculation that Alex Ferguson is set to make a move
for the player who has eluded him for the best part of three seasons -
Zinedine Zidane.
The news follows Juventus slapping a staggering £20m price tag on the
maverick Frenchman's head.
Ferguson has made no secret of his desire to land the World Cup-winning
superstar and recently sent his brother Martin to watch the much
sought-after midfielder in action for Juventus against AC Milan, putting
the Turin club on full alert.
The 26-year old is under contract until the summer of 2002 but with rumours
of a mass exodus on the cards when coach Marcello Lippi leaves at the end
of the season escalating, United may decide to take advantage of the unrest.
A Juventus spokesman said: "We have heard of United's interest in Zidane
but, if they wanted to sign him, it would take at least £20m, perhaps even
more.
"But in football these days anything is possible - and everyone has their
price."
Whether the Old Trafford hierarchy would be prepared to break the bank for
Zidane, however, is once again debatable.

Subject: Fergie stirs keeper nest!!
Alex Ferguson has evidently stirred up a hornets' nest by deciding to give
Peter Schmeichel a mid-season break.
The United boss told the Great Dane to have a week off and Schmeichel
obliged by heading for the Bahamas. Schmeichel will not be involved in
Sunday's clash with West Ham, but rumour has it that Ferguson was ready to
leave him out after a string of indifferent performances in recent weeks.
There are those close to the club who feel Schmeichel's performances have
been affected by a long-standing back problem, and a break in the sun will
hopefully do him the world of good.
In the meantime, the guessing game continues as to who Ferguson will make a
move for in the wake of Schmeichel's decision to quit the English game.
Edwin van der Sar of Ajax, Middlesbrough's Mark Schwarzer and Parma's
21-year old 'keeper Gianluigi Buffon have all been mentioned but Ferguson
has yet to go public with his transfer target.

Subject: United undeterred by £12m Parma demand for Buffon
Saturday, January 9, 1999
Alex Ferguson will have to shatter the world transfer record for a goalkeeper if
he wants to make Parma's Gianluigi Buffon the successor to Peter Schmeichel.
Manchester United have been quoted £12million for Buffon, 20.
Buffon is considered certain to become one of Italy's finest - a judgment which
means he is coveted by other Serie A clubs. But, with Schmeichel saying he
will quit the Premiership in the summer, it is believed Ferguson was not put off
by Parma's reaction.
Ferguson's dossier on the keeper, who made his international debut at 19, was
updated this week. United's boss sent brother Martin on a multiple spying trip.
Parma's 1-0 win over Inter offered an opportunity to study not only Buffon but
also Inter, United's Champions League quarter-final rivals.
He also watched Zinedine Zidane in Juventus' 1-1 draw with Milan. United have
other goalkeeping targets in mind, including Edwin van der Sar, of Ajax, and AZ
Alkmaar's Oscar Moens.
The world record fee for a goalkeeper is the £7.5m Inter paid Sampdoria for
Gianluca Pagliuca.

Subject: MEN EXCLUSIVE - THREE CLUBS IN MERGER FOR MILLENNIUM SENSATION
By Paul Hince and Pete Spencer
THREE Greater Manchester soccer clubs are considering a merger for the
millennium, it can be revealed today.
Bury, Oldham Athletic and Rochdale have opened secret negotiations to
become one club - and even a name such
as Manchester North End has been considered.
Behind the sensational plan is Oldham's influential chairman Ian Stott who
today announced he wants to become
the new chairman of the Football Association.
The new club would have an ?11m, state-of-the-art 16,000-seat stadium as
its headquarters built on land adjoining
Oldham's existing Boundary Park close to the motorway network.
A merger of the long-established clubs, who have all been struggling
financially through falling gates, would rock
English soccer.
Today's revelation that hush, hush talks have taken place will spark a
fans' backlash but Stott is adamant that the plan
is the ONLY way supporters of the three rival clubs will have a
full-fledged pro club to back in the next century.
All three are fighting a battle against falling gates and rising costs.
Although in different divisions they have all suffered
by the distribution of TV cash that greatly favours Premiership clubs.
The average attendances at home matches for both Oldham and Bury has dipped
to below 5,000 while Rochdale are
lucky to command half that figure.
And in all three cases, the turnstile receipts alone come nowhere near to
covering the increasing costs of running a
full-time professional soccer club.
Senior officials at the three clubs whose grounds are all within ten miles
of each other believe that a merger would
establish a trend which other small clubs nationwide will have to follow -
or face the prospect of folding.
Stott told M.E.N. Sport: ``A merger with Bury and Rochdale is something I
am given serious consideration to. I have
already discussed the possibility of the three clubs merging into one with
my Bury and Rochdale counterparts
Terry Robinson and David Kilpatrick and, like me, they can see the
long-term benefits of such a venture.
``Obviously there would be some horrendous problems if the merger goes
ahead. There will be hard-core fans
from all three clubs who would be violently opposed to the idea.''
Stott added: ``There will be other major problems chairman. but over-riding
all of those is the question of survival
for professional soccer in this region.''
Oldham Council is already backing the ambitious plan to build the new
stadium behind Boundary Park.
One stumbling block is that under existing Football League rules a new
merged club would take the place
of the club in the lowest division - that is Rochdale in the third.
But Football League director and Bury chairman Robinson, who confirmed
talks have taken place, revealed if the
league structure changes the new club could be invited to play in a
Premiership Two.
He said: ``The idea is revolutionary and Ian is right when he says there
would not be total support from traditional fans.
It may be the future of football. Time will tell.''
Kilpatrick said: ``The three of us were until recently on the Football
League board and have obviously talked
about all kinds of possibilities. The fans would find this plan hard to
accept and their views are paramount.''
