Subject: Manchester United boss scores 41-million pound winner LONDON, Oct 6 (Reuters) - Manchester United boss Martin Edwards was around 41 million pounds ($67.9 million) richer on Wednesday after selling a 7.5 percent chunk of the club, stock market sources said. In a move that may ease Edwards towards the position of Chairman of Manchester United rather than Chief Executive, Edwards sold 19.5 million shares to cut his stake to 6.5 percent. Sources said the shares in the world's richest soccer club had been sold at a price of 210p each. In July, Britain's Daily Mail said the Sultan of Brunei, one of the world's richest men, was reported to be seeking to buy Edwards's stake. A wealthy Anglo-Irish group of racehorse owners was also said to be interested. A chairman normally plays a more ``hands off'' role and a large shareholding could conflict with the duties of that position. The Edwards family has run the club since the 1960s and Edwards has played a key role since 1980 when he took over the running from his late father Louis Edwards. United achieved an unprecedented treble last season, winning the premier league, the F.A. Cup and the European Cup. Edwards came under fire from a vocal group of United supporters last year when the board agreed to sell the club to Rupert Murdoch pay TV company BSkyB. But the deal was blocked by the British government on competition grounds.

Subject: Taibi speaks.... ARTICLE FROM SPORTING LIFE.... TAIBI - I AM NOT TO BLAME Massimo Taibi has continued to make excuses for his horrendous start to his English career as Mark Bosnich prepared to take over as Manchester United keeper. Bosnich, axed in favour of pounds 4.5million Taibi, looks set to replace the calamity keeper when United visit his old club Aston Villa in the Worthington Cup next week. Insiders claim Ferguson has finally run out of patience with his Italian import. But Taibi remained defiant yesterday despite a series of clangers likely to see him go down in legend. Taibi said: "I'm not affected by the criticism. I don't believe my form over the four matches has been that bad. "I was man of the match in my debut at Liverpool and played well against Wimbledon. And against Southampton I had a problem with my studs. "At Chelsea I was at fault for the first goal but you can't blame me for the next four. "People have to realise I am adjusting to a league vastly different to Italy. "In Italy the build-up is much slower. Here you have to concentrate that much more but it's something I'm adjusting to. "The language barrier has also been a factor and it's not helped me that I'm not playing for United in the Champions League fixtures. If I had played in every game I probably would already have overcome the problems I am having." Despite his wide-ranging list of excuses, Taibi has been drastically at fault for goals in three of his four games. And that is why Bosnich will be given the chance to resurrect his United career, starting next week.

Subject: GOOD TIMES FOR PALMEIRAS Tuesday, October 05, 1999 10:52 United will face Brazilians Palmeiras in the Intercontinental Cup in Tokyo in November. As we continue our spying mission on the South Americans, we find them in good form, and pulling off a United trick, coming back from two goals down to win a match! Flavio Nehrer is our man in Brazil. "Up, up and away!. Palmeiras had another tremendous week, getting four points out of a possible six, taking seventh position in the Brazilian championship. Last Wednesday, Palmeiras recovered from a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2 over former national coach Mario Zagallo’s Portuguesa de Desportos. On Sunday, Palmeiras and Sao Paulo drew 0-0. The club now have 23 points from 14 matches. Corinthians, top of the Brazilian table, have 28 points. In the match against Portuguesa, Palmeiras started badly: after just 11 minutes, Portuguesa had a two-goal advantage. In the 22nd minute, though, Cesar Sampaio scored a header from a difficult position. Mario Zagallo, coach of Portuguesa at the match, protested in vain (Zagallo was sacked on Monday after his team lost to Corinthians). Two minutes later, Paulo “Devil Blonde” Nunes dribbled past the keeper to equalise. He’s the team's top scorer in the Brazilian tournament, with six goals. Portuguesa still had chances to win the match, but it was Palmeiras who did it. In the 67th minute, Zinho, with a free kick, scored the all-important goal: Palmeiras won 3-2. In the Sunday match, goalkeepers Marcos (Palmeiras) and Rogerio Ceni (Sao Paulo) were responsible for the 0-0 draw, with three to four saves each. The match was played in very cool temperature, with some players even wearing gloves. This will be a quiet week for the club. On Wednesday, Palmeiras will play Cruzeiro for the Mercosur Cup. With 11 points in 5 matches, Palmeiras will qualify for the second round of the tournament with any result against Cruzeiro. Palmeiras are the current holders of the Mercosur Cup. Over the weekend, there will be no match for Palmeiras at the Brazilian championship. Players Marcos and Roque Junior will be away with the National Team for the Holland match on Saturday 9. The good news is that Junior Baiano and Cleber, who were operated on last August, trained again on October 1. Junior Baiano, who suffered knee injuries after the training practice, is still not confirmed for the Palmeiras-Manchester United match." Many thanks to Flavio.
