MANCHESTER UNITED defender Denis Irwin is in line for a
money-spinning testimonial at Manchester United after he agreed a
new one-year contract with the club. Irwin, whose old deal expired
in the summer, put pen to paper today after two months of
negotiations with the Old Trafford outfit. ''It's a great deal for me
and I hope the club feel the same,'' beamed Irwin, who joined
United from Oldham in June 1990. ''I didn't start talking to the
chairman until the end of November because I wanted to make sure
I was still in the team. People are already talking about a
testimonial, but I'm not yet looking that far ahead."

Thursday 04 February 1999 Subject: UNITED GO FOUR POINTS CLEAR Giggs Limps Out As Yorke Tames Stubborn Rams MANCHESTER UNITED 1 DERBY 0 Dwight Yorke maintained his red-hot scoring streak to settle Manchester United's nerves and take them four points clear at the top of the Premiership. For nearly three quarters of this rearranged match at Old Trafford, Derby kept United at bay. The visitors' well-organised defence had valiantly frustrated United with Russell Hoult outstanding in goal. But the Reds were not prepared to let the Rams pull the wool over their eyes and dent their 100 per cent record in 1999 with their stubborn resistance. They kept going, just like they had against Liverpool and Charlton in their last two games, until they got their reward. The breakthrough came from the trusty boot of Yorke, and his 19th strike of the season has put some daylight between United and the chasing trio of Chelsea, Aston Villa and Arsenal. It was also his seventh strike in only five games. Yorke was without Andy Cole alongside him because - ironically on the day the striker won his place back in the England squad - he found himself sitting on the bench. United boss Alex Ferguson had decided Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had waited long enough for his chance to impress from the start. Back also came Ronny Johnsen in place of the injured Henning Berg and Paul Scholes for David Beckham. Despite Solskjaer's inclusion, it said it all about United's cutting edge in the first half that Jaap Stam was their most potent attacker. He stung Hoult's hands with a 30-yard drive following a surging run from defence. Stam scored his first United goal last month at Leicester and was clearly intent on adding to that tally - he unleashed another ferocious effort shortly afterwards, which flew just past Hoult's far post. The world's most expensive defender also proved he was dangerous in the air when he headed over from a corner. In between the intervals in the Jaap Stam show, Ryan Giggs limped off injured after 10 minutes with a suspected hamstring strain to be replaced by Jesper Blomqvist. Hoult pressed his claims to become Derby's regular between the posts in the absence of the injured Mart Poom with a stirring display. He produced a fine reflex save to touch the ball over the bar after Scholes' effort rebounded off Spencer Prior. United were hardly troubled at the back, but midway through the half they were nearly caught out when Paulo Wanchope, back after suspension, evaded Gary Neville and Stam to shoot into the side-netting. At the other end Prior made a great challenge to stop Yorke in the box as he pulled the trigger, while Roy Keane fired wide from long range. Referee Steve Lodge was letting too many tackles from behind go unpunished and Igor Stimac clattered Yorke in one such challenge, although he eventually picked himself up and carried on. The officials had a night to forget in general and Kevin Harper was wrongly pulled back for offside when he was clean through. Instead, though, it was United who were becoming increasingly frustrated as they laboured in vain to find a way past Derby's central defensive trio of Prior, Stimac and Jacob Laursen. Solskjaer did find the back of the net, but the Norwegian's effort was disallowed for offside. Then just as Ferguson was about to bring on Cole, United made the breakthrough on 65 minutes. For once the Rams defence was nowhere to be seen as Nicky Butt found Yorke unmarked in the box and he controlled the ball beautifully before beating Hoult. Yorke's goal ignited United and Keane drove wide before Hoult made a terrific save with his feet to leave Solskjaer holding his head in his hands. Hoult was determined not to be beaten again and he made another fine stop to deny Yorke from Blomqvist's teasing cross. Derby brought on Deon Burton and Jonathan Hunt in a desperate attempt to retrieve a point, but there was never going to be any chance of that happening against this United side.

Subject: Giggs may miss Inter clash Giggs may miss Inter clash MANCHESTER, England, Feb 3 - Manchester United winger Ryan Giggs could miss the European Cup quarter-final clash with Inter Milan in March after damaging a hamstring in a 1-0 win over Derby County in the English premier league on Wednesday. Welsh international Giggs pulled up after only 10 minutes, holding his leg, and limped to the dressing-room before Dwight Yorke scored the winner in the 65th minute. United manager Alex Ferguson said: "He's got a hamstring injury. It makes him very doubtful for the Milan game. He pulled his hamstring against Derby last year also, which cost him a quarter-final place (against Monaco). It kept him out for seven weeks."

From: Mark Armstrong Subject: Reserves Vs Birmingham (Report) The futures bright ....... Away to Birmingham Team Culkin, Curtis, Brown, Mulryne Clegg (Captain), Rose, Wilson, Chadwick, Greening, Healey, Nevland Three players were making their first full start for the reserve team tonight Rose, Healey and Chadwick. Chadwick who came on for the last week for 20 mins against Derby and made an immediate impact was also celebrating his call up to the U18 England squad. It was also Tony Coton's first match in charge of the Reserve team. In a scrappy first half which was not helped by strong winds and a pitch more like Old Trafford in the 70's there was hardly a shot on target. Chadwick started on the RHS this week and after 16 mins picked the ball up just inside the United half and made a lovely solo run up the middle of the pitch, laid it off to the right for Nevland, who's second touch let him down, he pushed the ball to far in front and had his shot blocked. Unfortunately it was not to be Erik Nevland's night his final touch constantly let him down it might have been the fact that he was off to Gothenburg Saturday to start his loan spell. 2nd half United kick off with the wind behind them, Chadwick is switched over to the LHS, but it starts off all Birmingham, who take the lead on 48 mins through Johnson. A ball through the middle leave Rose completely exposed, Johnson takes the ball wide to the right and slides it past the on rushing Culkin. The next few minutes see Birmingham threaten the goal a number of times but fail to trouble the keeper. 15mins into the second half United start to threaten the Birmingham goal, a lovely 1 2 leaves Healey free on the edge of the area and he hits a cracking shot which is saved by the keeper. A few minutes later Chadwick receives the ball on the LHS just outside the area skips past a couple of tackles and hits a fine right footed shot which the keeper can only parry out to the on rushing Wilson who shoots wide. After 75 mins Chadwick is fouled just outside the area on the left corner Wilson takes the free kick from about 25yds and puts it inches over the cross bar. By now the chances were coming thick and fast with end to end football both teams creating chances but not finding the net. On 78 mins United draw level, Healey gets his first goal for the reserves, an excellent pass from Mulryne finds Healey on the edge of the D, who takes one touch to set himself up and with his second curves it round the diving keeper into the net. With 6 mins left to go the ball gets passed back to Culkin who swings at the ball but completely miss kicks it, the on rushing Birmingham player cannot believe his luck and races Culkin to the ball, who produces a clumsy challenge in the area bringing him down for a penalty, and also gets booked. But he makes amends with an excellent save from the penalty, he pushes the shot wide, but then promptly decides to do a dance in the area unaware for 3 or 4 seconds that the ball is still in play, luckily his defenders were, and managed to clear the ball. The look on his face when it dawned on him that the ball was on its way back in the area was a peach. With only a few minutes to go Chadwick loops a cross in from the left for Healey to head but a great save from the keeper who at full stretch tips it over the bar. United could have also had a penalty when Chadwick was brought down, but all he got was a yellow card for arguing with the ref. Full time 1-1, which leaves them in second place in the Pontins league. A fair result, but Birmingham fielded 8 players who have played for the first team, they created plenty of opportunities but failed to trouble Nick Culkin. United on the other hand could have had at least 2 more goals but for the brilliance of Ian Bennett the Birmingham keeper who was Man of the Match. Our man of the match was again Luke Chadwick, had three good shots on target, he loves to take people on, and seems to pop up all over the field. You want him to get the ball because the excitement he generates when he receives it was like when we first saw Giggs playing. I hope its not long before you all have the opportunity to see him for yourself. The next match is Monday, Preston NE. Mark Armstrong.

Subject: UNITED WIN MARRED BY GIGGS INJURY Dwight Yorke maintained his red-hot scoring streak to settle Manchester United's nerves and take them four points clear at the top of the Premiership with a 1-0 win over Derby - but the victory was overshadowed by an injury to Ryan Giggs. United believe they've almost certainly lost Giggs for the Champions' League quarter-final after he came off with a hamstring injury. Giggs has struggled with a string of similar injuries for the past couple of seasons, and boss Alex Ferguson believes he will now miss the first leg of the clash with Inter Milan on March 3. The irony is that in a match with Derby last season he damaged the same hamstring, and that ruled him out of the Champions' League quarter-final with Monaco. Ferguson said: "Ryan has done his hamstring again. Those injuries can take several weeks, particularly in his case. He must now be very doubtful for the Milan game. "It's amazing that the same thing happened last season and against the same opponents at this time of year. "Ryan has tweaked the same injury again, we won't really know until tomorrow, but he's already under treatment with ice packs." It was a bitter sweet night for United, who had persuaded Derby to move this fixture from Easter Monday to ease end-of-season fixture congestion. For nearly three quarters of this rearranged match at Old Trafford, the visitors kept United at bay. Their well-organised defence had valiantly frustrated United with Russell Hoult outstanding in goal. Subject: Yorke fires United Soccernet Manchester Utd 1-0 Derby By John Richardson Thursday, February 4, 1999 Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson surprisingly split up the Calypso Kids - Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole - as his team looked to place considerable daylight between themselves and the chasing pack. Yet, even without his deadly side-kick, Yorke provided the vital breakthrough against stubborn Derby, converting Nicky Butt's clever feed. Cole experienced the highs and lows of football in the space of a few hours - surprisingly recalled to the England squad then relegated to the substitutes' bench at Old Trafford. Yorke was paired with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who knows more than anyone what it is like to watch United in action this season, having made only five Premiership starts. The goals, though, have still flowed in cameo performances from this determined Norwegian, six alone in United's pursuit of Arsenal's Premiership championship. In fact, very little has halted United in 1999. Five straight League and Cup wins in January restored Ferguson's men as the potent force in England. In a week which has seen them named as the richest club in Europe it's the embarrassment of playing riches which is the greatest threat to their rivals. David Beckham was also among the substitutes although Ferguson had to delve into his considerable reserves after nine minutes when a piece of controlled wing play from Ryan Giggs had the Welshman in trouble. As he went through his routine of tricks near the touchline, up went the hand to indicate that more injury woes had suddenly struck. The past two years have been plagued by hamstring problems for one of the main cutting edges of United's armoury. He walked forlornly towards the dug-out and then eventually towards the changing room fearing another lay-off. Jesper Blomqvist joined the fray as United looked for the comfort of a four-point lead in the Premiership. But with Yorke, scorer of that priceless late winner against Charlton on Sunday, subdued early on it was left to defender Jaap Stam to carry most of the first-half threat to the Derby goal. He warmed up for the task with a blistering 25-yard effort which was punched over his own bar by a relieved Russell Hoult. Derby, who had agreed to bring this game forward from Easter Monday to aid United's European ambitions, were prepared to soak up the inevitable pressure and rely on the unpredictable skills of Paulo Wanchope to cause problems at the other end. Wanchope, who announced his arrival from Costa Rica two years ago with an amazing double at Old Trafford in a shock 3-2 victory for Derby, found himself mainly isolated as United laid siege but without creating the chances their possession entitled them to. But one darting run into the United box following a neatly chipped through-ball from Lars Bohinen ended with a shot into the side netting. United, though, kept searching for the decisive opening and it almost came inadvertently from Derby defender Spencer Prior. With Paul Scholes breathing down his neck Prior's attempted header back to Hoult carried too much venom and the keeper had to arch backwards to tip the ball over the bar. Stam was unstoppable in an attacking guise, moving forward to launch another fierce drive which fizzed just wide. Then, from a Blomqvist corner, he reacted quickly to send a header over. United, as befits a team who have snatched dramatic late wins over Liverpool and Charlton, continued to pour forward, but without any real flair. Yorke went close to easing any anxiety emanating from the stands when he accelerated into the area following a prodded through-ball from Solskjaer. Hoult looked vulnerable as Yorke prepared to shoot, only for Prior to execute a superb block and stop the goalbound effort in its tracks. Derby's policy to try and suffocate the attacking life out of United was borne out of an impressive away record in which only Arsenal have conceded fewer goals on their travels. Add the fact that Derby had only lost one of their previous 11 games and it was little wonder that United weren't able to have things their own way. They had also suffered another injury scare when Yorke went down after a collision with Igor Stimac. Yorke was able to continue after treatment but United still ran into a brick wall with Derby providing proof that under the astute Jim Smith they are learning quickly. Resilience is a key component in their make-up. Roy Keane, bustling with energy and intent, was confined to long-range efforts while Butt was just off target with a deflected first-time effort. Finally, Derby's resistance was broken, with Butt the instigator and Yorke the finisher. Butt instinctively chipped forward and as Derby looked for offside Yorke's timing was perfect, moving forward and calmly steering his 19th goal of the season past Hoult. It was the tonic another full house at Old Trafford craved and continued the amazing story of the player who moved to United in the summer and has lived with all the adulation and expectation. United could have quickly added to the 65th-minute strike, with Solskjaer having a close range attempt blocked on the line and Keane seeing a wicked effort fly across the face of the goal. United's Republic of Ireland defender Denis Irwin has been rewarded with a hefty wage increase after agreeing a new one-year deal. Irwin, who joined United from Oldham in June 1990, will also be entitled to a testimonial, with manager Alex Ferguson saying: 'He might be 33 now but I know Denis is capable of playing football at the very top for at least a couple more years. He has been the most consistent player in my time here.'

Subject: UNITED ARE WORLD'S RICHEST CLUB By David Anderson, PA Sport Manchester United are officially the richest club in the world. The Old Trafford outfit dwarf every other side, including the big guns of Italy and Spain, when it comes to earnings power. A survey conducted by chartered accountants Deloitte & Touche in conjunction with football magazine FourFourTwo showed that United's turnover in the season ended in 1997 was £87.94million. That figure is nearly #30million more than second-placed Barcelona, whose turnover for the same period was #58.87million. United chairman Martin Edwards claimed the club's commercial empire has been built on the back of Alex Ferguson's transformation of the side in the 1990s. "Obviously we run the club very much as a business, but everything emanates from the football side,'' he said. Gerry Boon, chairman of Deloitte & Touche's Football Industry Team, said: ``Manchester United is one of the most famous brands in the world. "Despite having smaller crowds than some of its Italian and Spanish rivals, it still earns more income.'' FourFourTwo editor Matt Tench said United's marketing success is quite remarkable. "It's a mark of Manchester United's success that they can sell replica shirts to kids in the Far East who probably don't even know where Manchester is,'' he said. The Premiership has five clubs in the world's 20 richest clubs, and after United the most affluent English side is Newcastle in eighth place with a turnover of #41.13million. Liverpool are ninth on #39.15million, Tottenham 16th on #27.87million and Arsenal 20th on #27.16million. It should be remembered that these standings are based on financial results prior to the Gunners winning the Double and competing in the Champions' League. Rangers are the only Scottish team in the top 20 and they were ranked 14th with a #31.66m turnover. The world's 20 richest clubs: 1 Manchester United £87.94million turnover; 2 Barcelona £58.87m; 3 Real Madrid £55.66m; 4 Juventus £53.22m; 5 Bayern Munich £51.62m; 6 AC Milan £47.48m; 7 Borussia Dortmund £42.2m; 8 Newcastle £41.13m; 9 Liverpool £39.15m; 10 Inter Milan £39.07m; 11 Flamengo £37.42m; 12 Atletico Madrid £32.38m; 13 Paris St Germain £31.7m; 14 Rangers £31.66m; 15 Roma £28.22m; 16 Tottenham £27.87m; 17 Ajax £27.8m; 18 Parma £27.76m; 19 Lazio £27.33m; 20 Arsenal £27.16m.
