Subject: An Uncomfortable Reminder Date: Sun, 30 Aug 1998 21:11:06 +0200 A short piece in today's Observer read: "Manchester United's party experienced an uncomfortable journey home from Lodz last week - and the experience carried poignant overtyones only days after the match to mark the 40th anniversary of the Munich air disaster. The aircraft bringing the official party back from Poland suddenly began making loud noises after a seal broke in the charter plane's cargo door. The captain told the alarmed passengers that there was nothing to worry about, and that the failure was not a safety risk - although it made the journey uncomfortably noisy, say those on board. Their fears were not eased by their earlier experience on the inbound flight when the plane reportedly clipped some trees while landing in Lodz." I know only too well that it is not pleasant when things go wrong 30,000 feet up or when landing, having been in some very near misses myself. Good job they had a weekend off then or we may have been sitting on 2 points having played 3 games. Let's hope they don't bear any lasting mental scars from the ordeal - they'll be fortunate indeed if they don't:( Paul

Subject: BUTT OUT OF ENGLAND SQUAD By Neil Silver, PA Sport Nicky Butt is out of England's European Championship qualifying match with Sweden in Stockholm next Saturday. The Manchester United midfielder pulled out of Glenn Hoddle's squad tonight because of a painful problem with his wisdom teeth. David Davies, the Football Association's director of public affairs, said: "Manchester United have informed us that Nicky will not be joining the squad. "He has a serious problem with his wisdom teeth which requires immediate surgery." Butt, 23, is the only player so far to pull out of the party to travel to Stockholm, although coach Hoddle is awaiting news of those involved in this afternoon's Premiership match between Newcastle and Liverpool. There was a worry over Liverpool winger Steve McManaman, who went off with an ankle injury which needed an ice pack. But at least Hoddle was cheered by the form of Michael Owen, who struck a brilliant hat-trick in the Reds' 4-1 win on Tyneside. West Ham defender Rio Ferdinand has joined the squad despite aggravating a groin injury in Saturday's clash at Coventry but Hoddle has no plans to call up a replacement for Butt. "Glenn deliberately named quite a large squad so there is no problem losing one player at this stage," added Davies. "There is no need to call up anyone different." Meanwhile, Davies played down stories from Belgium suggesting England may be called upon to step in and host Euro 2000. Reports in the Belgian press claim UEFA are unhappy with the country's preparations for the tournament, which it is staging jointly with Holland, and that it might be switched to England. But Davies said: "We have every confidence in Belgium and Holland hosting the tournament." PA Sporting Life
