Barry Daily Comment:
Britain's MMC visits Man U, attends match
LONDON, Nov 29 - Britain's Monopolies and Mergers Commission
(MMC) said on Sunday it had paid a visit to Manchester United soccer club on
Sunday as part of its ongoing enquiry into the proposed acquisition of the club by
pay-TV giant BSkyB*.

The MMC said in a statement that it was standard procedure in the course of all its
enquiries for the group conducting an investigation to make such a site visit.

"This is to give the group an insight into the workings of any given company and
obtain a feel for the climate in which that company operates," it said. BSkyB, which
is 40 percent-owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp *, said last month
it was still confident it would win control of Manchester United after the government
had referred the bid to the MMC for review.

The MMC has until March 12 to report on the bid.

The MMC said its group had visited Manchester United offices in the morning and
then bought tickets for the club's match against fellow premier league side Leeds
United * in the afternoon.

"Peter Schmeichel's last season at OT" Click on image for more!"

Sunday, November 29, 1998 Published at 17:00 GMT Subject: Butt blasts United to victory Man Utd 3-2 Leeds Nicky Butt crashed home a wonderful winner 12 minutes from time to give Manchester United victory in a thrilling battle with their arch rivals. Leeds, who had not scored in their last six visits to Old Trafford, were impressive throughout and were unlucky not to claim a point from a typically bruising encounter. But in a game that was full of goalscoring opportunities Alex Ferguson's men produced the most clinical finishing and moved back into second place in the Premiership. The surprise though was that all three of United's goals came from midfielders and not the in-form front pairing of Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke. Cole was a busy man early on, but he was twice denied by saves from Nigel Martyn. But the visiting keeper was called into more meaningful action in the 26th minute, when Phil Neville crossed from the left and Nicky Butt's powerful header seemed destined for the top right-hand corner. Somehow Martyn managed one of the saves of the season, clawing the ball away after a magnicent dive - but in the process he collided with the post and appeared to jar his back. Martyn's efforts seemed to inspire his team and four minutes later they were in front from their first meaningful attack. There seemed to be no danger as Hasselbaink drifted towards the left-hand edge of the area, with Phil Neville and Roy Keane ahead of him. But the Dutchman cut inside and in the same movement unleashed a stunning low shot that snaked past a diving Peter Schmeichel and went in off the near post for his fifth goal in five games. Martyn, now in obvious discomfort, shrugged off his back injury with another great save from Butt in the 36th minute, as he diverted a low shot with his legs. In first half injury time Yorke ran at the heart of the Leeds defence and slipped the ball to makeshift left-winger Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who fired a low left-footed angled drive past Martyn and into the far corner. Martyn failed to reappear for the second half and was replaced by 19-year-old understudy Paul Robinson. And his first touch as keeper was to pick the ball out of the net - because within 30 seconds of the restart United were ahead. Paul Scholes roared past Ian Harte into the area and crossed for Keane to blast an eight-yard effort into the roof of the net. But the lead did not last long. Six minutes later United's teenage defender Wes Brown was caught in possession and Harry Kewell, who should have scored in the first half from a similar position, bore down on Schmeichel's goal and beat the big Dane with a low shot. Tempers became frayed when Keane went down in the box under a challenge from Alf Inge Haaland - whose clash with the Irish midfielder last season led to Keane's long-term injury - but the referee waved away the penalty claims. Kewell should have scored his second 15 minutes from time when Hasselbaink sent him through, but his right-foot drive hit the side netting. Robinson then palmed away a point-blank effort from Keane to deny the midfielder a repeat of his earlier goal. But with the Leeds defence sitting back, the home side struck the decisive blow in the 78th minute. Phil Neville played a square ball across the edge of the box and Butt swivelled to fire an excellent rising drive past Robinson. Leeds desperately surged forward in search of one final equaliser, but United, with fit-again Ryan Giggs playing the dying minutes, held on to secure a flattering victory. Subject: Butt blast helps United close on Villa LONDON, Nov 29 - Nicky Butt blasted the winner as Manchester United closed to within a point of English premier league leaders Aston Villa on Sunday with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Leeds United at Old Trafford. A late Nicolas Anelka goal gave injury-hit Arsenal an unimpressive 1-1 draw at home to Middlesbrough while inconsistent Liverpool beat bottom side Blackburn Rovers 2-0 at Anfield. Second-placed United now have 28 points, one less than Villa who drew 2-2 at Nottingham Forest on Saturday. Arsenal's point moved them up to fourth on 25 points, three more than Liverpool in eighth. For once, United's 21-goal strike force of Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke drew a blank as Leeds stole an early lead when in-form Dutchman Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink beat Peter Schmeichel at his near post after 29 minutes. Norwegian Ole Gunnar Solskjaer drove in an equaliser right on half-time and a minute after the break Roy Keane sidefooted United ahead. Leeds hit back when Australian Harry Kewell, who missed a clear chance when Leeds were leading 1-0, profited from a Jaap Stam gaffe to make it 2-2 six minutes later. But England midfielder Butt, who has struggled to hold down a first team place at Old Trafford this season, settled the match with a fierce right-footed shot after a clever turn on the edge of the area in the 77th minute. Arsenal, whose European Champions' Cup hopes ended on Wednesday, looked like extending their goalless streak to five matches against Middlesbrough. Former Benfica striker Brian Deane got in behind the Arsenal defence to fire the visitors ahead after six minutes and they looked to be heading for their first Highbury win since 1939 until Frenchman Anelka smacked in the equaliser off the underside of the bar in the 89th minute. At Anfield troubled England midfielder Paul Ince lashed in the opener against Blackburn from 25 metres in the 30th minute. Teenager Michael Owen made it 2-0 three minutes later when his sharp shot was blocked by Blackburn goalkeeper John Filan but rebounded off his knee and into the net. Blackburn, in the caretaker care of Tony Parkes following the departure of Roy Hodgson last weekend, never really looked like scoring against a Liverpool defence which had looked so vulnerable in the 3-1 defeat at Celta Vigo in the UEFA Cup on Tuesday.

Subject: Manchester United 3 Leeds 2 By David Anderson, PA Sport Nicky Butt picked the perfect time to score his first goal of the season as he settled this fiercely-contested Roses clash at Old Trafford. Leeds' depleted side were on course to claim a well-deserved point against their deadliest rivals until the England midfielder netted a 77th-minute winner to take Manchester second in the Premiership. The goal will be all the more sweeter for Butt because he has been in and out of the side in recent weeks. He started in right midfield in place of David Beckham, who was rested along with Jesper Blomqvist and Denis Irwin. How Leeds boss David O'Leary would like that luxury and instead he had to make do without the suspended Lee Bowyer and Robert Molenaar and the injured Lucas Radebe. And O'Leary's plight worsened after 25 minutes when Martin Hiden was stretchered off to be replaced by David Wetherall. Ferguson had told his players he would not tolerate any more under-performing, but his words went unheeded as they made a ponderous start. They repeatedly gave away possession, although the ball was bobbling about on the relaid surface. Instead it was Leeds who handed them their first opening when Jonathon Woodgate and Ian Harte missed Wes Brown's ball to let in Andy Cole, but he was thwarted by Nigel Martyn. That was the first of a number of fine saves by Martyn and he pulled off a fantastic stop to keep out Butt's header from Phil Neville's cross. Unfortunately the England goalkeeper injured his back making the save. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink then stunned the home fans when he fired Leeds ahead on the half hour. Manchester gave the ball away in their own half and when the Dutch international received the ball on the left wing he cut inside, beat Phil Neville and hit a right-foot shot which went in off the inside of the near post. It was his fifth goal in five games and Leeds' first at Old Trafford since August 1991. Cole then sliced over before Martyn stuck out his right foot to deny Butt. Leeds might have had a second when Stephen McPhail played Harry Kewell in behind the Reds' static defence, but the Australian lifted the ball over Peter Schmeichel and wide of the goal. Just as Leeds' thoughts were turning towards a well-earned cup of tea, United equalised in the 45th minute. Roy Keane played the ball to Dwight Yorke, who beat Wetherall before releasing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who marked his first league start in over two months by shooting across Martyn into the far corner for his seventh goal of the season. Leeds' bad luck continued when Paul Robinson took over from Martyn at half-time and within 22 seconds of the restart he was picking the ball out of his net. Paul Scholes broke down the right and pulled the ball back to Keane who rammed home his second strike of the season from eight yards out. United were a totally different side from the one which had laboured so much in the first-half and Phil Neville fired an angled drive just over. Leeds, though, were far from finished and they silenced the United faithful with a 51st-minute equaliser. Kewell capitalised on a mistake by Brown and he waited until Schmeichel had committed himself before slotting home his fifth goal in eight games. Keane felt he should have had a penalty four minutes later and the angry Reds skipper had words with Alf-Inge Haaland, whom he injured his knee trying to foul last season. But just like with United's three other spot-kick appeals in the first half, referee Graham Poll gave nothing. Ferguson was determined not to see another two points slip away and on came the fit-again Ryan Giggs and Teddy Sheringham. Kewell spurned a great chance to restore Leeds' lead in the 73rd minute when he shot wide after being played in by Hasselbaink. Robinson proved he is no slouch either when he produced a great stop to deny Sheringham. Then came Butt's moment of glory when he received the ball in the area from Phil Neville and spun round before shooting home past Robinson. As the game entered its final minutes Leeds brought on supersub Alan Smith, but the 18-year-old could not make it three goals in three appearances from the bench. Teams Man Utd: Schmeichel, G. Subject: BUTT SENDS REDS INTO SECOND A dramatic day in the Premiership on Sunday saw title favourites Manchester United move up to second with a 3-2 win over Leeds at Old Trafford while reigning champions Arsenal could only manage a last-gasp 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough at Highbury. In the afternoon's other game Liverpool beat managerless Blackburn 2-0 at Anfield. At Old Trafford Nicky Butt picked the perfect time to score his first goal of the season as he settled the fiercely-contested Roses clash between Manchester United and Leeds. Leeds' depleted side were on course to claim a well-deserved point against their deadliest rivals until the England midfielder netted a 77th-minute winner to take Manchester second in the Premiership. As the game entered its final minutes Leeds brought on supersub Alan Smith, but the 18-year-old could not make it three goals in three appearances from the bench. In north London Arsenal were grateful to escape with a point after a 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough. Nicolas Anelka ended Arsenal's goal famine with a dramatic 89th-minute equaliser to prevent manager Arsene Wenger suffering a third consecutive defeat for the first time since his arrival at Highbury. The French striker, who had scored Arsenal's previous goal - 533 playing minutes earlier against Everton on November 8 - crashed the ball home off the crossbar after Remi Garde's hopeful ball into the crowded Middlesbrough goalmouth had been completely missed by Middlesbrough's Brian Deane. It was agony for former Benfica striker Deane who turned from hero to villain having put Boro in front after just six minutes and then twice gone close to extending the lead. He finished by limping off injured seconds before the end. The final match of the day in the Premiership saw Liverpool win 2-0 against Blackburn at Anfield. Paul Ince rifled in a stunning opener for the Reds on the half hour from just outside the box and Michael Owen made it 2-0 soon after with a scrambled effort. © PA Sporting Life
