Lady Luck put in a long-overdue appearance at Old Trafford on Saturday.
It's true we've been pretty inconsistent since January but we haven't had
much luck either: shots hitting the bar, post, goalie's legs, etc.,
penalties not given, offside goals awarded to the opposition, whinge,
whinge, and more whinge. But it seems we finally got lucky again with
those two late goals. From all the reports so far, it was the right result.

It was certainly a relief to win again. As Boon Wee put it, we all felt
"elastic" after the goals went in. I think he means "ecstatic", but
"elastic" is even better. I listened to second-half commentary on the
Beeb World Service, sitting rigid with tension and frustration and in the
sort of deep gloom you only feel when United can't score, world peace is
being threatened, or your wife is loose on a shopping rampage with a
stack of credit cards. Then, as Ronny's goal went in, I did indeed become
'elastic'; muscles relaxed and bones became rubbery as I flowed off the
chair and formed a small relieved puddle on the carpet.

We're creating enough chances but, like every other team, we still need a
helping hand from Lady Luck so let's hope she's wearing red at Ewood Park
next week.

If she is, we'll all be elastic again.

Manchester United seek new deals with England trio

LONDON, March 30 (Reuters) - Manchester United are negotiating new
contracts to keep England midfield
trio David Beckham, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt at the club for a
further five years, club chief executive Martin
     Edwards said on Monday.
"We are in negotiations with Scholes, Butt and Beckham," Edwards said
in a telephone briefing as the club
     published its latest financial results.
"The three of them signed long-term deals two years ago but they've
come a long way since then and we'd hate
     to lose them."
The three players are already under contract with the English premier
league champions until 2001 but United are
hoping to conclude new five-year agreements which could keep them at
Old Trafford until 2003.
Brothers Gary and Phil Neville, who have also come through the United
youth scheme and gone on to win
England caps, have already signed seven-year deals, Edwards said.
United reported profit before tax of 14.9 million pounds ($25.1
million) in the six months to January 31. The club
also said it had renewed its shirt sponsorship deal with Japan's Sharp
Corp for a further two years. ($ = 0.594
     British Pounds)
