Subject: Bayern Watch
Bayern beat Werder Bremen. Here is Reuter's report:
United have little to fear Ian Hawkey
Werder Bremen 0 Bayern Munich 1
THE secrets brought back from Bremen by Alex Ferguson
will hardly have caused Customs & Excise to delay him long
on his return. What the watching Manchester United
manager will have learned about the Bayern Munich side
before Wednesday's Champions League meeting was chiefly
that they know how to pace themselves.
Giovanne Elber's winning goal, three minutes from time,
extended the visitors' 100% record in the Bundesliga. For
the most part, the football was less inspiring. "They were
clearly the better side," said Ferguson. "You always felt they
had something left over."
After an uninspired Bayern first half, Elber was that
something. Still angered by an off-side decision ruling out his
71st-minute finish from a Bixente Lizarazu cross, the
Brazilian sealed the points by touching home after Jens
Jeremies had met a Stefan Effenberg corner. Six wins in six
matches, and 18 goals so far, for Bayern.
Defending deep, with the versatile Lothar Matthäus as
long-stop, Bayern allowed a fired-up home side generous
space early on. Dieter Eilts might have scored, lobbing over
in a one-on-one with Bayern goalkeeper Oliver Kahn. Then
Kahn tipped over Marco Bode's second-half effort to
preserve the stalemate.
That move might have been noted with some enthusiasm by
Ferguson. Bode was given ample room to manoeuvre by the
right wing-back Thomas Strunz. On the opposite flank,
Lizarazu kept a tighter ship, and his duel with David
Beckham will be interesting.
Ottmar Hitzfeld, the Bayern coach, prefers Lizarazu to
Michael Tarnat, his German wing-back, for his "pace and
concentration". But Mehmet Scholl will be unavailable
because of injury on Wednesday, while Mario Basler hopes
to shrug off his flu to provide a touch more creativity than
Bayern showed yesterday. Thomas Helmer, the captain, has
a 50-50 chance of playing.
Of those on view, Jeremies provided Bayern's engine - "A
real Hitzfeld-type player," said Ferguson, comparing his role
to Paul Lambert's under Hitzfeld at Borussia Dortmund.
Effenberg will need monitoring, as will Elber, whose control
created Bayern's better openings. "We've got a chance,"
concluded Ferguson as the home fans skulked away.

United To Set Up Nursery Scheme?
Reports claim United have signed a deal with Belgian Division Two side Royal
Antwerp which will ultimately enable manager Alex Ferguson to take his pick
from some of the world's best young talent.
Ferguson aims to defy British laws which prevent him from having first say
on youngsters from Africa, South America and Australia because they are
unable to obtain work permits.
In seasons past, Italian and Spanish clubs have snapped up emerging talent
before they are capped by their countries - much to Ferguson's annoyance.
As it stands, British law stipulates that in-coming players have to be
senior pros with international honours if they are coming in from outside
the European Community.
Reports claim negotiations, between United and Royal Antwerp officials, are
at an advanced stage and formalities could even be completed in a matter of
weeks.
A Belgian FA spokesman said:
"This would be no problem to us, we are aware that our clubs are in
negotiation.
"It would not break any rules here."
The deal would ultimately mean that United could arrange for top Africans
and South Americans to go to Belgium, play for a couple of years, get EC
citizenship and then move to Old Trafford.

Subject: Double defends French doctor over Neville World Cup injection
Monday September 28, 1998
The FA has denied that there was anything mysterious about injections administered to at least two Manchester United players, including Gary Neville, on England duty during the World Cup.
After it emerged that Neville was given mineral and vitamin boosts by a French doctor, Yann Rougier, three hours before the second-round match against Argentina, United's manager Alex Ferguson wrote to the FA demanding an explanation.
Steve Double, the FA's spokesman, said: "Individual club doctors were informed towards the end of last season that players involved in the World Cup would undergo blood tests to assess vitamin and mineral levels.
"Because the England players come together to work in a concentrated training camp we need to have a system that all the players can use, rather than the one put forward by individual clubs.
"Dr Rougier is a respected doctor, who works with some of the top clubs in Europe, including Monaco and Milan."
Rougier defended the injections, saying: "The minerals and vitamins I use protect the muscles and will have excellent long-term effects."

Subject: United want England explanation over injections - paper
LONDON, Sept 27 - Manchester United have written to the English Football Association (F.A.) demanding details of energy-boosting injections given to England players at the World Cup in France, a British newspaper said on Sunday.
The Express on Sunday said United manager Alex Ferguson was concerned at the after-effects of the injections on several of his players who were in the England squad.
French doctor Yann Rougier supplied the England squad with a programme of energy supplements at France '98 including the amino acid creatine, the paper said.
One United player in the England squad, Gary Neville, wrote in his book "For Club and Country" published this month that he had received injections from Rougier on the eve of the World Cup on June 10.
"I went to Doctor Rougier for some treatment and told him that my legs felt very tired. He gave me an injection in my arm and told me I would feel fine in three days," Neville wrote.
The F.A. were not available for comment on Sunday but spokesman Steve Double told The Express on Sunday: "For the (England) games against Colombia and Argentina the players were given booster injections three hours before kick-off.
"We cannot confirm exactly what was given as the records are with Dr Rougier in France...As for the letter from Manchester United, that is being dealt with and a full explanation will be given to the club and Alex Ferguson if that is what is required."
Rougier also defended his methods, saying: "It is all natural and approved by the International Olympic Committee."
The use of creatine, which is not a banned substance, was at the centre of a recent investigation into doping in Italian football.
Teddy Sheringham, Paul Scholes and David Beckham were the other United players in Glenn Hoddle's England squad.
