Keane ready for life? ««

Roy Keane could be set to sign a record £10m five year deal to
keep him at Manchester United for life.
The United skipper is ready to negotiate with United chiefs and
is reportedly prepared to accept a £2m a year offer.
Keane, who Alex Ferguson describes as Britain's finest player,
could walk away on a free transfer in summer 2000 but is
           committed to the United cause.
Though rumours abound that Keane is unsettled, that would
appear to be the work of an agent determined to seal a record
           pay deal for his charge.

Happy RED Year from Barry and Bill at Simplenet!

Subject: Man United v Nottm Forest 26/12/98 3.00 Man United (1) 3 Nottm Forest (0) 0 FT Johnsen 28,59 Giggs 62 Premier Table Chelsea 19 9 9 1 31-17 36pts Aston Villa 19 10 6 3 29-19 36 Man Utd 19 9 7 3 39-23 34 Nottingham Forest's visit to Old Trafford proved to be just the tonic Manchester United needed as they brushed the FA Carling Premiership's weakest team aside to collect three vital points. United went into the game on the back of their worst defensive run since 1992 and they had only won one of their seven previous matches. Such form ultimately made little difference against a game, but inadequate Forest as United strolled past Dave Bassett's basement boys. Ronny Johnsen was United's unlikely hero as he netted their first two goals, including a spectacular second, before Ryan Giggs completed the scoring. Manager Alex Ferguson will be glad to record a win finally in the month of December, but he will perhaps take more satisfaction from his side's first clean sheet in 12 games. Forest's battle to pull themselves free of the relegation quagmire is looking more and more hopeless and they have now equalled their own Premiership record of 16 matches without a win. Forest went down that season and with each passing match that looks more likely to be their fate at the end of this campaign. Once again Ferguson had rung the changes because of injury, suspension and the desire to rest players and Teddy Sheringham partnered Paul Scholes in attack, while Henning Berg and Johnsen were deployed in the heart of the defence. Bassett knew the odds were stacked against his side and he admitted his players would be struggling to make the United bench, while their one individual of class, Pierre van Hooijdonk, was banned. The first-half mirrored the dull and dismal conditions and once again United's passing was missing its customary zip and accuracy. Forest were more than holding their own in terms of possession and territorial advantage - until David Beckham began to find his range. From one delivery Dave Beasant produced a tremendous save to stop Ryan Giggs' header flying into the top corner. From the resultant corner, which was United's first of the match, Beckham swung the ball over to the back post where Johnsen headed home. United scarcely deserved their 28th-minute lead, but they picked up after the goal. Nicky Butt pounced on a loose pass to launch a United counterattack which almost resulted in a goal when Giggs' pass took a deflection off Steve Chettle and nearly beat Beasant. Roy Keane, who was clearly relishing this battle against his old club, then unleashed a 20-yard drive, but unfortunately straight into Beasant's arms. In the second half United began to move up through the gears and Scholes released Keane with a delightful flick only for United's skipper to be thwarted by Mathieu Louis-Jean at the expense of a corner. Giggs then produced a fine run down the left and found Sheringham totally unmarked in the Forest box, but his shot was saved by Beasant. United were looking increasingly dangerous and they put the game beyond Forest's reach with a two-goal burst inside three minutes. In the 59th minute Beckham swung over a free-kick which Berg headed back across the box for Johnsen to volley home his third goal of the season. There was no holding United now and three minutes later Sheringham fed Scholes who released Giggs on the left and he lifted the ball expertly over Beasant and into the Forest goal for his sixth of the campaign. That was the cue for Ferguson to bring on his substitutes and on came Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Jonathan Greening and Jesper Blomqvist. Forest also brought on rookie defender Chris Doig for his first taste of Premier League action. The rest of the game was little more than a training exercise for United and they stroked the ball about until referee Jeff Winter blew for full time to end Forest's misery. Subject: United - Forest TV report by Terry Dale Having just carved up the Christmas turkey the day before, I'm sure the team were looking forward to doing the same to Forest, a team that has the word 'Pinnacle' emblazoned across the shirts despite being bottom of the league. One of life's little ironies. But the team sheet looked a bit odd. Fergie appeared to have given us a defence and midfield and then a bit more defence and midfield just in case the Pinnacle team were Inter Milan in disguise. Cole and Yorke were out, while Ole and Jesper were cheek by cheek on the bench. I had visions of Giggs and Becks sending in delightful crosses all afternoon with nobody on the end of them. Had Tinker Bell tinkered again? Our men up front were Teddy and Scholes. Hhhhhm. Meanwhile, back in our 38-man defence we had Ronny and Berg as central defenders with Dinniz and a lightweight Phizza as full backs. Butty and Keano were our legalised killers. If we couldn't keep a clean sheet today, then we might as well give up and change places with City. But where would the goals come from? Ronaldo Johnsen?? Oh come on! Be serious. The first 25 minutes were dire. Until we scored, I thought Pinnacle were marginally the better side. Our goal came from a set piece, fittingly, as we hadn't looked much like scoring from open play. Becks sent in a floated corner from our left, two Pinnacle defenders did a delightful Swan Lake sort of pirouette missing the ball completely, and Ronaldo Johnsen directed a slow-motion header past their dazed goalkeeper. At this point I must have fainted with the shock of going a goal up because when I regained my senses Phizza Neville had just been booked for an offense I'd missed. What did he do? After the goal we looked a lot livelier without quite managing to sustain the pressure for more than a few minutes at a time. Still, because of our strong showing in the last 15 minutes of the half, we just about deserved the lead at half time. But it says a lot about our current form that, even leading at home against the league's bottom team, I still felt Forest were capable of surprising us. [A thought that's been giving me sleepless nights for a couple of weeks: does Becks have a phantom beard or simply a dirty chin? I keep seeing a mysterious shadow on his chin that comes and goes duing the game. Does he need a shave or do I need glasses?] The second half was much like the first except we were kicking in the opposite direction. The second goal came on 58 minutes and it had clearly been on the cards. A couple of minutes before, Keano had been put through after some neat passing from Berg and Scholes, but the ball was put out; then just a minute before the goal, a fine Giggs run saw Teddy with only the goalie to beat but he hit the ball straight at him. When the goal came, it was another set piece. Becks's cross was won by, I think, Berg, who headed down for Ronaldo Johnsen to volley in his second. So Fergie was apparently right: we didn't need recognizable strikers at all. Leave it to the central defenders, boys. Before it had fully sunk in that Ronny was now on a hat trick, Giggs made it 3-0 after some nice work from Teddy (suspiciously offside when he received the ball) and Becks, who tapped a gentle pass for Giggsy to run on to and chip the goalie. That was the cue for Fergie to sub everyone in sight over the next few minutes, and, with Chelsea coming up, who can blame him? The Pinnacle team were a spent force, not that they'd ever had too much to spend, so on came Ole for Scholes, and then Greening for Keane. (Greening's first delicate touch was to have the ball blasted into his face at close range. He may never look the same again.) Then, finally, on came Jesper for Giggs. At this point, we were Scandinavia United with Schmikes, Berg, Johnsen, Ole and Blomqvist all on the pitch at the same time. Talking about Schmikes, the only really threatening moment of the entire game came when the Great Dane had another Munich-type rush of blood to the head. He came charging out of his area to clear the ball with Shipperley closing in, slipped theatrically on the wet turf (yes, blame the grass, Schmikes), and then we all sat and watched open-mouthed as Shipperley floated the ball towards our goalkeeperless goalmouth ... he missed by perhaps 20 centmetres (a couple of feet in old money). Our defence, led by Henning Berg, then verbally assaulted the poor Schmuck. Having been at the wrong end of a Schmikes' tongue-lashing on numerous occasions, they weren't going to let this occasion pass without comment. No doubt, tomorrow the venerable old hacks of the gutter press will be nodding their white heads gravely and muttering about senile goalkeepers. We had a few more chances before the game died a nautural death, most notably was Teddy's header that, like all his other attempts, did not quite hit the target. Indeed, one must ask oneself what in fact Teddy's target was as the goals themselves were on each occasion located in another part of the pitch. Fergie did not look too pleased, but then he never does, does he? It was a lousy game, with the odd moment of excitement, but we earned a clean sheet and we scored three goals with a team that looked pretty unbalanced to me (team-wise, not mentally). Hopefully, we'll have Stam, Yorke and Cole back for Chelsea, and we are playing at Stamford Bridge, where we've done well in recent years. Let's hope this is the turning point in our recent run of poor form. ____________ Terry

Subject: Manchester United get back on track MANCHESTER, England, Dec 26 (Reuters) - Manchester United kept the pressure on their English league rivals on Saturday and consigned Nottingham Forest to a record-equalling 16th successive premier league match without a win. Two goals from Norwegian midfielder Ronny Johnsen and a third by Welsh international Ryan Giggs wrapped up a one-sided 3-0 win on a scrappy Old Trafford pitch. The clash of former European Cup winners left once-powerful Forest rooted to the foot of the table, without a victory since August and just 12 points from 19 games. United, who remain in third place on 34 points behind Chelsea and Aston Villa at the halfway point in the season, were without defender Jaap Stam and injured strikers Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole but still had plenty of firepower in reserve. They turned on the style to end their worst run of form in six years after going six games -- four in the league -- without a win. They had won just once in nine matches before Saturday due to some woeful defending. Most recently, they had lost their unbeaten home record in a 3-2 defeat to Middlesbrough before Christmas and needed a good win before travelling to Chelsea on Tuesday. "We have a very good record at Chelsea...we're looking forward to Tuesday," said manager Alex Ferguson. "I don't think there are bad defenders here at all, I think they have been careless in the last few weeks." Forest, still a point behind Southampton at the tail end of the table, equalled a premier league record they themselves set between August 21 and December 17, 1996. They ended that season relegated to the first division. Johnsen opened the scoring in the 28th minute, taking advantage of poor Forest marking to bang in a header off a well-flighted Giggs corner. He doubled his tally in the 59th with a volleyed shot past Dave Beasant. Another sweet United move saw Giggs wrap victory up in the 62nd, bursting into the area and deftly chipping the ball over the goalkeeper. "I don't think you'll see a better piece of football than that anywhere in the country," said Ferguson. "That always lights you up and lights the fans up. I think at the end of the day that we won very comfortably." Forest last played United in the league in a 4-0 Boxing Day defeat at the City Ground in 1996 after their disastrous run had just ended. Then, as now, they were bottom and United third. Once again, Forest rarely threatened and could count themselves lucky not to have lost by far more. United's opening goal came after Forest's veteran goalkeeper Beasant -- doing his best to keep the scoreline respectable -- made a great reflex save from a Giggs header, tipping the ball just over the bar at full stretch. A rare Forest chance in an often scrappy match, partly due to squally weather and the poor state of the Old Trafford pitch, came when Neil Shipperley forced a diving save out of goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel early in the first half. The referee had already whistled for an infringement and United quickly re-asserted themselves, with nine attempts on target in the first half to Forest's three. Giggs drove the ball across the goalmouth in the first half but there was nobody to latch on to it while Teddy Sheringham should have scored in the 65th but allowed Beasant to smother the ball at his feet. Johnsen's second goal started with a David Beckham freekick, passed on by Berg for the Norwegian to finish. The figures at the end told it all, with United creating 19 attempts on goal to Forest's four. It was the first time United had kept a clean sheet for 12 games.

Saturday, December 26, 1998 Published at 20:36 GMT Subject: Johnsen shows United the way .... BBC report Forest's Steve Chettle foils Teddy Sheringham Manchester Utd 3-0 Nottingham Forest United failed to find top gear but still did enough to coast past a hard-working Forest side and go third. Ronny Johnsen scored twice and Ryan Giggs added the third to keep the Old Trafford title challenge on course. But defeat for bottom club Forest meant 16 league games without a win, equalling a Premiership record. Alex Ferguson again rang the changes, with Teddy Sheringham partnering Paul Scholes up front. But they struggled to find their rhythm again with too many wayward passes. The first half was scrappy but central defender Johnsen showed the forwards how to do it with his second and third goals of the season. United were struggling to create many chances from open play - Scholes shooting over with a rare effort on goal. But with another full house becoming frustrated, they broke the deadlock from a set piece on 28 minutes. Dave Beasant saved a Ryan Giggs header but from the resulting Beckham corner Johnsen headed in at the back post for his second goal of the season. The Norwegian struck again on 59 minutes, volleying in with his right foot after Henning Berg flicked on. Three minutes later Giggs danced onto Scholes' delightful pass and chipped over Beasant for the third. Forest, without the suspended Pierre van Hooijdonk, created almost nothing at the other end. Stone came closest in the first half, but even then referee Jeff Winter had blown for a foul. Neil Shipperley missed the target near the end after a mistake by Peter Schmeichel. Manchester United: Schmeichel, P Neville, Berg, Johnsen, Irwin, Beckham, Butt, Keane, Giggs, Sheringham, Scholes. Subs: Blomqvist, Brown, Solskjaer, Greening, Van Der Gouw.
