INJURY SCUPPERS FERGIE'S GOOD DEED

Alex Ferguson has had to abandon his neighbourly gesture designed to help
Manchester City avoid relegation from Division One.

Ferguson had agreed to let Manchester United's England Under-21 star John
Curtis go on loan to Maine Road, but the idea has been scrapped because of
injury to Curtis' fellow defender Michael Clegg.

City boss Joe Royle said: ``It was a marvellous gesture by Alex in the first
place and we very much appreciated it.''

Marcus.

World Cup-Norway continue unbeaten run
     By Bert Lauwers

BRUSSELS, March 25 (Reuters) - Norway twice came from behind to draw 2-2
with fellow World Cup finalists Belgium in a
friendly soccer match on Wednesday and maintain their 14-month unbeaten run.

The Norwegians suffered their last defeat in a friendly against Australia
in January 1997.

Captain Franky Van der Elst put the hosts ahead in the seventh minute with
a scorching 20-metre drive that left goalkeeper
Thomas Gill rooted to the spot, after a Luis Oliveira corner kick was
poorly cleared by Norway's defence.

The visitors struck back four minutes later when Vidar Riseth cleverly
slipped through the offside trap to pick up an Eric
Mykland pass and rounded goalkeeper Dany Verlinden.

Marc Wilmots made it 2-1 for Belgium in the 66th with a perfectly timed
header off a free kick by substitute Tjorven De Brul.

But Norway levelled again five minutes later through Manchester United
striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who had been out of
the national team for nearly a year through injury and came on only as a
second-half substitute.

Solskjaer slipped the ball through Verlinden's legs after taking an Oyvind
Leonhardsen pass.

``It's a bit of a shame, two small mistakes at the back and two goals,''
Wilmots said. ``But it's a good result, it was already
better than against the United States.''

Belgium beat the U.S. 2-0 in their previous friendly last month despite
glaring errors in defence.

For Norway, it was the second draw in two matches this year after they held
World Cup hosts France 3-3 away last month.
They play Denmark next month. ^REUTERS@

Howdy folks. Cop this -
Lifted without a whisper of permission from the Times:

KPMG sees net gains for Man United.

A EUROPEAN football super league with up to two
divisions and involving as many as 32 teams is expected to
be in place in as little as three years' time, a survey of
leading clubs, financiers and industry experts is predicting.

However, the bad news for the highly developed British
football industry is that only one quoted club - Manchester
United - is considered likely to gain an automatic place in
the top flight and to enjoy the massive financial benefits
that this league is expected to bring. The survey -
conducted on behalf of KPMG's European Football Unit
  - asked the opinions of leading football clubs, including the
former European Cup winners, AC Milan, Ajax and
Liverpool, financial backers of football, including
Deutsche Morgan Grenfell, Singer & Friedlander and
ING Barings, and other industry experts.

More than three quarters of those responding thought that
there would be a league within five years. The consensus
was that a super league, likely to play matches midweek,
would be launched in the 2001-02 season. The league,
run by Uefa, the European football organisation, would
probably be two divisions of up to 16 teams in each.

The expectation is that a European super league could be
a big moneyspinner for the participating clubs - with 57
per cent of respondents thinking it will be more lucrative
for clubs than the existing competitions.

The current European format is already highly lucrative.
Newcastle United revealed that it had made stlg5.5 million
of extra revenue from its participation in this year's
competition and it was knocked out in the second stage.
Manchester United, which reached the quarter finals, is
expected to have made stlg10 million from its run.

The league may also have a detrimental effect on the
Premier League, with the cream of sponsorship and TV
income going to the European competition. Three teams
from Germany and Italy are expected to be in the top
flight with Manchester United. Two other English teams -
Newcastle United and Liverpool - would be expected to
gain admission to the second division.

Hah! European Division2, English Division1. Sounds about right.

16 teams, home & away that's 30 games. Sounds like we'll be putting
the ticket office staff out for Fizzy Pop & FA cup games, reserves in
the Premier League.

Ciao,
Pete.
