A RIGHT ROLE FOR BECKS
GLenn Hoddle has brought David Beckham down to earth. There is nothing
mystic or mysterious about Hoddle's team strategy when it comes to Beckham's
role in the World Cup.
Even if Paul Gascoigne doesn't make it to France, the quality crosses and
balance Beckham gives to the right-hand flank is paramount to Hoddle's team.
With Hoddle determined to field "as much experience as I can", the
Manchester United youngster again operates on the right with the coach
looking for him to feed skipper Alan Shearer.
Despite calls from some quarters for Beckham to move inside, Hoddle
stressed: "We've looked at David in that central position, but for this game
we are in World Cup mode.
"Everybody throws that at me, about David playing inside, but he very rarely
plays there for his club. Without a doubt he's the best crosser of a ball in
the Premiership and if you've got Alan in the side you'd be a fool not to
use Beckham wide."
Hoddle will field a team very close to the one he would like on duty in the
World Cup opener against Tunisia, with David Seaman, Tony Adams and Sol
Campbell returning to the defence and Teddy Sheringham partnering Shearer up
front.
JOHNSEN'S INJURY HELL
EXCLUSIVE BY STEVE MILLAR
Ronny Johnsen's season could be wiped out with cartilage trouble. The
Manchester United star broke down in training for Norway yesterday and was
immediately ruled out of tonight's World Cup warm-up against Denmark in
Copenhagen.
But further medical checks discovered serious knee trouble which plunged
both club and country into crisis. Norway want Johnsen to have surgery now
so he is fit for the start of the World Cup.
But that will mean the classy defender-cum-midfielder missing United's final
three games of the season. Alex Ferguson will speak to Johnsen when he
returns from international duty tomorrow.
The United boss has already been hit by a catalogue of injuries with Peter
Schmeichel the latest to suffer hamstring problems. If United wait until the
final game of the season then Johnsen will go under the knife 24 hours after
playing Barnsley on May 10.
But that will mean him missing Norway's opening game against Morocco in
Montpellier on June 10.

Subject: Stam MY UNITED DREAM ``Reds are the only club for me''
EXCLUSIVE by Stuart Mathieson
Jaap Stam
JAAP Stam is adamant that his transfer saga will be resolved with a world
record move to Manchester United.
The 25-year-old Dutch defender told M.E.N. Sport exclusively today: ``I am
not even thinking about the possibility of going anywhere else. Manchester
United are still the only club I want to play for.''
Spanish club Atletico Madrid and Spurs are reportedly waiting to swoop if
the Reds and Stam's agent Ton Van Dalen are unable to come up with a
financial package to match PSV Eindhoven's valuation.
But Stam said: ``I've heard and read about other clubs but United is my
dream move and I think everything will work out.
``You want things to move quickly, of course, but we are talking about a
lot of money. Big decisions have to be made and when the deal is so big it
takes time. However, my message to Manchester United fans is that I hope to
see you soon.''
Dialogue
United have already had two bids turned down, the second of which was a
world record for a defender of around £9m.
Stam's agent Ton Van Dalen is now waiting for further dialogue with United
chairman Martin Edwards to find a solution.
Ironically, fellow Holland internationals Dennis Bergkamp and Marc Overmars
of the Reds' title rivals Arsenal have helped convince Stam his future is
at Old Trafford.
``Manchester United have always been my favourite club since I was a
schoolboy,'' says Jaap.
``But Dennis and Marc have spoken to me while we've been with Holland and
they've told me all about what life is like in England and what it's like
in the Premiership.
``They've heard all about United's interest in me and they've confirmed
what a great team and a very big club they are. The club is known all over
the world.
``When I first became a professional footballer my ambition was to play in
England. But as I've improved, and in the last two years everything has
been going so well with PSV, you start to think about clubs like Manchester
United. That became my dream.
``I watch Match of the Day every weekend in Holland and, of course, United
are on a lot. They're terrific players at Old Trafford. In fact, if you are
not a good player you don't play for Manchester United.
``I hope I am going to get the chance to prove the same. A lot of people
like Dennis Bergkamp and Marc Overmars have told me my game would suit the
English style and that it's the country for me.''
Stam who has won the Dutch title, Dutch Cup and Super Cup and was Holland's
Player of the year in `97 says, ``I feel I am ready for the challenge of
playing in England with a club like United.
``I have played in Holland now at the highest level for PSV and I have won
everything here that I can win. I have made the decision now to go on a
step further. I want that to be with Manchester United and I hope they are
going to be champions as well.
``It looks like they'll be in the Champions League anyway and that would be
great if I joined them. I was quite happy with my own game in the Champions
League this season with PSV.
``Everyone in Holland expected Manchester
