Dwight Yorke out (groin) and probably Solskjaer (ankle) so we will rely on a strike force of Cole & Sheringham. McClair formerly played under the Rovers manager at Manchester United, where Kidd was number two to Alex Ferguson. He left Old Trafford in the summer to return to Scottish Premier club Motherwell but they have agreed to allow him to return south for an undisclosed fee. "We are sad to lose someone of the calibre of Brian McClair, but wish him all the best in what is undoubtedly a superb career opportunity," said 'Well chairman John Boyle. McClair, who has been unable to win a place in Motherwell's starting eleven in recent weeks after an injury lay-off, opened negotiations with Blackburn on Tuesday. Rovers have agreed to play a match against Motherwell as part of the deal, but the date has yet to be arranged.

Subject: Galante takes a swipe at the Old Trafford 'Spice Girls' Friday, December 18, 1998 Inter Milan defender Fabio Galante last night stoked the fires ahead of the Champions League clash with Manchester United by branding Alex Ferguson's side the 'Spice Girls' of football. Galante's jibe fuelled an already potentially explosive match which will see David Beckham up against Diego Simeone, the Argentina World Cup star accused of play-acting in the incident which saw the England midfielder sent off at France 98. Galante, 25, landed the first psychological blow in the build-up to the quarter-final showdown in March. In an clear reference to Beckham's high-profile relationship with Posh Spice Victoria Adams and the glamorous image cultivated by Ferguson's team of young stars, Galante joked: 'Hooray, we are going to be playing the Spice Girls!' He poured scorn on United's defensive record during the qualifying stages of the competition and claimed Inter's prolific strike force - headed by World Footballer of the Year Ronaldo - could profit from their lapses at the back. Galante, who was linked with a move to Liverpool in the summer, said: 'United let in a lot of goals. They scored 20 in the group stage but they let in 11.' Ronaldo made his debut for Inter in a pre-season friendly victory over United last year and is convinced his side can deliver a repeat performance. The 22-year-old Brazilian said: 'Playing United is a challenge I will relish and one Inter are capable of winning. 'It will be a special meeting for me because it will remind me of a notable day in my career. I only played for 17 minutes but it was incredible.' Retaliation from the Old Trafford camp was swift, with top scorer Dwight Yorke insisting that United will not suffer from an inferiority complex against president Massimo Moratti's side. He said: 'That is what the Champions League is all kPabout and if you are going to win the thing then you have got to beat everybody. 'Inter have got Ronaldo and we all know he is the world's No.1 footballer but we have got a lot of quality here as well.' Beckham was warned yesterday to expect no mercy from Simeone in the match. The words of caution came from Simeone's international team-mate Ariel Ortega, who welcomed new Sampdoria boss David Platt to his first training session at Bogliano in Genoa yesterday afternoon. Ortega said: 'I am sure Simeone will really be up for the two games against United. Beckham will have a difficult job on his hands as Diego is Inter's playmaker.'

MATCH PREVIEW *** FIXTURES ON 19/12/98 *** Chelsea v Tottenham Hotspur Coventry City v Derby County Liverpool v Sheffield Wednesday Manchester United v Middlesbrough Newcastle United v Leicester City Nottingham Forest v Blackburn Rovers Southampton v Wimbledon West Ham United v Everton *** FIXTURES ON 20/12/98 *** Arsenal v Leeds United United prepare to give Robson tough welcome back By Ossian Shine LONDON, Dec 18 - Manchester United welcome their old hero Bryan Robson back to Old Trafford on Saturday hoping to beat his under-strength Middlesbrough side and knock Aston Villa off the top of the English premier league. United, in second place two points behind Villa despite drawing their last three league matches, have only lost once in their last 24 league games against Boro but will be without striker Dwight Yorke. The 12.6 million pounds ($21 million) summer signing from Villa injured his groin in the midweek 1-1 draw with Chelsea. But United, who face Middlesbrough again in the F.A. Cup third round at Old Trafford in two week's time, can call on a wealth of international talent and should now pair England striker Teddy Sheringham with the ever-present Andy Cole. Manager Alex Ferguson's other option is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The Norwegian marksman bagged both United's goals in their 2-2 draw with Tottenham last weekend. While Ferguson has few selection problems, his former captain at United and now Middlesbrough boss Bryan Robson is struggling. Influential midfielder Paul Gascoigne is suspended and fifth-placed Boro have doubts over the injured Curtis Fleming, Gianluca Festa, Brian Deane, Phils Stamp and Mark Summerbell. Chelsea, though, also have a chance to top the table. Gianluca Vialli's men face fellow Londoners Tottenham at Stamford Bridge and the omens look good. Chelsea have not lost since the first day of the season when they went down to Coventry -- 16 matches ago. And they have not lost to Tottenham in their last 16 encounters. Tottenham manager George Graham, who played for Chelsea for two seasons in the mid-1960s, will not let omens or records bother him, though. The tough Scot has galvanised Spurs since taking over from Swiss Christian Gross in September and their huge improvement was best illustrated last week when they trailed Manchester United 2-0 with 20 minutes to go before forcing a 2-2 draw.

Subject: Van der saar, team news VAN'S YOUR MAN SAYS STAM By David Anderson, PA Sport Jaap Stam believes his Dutch team-mate Edwin van der Saar would be the best replacement for Peter Schmeichel. Manchester United are scouring the world for a new goalkeeper following Schmeichel's shock announcement that he would be leaving Old Trafford at the end of the season. Stam is a huge fan of Van der Saar and he claims the Ajax goalkeeper would be keen to join United. "The player I think would make the best replacement for Peter is my international team-mate, Ajax's Edwin van der Saar," he said. "When I met up with the Dutch team in November for our game with Germany, Edwin and I talked about Peter leaving and he joked with me that I should mention his name to Alex Ferguson. "I think he is very interested in coming to United and he would be a fine keeper for us. "The manager hasn't asked me about him and I have no plans to tell him who he should buy, but I know they have watched him several times. They know what a good goalkeeper he is," he told the official Manchester United magazine. Ajax, though, are determined to hold on to Van der Saar and have issued a 'hands off' warning to United. United are anxious to keep themselves covered whoever they bring in and Schmeichel's understudy Raimond van der Gouw has signed a new two-year GAZZA MISSES BORO'S THEATRE TRIP By Ian Rodgers, PA Sport Middlesbrough will be without suspended Paul Gascoigne for their FA Cup dress rehearsal against Manchester United at Old Trafford. The England international won the Man of the Match award in last week's 1-0 win over West Ham to prove that he was heading back to his best after his recent off-field troubles. But, after collecting his eighth booking of the season, Gascoigne serves a one-game ban, with former Southampton midfielder Neil Maddison set to take over. Gianluca Festa is in line for a dramatic comeback after a shoulder injury, while Danish international Mikkel Beck will figure in the attack if Brian Deane is ruled out with ankle trouble. But manager Bryan Robson knows his side will have their work cut out to contain a United side intent on making up for conceding a late equaliser against Chelsea on Wednesday night. "At the start of the season I said Manchester United and Chelsea would set the standard we have to strive for and be the teams to beat," Robson said. Gary Pallister returns to his former club after impressing following knee surgery. Curtis Fleming missed the victory over West Ham with a knee problem but is expected to be fit. United boss Alex Ferguson is sweating on the fitness of Dwight Yorke. The star striker is receiving intensive treatment in a bid to be fit for tomorrow's game after being substituted in the second half of the 1-1 draw against Chelsea. It was a another blow for United's record signing following his return to the side after missing Saturday's match at Tottenham with a thigh problem.

Chelsea are currently three points behind Villa with an identical goal difference. Villa visit strugglers Charlton on Monday. Champions Arsenal welcome their former stalwart David O'Leary back to Highbury when the Leeds manager brings his exciting fourth-placed side to London on Sunday. Arsenal, in sixth place and without a win in five league matches, need to kick-start their season after a disappointing show in the European Champions' League if they are to keep pace with the top three. Captain and key defender Tony Adams is still out of Arsene Wenger's side with a back injury. O'Leary reports no injury worries and should name most of the side that has won five of their last six premier league matches. Elsewhere on Saturday, Coventry host Derby County, Sheffield Wednesday travel to Liverpool while Newcastle entertain Leicester. Bottom-of-the-league Southampton welcome Wimbledon, Everton and West Ham clash at Upton Park and Blackburn Rovers visit Nottingham Forest.
