Barry Daily Comment:
CHAMPIONS LEAGUE WILL GROW AND GROW
Europe's top clubs have agreed to increase the Champions League from 24 to 32 teams, ending
the immediate threat of a traitorous cartel of Europe's finest setting up a breakaway Super
League with an exclusive TV deal.
Manchester United, Real Madrid and Inter Milan were among 14 of Europe's self-styled big boys
who agreed to increase the current 24-team format, urging Uefa to launch the expanded
competition next season. Real Madrid, AC Milan, Bayern Munich, Porto and Marseille will
discuss details of the changes with Uefa, who will fine-tune the plan, and settle the fate of
the Cup Winners Cup in December.

Subject: Scholes out of England match
LONDON, Nov 17 - Manchester United's Paul Scholes on Tuesday became the lastest striker to be
ruled out of England's friendly with the Czech Repbublic.
Scholes has not overcome a hamstring strain and is definitely out of Wednesday's game at
Wembley.
Also out are Alan Shearer and Teddy Sheringham, while Emile Heskey is very doubtful.
The injury list means an almost certain start for Dion Dublin with Ian Wright and Paul Merson,
who both missed training with slight knocks on Tuesday, also hoping to play.

Subject: Hoddle: I will take Beckham to task
Tuesday, November 17, 1998
Glenn Hoddle will hold another heart-to-heart with David Beckham about the player's behaviour -
a move that is set to reignite the war of words between the England coach and Manchester
United boss Alex Ferguson.
Hoddle plans to speak to Beckham before England's international against the Czech Republic at
Wembley tomorrow in another attempt to curb the excesses in his game.
At Old Trafford on Saturday, Beckham was involved in an incident with Tim Sherwood that saw the
Blackburn Rovers captain sent off for illegal use of his elbow. After being tripped by
Sherwood, Beckham got to his feet and ran towards him in retaliation, only to be poleaxed.
Already the Manchester United star has received one red and four yellow cards in 19 games for
his country and Hoddle said: 'I will be speaking to him about what happened. There is still an
element that can be improved on and he has got to deal with it. But I don't think he is a
marked man. I believe he has been given a fair crack of the whip and that he has been left
alone.
'There is a lot of pressure on him but he's trying to improve and that is the main thing. He is
trying to deal with the situation and he wants to put it right. I see great performances from
him and the positive thing is that he is making goals and scoring them, too.
'I haven't spoken to Alex Ferguson about it. I will talk with David myself, but the more talk
there is about the problem, the more pressure there is likely to be on him.'
Beckham has been the victim of a hate campaign ever since he was sent off against Argentina in
the World Cup last summer. That followed two other incidents while playing for England that
suggested his temper is on a permanent short fuse.
He was booked during Le Tournoi last year after refusing to leave the pitch on a stretcher
after being injured. Then, during England's World Cup warm-up in Casablanca, he tried to
manhandle the referee in the drawn match against Belgium.
Already this season he has served one European ban - and it appears the penny has still not
dropped.
But Ferguson may not take kindly to the fact that Hoddle is still concerned about Beckham's
behaviour and plans to speak to the player before seeking his club manager's opinion.

Former Stars Ready For Some 'Sixy' Football
And You Can Win Tickets To Be There To See It
SOME of the biggest names of the 1970s and 1980s
will be on show in Manchester on Thursday night
when they contest the Masters League Football
Tournament - a six-a-side event which is being held
at the Manchester Evening News Arena. Stars from
Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City and
Arsenal will be taking part in the event and it
promises to be what people in the PR game would
call 'a feast of fun and football'.
Alan Kennedy will be lining up for Liverpool
alongside the likes of Phil Neal, Mark Lawrenson,
Jan Molby and John Aldridge and he can't wait for
the action to start: "It should be an excellent night
and I'm really pleased that the PFA have organised
this event. It's hoped that there will be several
more around the country during the course of the
season, and it's just a pity these events weren't
going on a few years ago. You have to be over 35
to play, so for me it's come nine years too late! It's
great to see old friends because we don't get that
many chances to get together but it will be very
serious on the pitch. The Liverpool side has just
started up so, while we might be favourites on
paper, it might be a different story once we get out
on the pitch."
The event is taking place this Thursday, November
19, and tickets are available from Ticketmaster, the
MEN Arena and selected outlets of HMV in
Manchester, Sheffield, Liverpool, Stockport,
Chester and Leeds. They are priced at £10 each,
with £8 concessions. There are also a limited
number of VIP tickets, priced £15. For more info,
call the Manchester Evening News Arena on 0161
930 8000.
AND HERE'S WHERE YOU WIN TICKETS!...
We've got ten pairs to give away and all you have
to do is answer this insultingly simple question:
Against which team did Alan Kennedy score the
winning goal in Liverpool's 1-0 European Cup Final
win in 1981? E-mail your answer to us at
TheEditor@football365.co.uk. Get your answer in
by 1pm on Wednesday afternoon. The winners will
be informed by e-mail and the tickets will be left on
the door of the arena for collection on the night.
