The Manchester United star now believes that his France 98 dream is over before it ever began and is bitter and hurt by Hoddle's sudden rejection. Beckham, shocked and confused after being dumped against Tunisia, said: "I was devastated when the manager told me. "He announced it in front of the rest of the team and I was really hurt. I felt this feeling coming up in my stomach, my insides were turning over and over so many times. It was an unbelievable sensation. "I tried hard to hide my feelings because it happened in front of everybody, but it wasn't easy. Then we went straight into an afternoon training session and I had to carry on." In the most emotional interview Beckham has ever given, he added: "I've had a few days to think about things, but it isn't easy because I can't really figure out what went wrong. I know the manager picks his final 11 and sticks with it and there is nothing I can do or say about it, because it's his choice." Beckham's sinking feeling returned when he sat with the substitutes before the start of the opening game. He said: "Standing there by the bench and listening as the team sang the national anthem was just as hard as when I was told I was not in the squad. It's so difficult not to be involved. "It would have been nice to come on for five or 10 minutes at the end. It's particularly upsetting because I played in every game leading up to the World Cup Finals." But Beckham gave Darren Anderton credit for a good display in the right wing-back spot that seemed guaranteed to be his. He said: "Yeh, Darren did well. All the midfield did well against Tunisia. But, hopefully, I'll get a game."

Barcelona head the queue of clubs tracking the Fiorentina star and could swing the deal by using World Cup defender Sergi as bait to the Italians. The report claims United have offered 10 million to the Florence club in a straight cash deal while Real Betis have emerged as a late bidder. Winger Offer Set To Fail United have reportedly made a move for Inter Milan winger Francesco Moriero, although the Italian World Cup star looks set to agree a new deal to stay in Serie A. The 28-year-old was the right-sided star of Inter's march to the UEFA Cup final and a place in next season's Champions' League, attracting major interest. But, despite United's offer of 3.5 million and roughly 1 million-a-season in wages to the ex-Roma player he seems set to sign an extension to his contract at the San Siro.
