"Football taught by Matt Busby"

From: Ethel Sleith Subject: England's finest? This little table comes from the last issue of the official club magazine, and I'm amazed that no one's posted it here yet. It breaks down the strike rate of all the players Hoddle rates above Andy. Read em, Glenn, and weep. Gregory is furious over stories linking £15million Yorke with Old Trafford and is determined to flush out the true strength of the United's interest. He wants United to put their money on the table - or back away now. Gregory blasted: "Surely it would be much better if United made a positive approach for Dwight, because at least we would then know exactly what is going on. "I just wish the people concerned could come clean about their real intentions rather than shadow box all the time." And he warned Alex Ferguson that the 26-year-old striker cannot be bought on the cheap. Villa have already offered Yorke £25,000 a week to stay, although their top scorer is expected to demand nearer £40,000 in exchange for signing a new five-year contract. Gregory would prefer to sell Villa's controversial £7million record buy Stan Collymore at a big loss instead. He said: "The situation surrounding Dwight worries me. "Dwight is a level-headed sort of bloke, but this constant speculation linking him with United is bound to be unsettling. It doesn't help anyone at the club, because the fear is that Dwight might end up wanting to go to Old Trafford." Gregory, who suspects that unseen forces are attempting to pave the way towards Yorke moving North, added: "The whole business might wreck my pre-season plans. "The only thing which can stop Dwight wondering what lies round the next corner is if Alex Ferguson pays Fiorentina £14 million for Argentina's Gabriel Batistuta. "Personally, I'd like that to happen tomorrow. Then I can get on with the job of negotiating a long-term deal to put Dwight, and Villa's supporters, in a happier frame of mind." Gregory is continuing talks with Mark Bosnich, Mark Draper, Riccardo Scimeca and Gary Charles, whose contracts expire in 12 months. Leicester manager Martin O'Neill turned tradition on its head last night - by giving his new chairman a vote of confidence! After John Elsom assumed power after yet another shake-up at Filbert Street, O'Neill said: "This is someone I can work with. "Mr. Elsom gave me valuable support in the past when it was not always forthcoming from other people I could name." O'Neill was close to joining Everton during a summer of infighting at Leicester. But he said: "I'm happier now that the suggestion of my becoming merely one member of a five-strong committee to run this football club has been scrapped "I am not a committee man by nature. Any situation where my total control of playing matters might be eroded was bound to produce deep concerns on my part."

He is the fifth signing of Dick Advocaat, Rangers' new coach, and it takes Advocaat's spending to more than £20 million since he succeeded Walter Smith at Ibrox. Kanchelskis, 29, who moved from Fiorentina in Italy, will be used in a creative midfield role, helping to fill the gap left by the departures of Paul Gascoigne to Middlesbrough and Brian Laudrup to Chelsea. Advocaat completed the deal, with the player signing a four-year contract, shortly before deadline for him to be able to play in European competition. "It was vital we got Andrei because we were missing someone who can play on the right side," Advocaat said. "Like the other new players here, he is of the highest quality. He is fast, skilful and very experienced. Hopefully, he will live up to our expectations." After five years with United, Kanchelskis moved to Goodison Park for £5 million in August 1995. Although he scored 20 goals in 52 league matches for Everton, he left for Fiorentina for £8 million in January 1997. "I'm very happy to be in Glasgow," he said. "Rangers are one of the best clubs in Europe and the coach and chairman were both very keen for me to sign." Advocaat has also paid more than £5 million this summer for Arthur Numan and Giovanni van Bronckhorst, the Holland internationals.
