Robson plans reunion with Pallister
Wednesday, April 15, 1998
Bryan Robson is preparing a summer move for Middlesbrough old boy Gary
Pallister in the knowledge that Manchester United are closing in on Dutch
international target Jaap Stam.
Pallister could find himself on the fringes at Old Trafford once manager
Alex Ferguson wraps up a deal for Stam, who is valued at £15million by PSV
Eindhoven. United are believed to have offered £10m which would be a world
record for a defender.
Pallister has proved one of Ferguson's best buys. He moved from Teesside for
£2.3m nine years ago and, after a hesitant start, matured into an
inspirational central defender for United and England.
Robson, hopeful of guiding Middlesbrough back to the Premiership in the
coming weeks, sees 32-year-old Pallister, his former Old Trafford team-mate,
as a man to help cement their top-flight place next season. Ferguson will be
in no rush to let Pallister go and the loyal defender wouldill be due a
testimonial next year if he remained at the club. But with Stam's expected
arrival Pallister could find his first-team opportunities limited.
Just as Steve Bruce was allowed to accept a lucrative offer from Birmingham
in 1996, Ferguson would not stand in Pallister's way although the United
boss would be looking for fee of around £1m-£1.5m.

PSV agree £9m deal for Stam
BY DAVID MADDOCK DIRECTORS at PSV Eindhoven have finally relented and
agreed to sell Jaap Stam, the Holland international, to Manchester United.
A deal could be completed by the end of the week.
The Dutch club held a board meeting yesterday to decide the future of their
25-year-old defender. After a lengthy debate, it was agreed to accept, in
principle, United's offer of £9 million.
The directors will hold further talks with the player this week, but it
seems that the decision to sell has been taken. Last night, a spokesman
suggested that the money offered by the English champions was too much to
turn down.
"Of course we want to keep Stam, but we don't want to force a player to
stay against his will," he said. "There is little point in trying to keep
him if he wants to go to Manchester United. We are a normal club and Stam
is not a difficult person, so we will not stand in his way. It might be
different if United had not made such a good."
The transfer fee - a world record for a defender - will represent a profit
of £8 million for PSV in two years. He was signed from Willem II for £1
million at the end of 1995.
Stam has won 12 caps for Holland after making his debut as a substitute
against Germany in 1996. He was voted Dutch player of the year last season
and is tipped to become one of the stars of the World Cup finals in France
this summer. The player reaffirmed his desire to join United yesterday
after the board meeting and suggested that a deal will now be agreed
quickly, although he will not complete the move until after the World Cup.
"I have had talks and I think things will go through," he said. "There will
be further talks in the week to discuss details."
It is thought that PSV want the meeting with the player to discuss the
suggestion that he might waive his right to 15 per cent of the transfer
fee, which he is entitled to under the terms of his contract. That would
cost the player £1.5 million, but would appease PSV, who originally wanted
£15 million for him.
There are still some details to iron out, notably United's suggestion that
Jordi Cruyff could be included as a makeweight in the deal, but that is
thought to be unlikely, as is the possibility of court action by Stam.
Under Dutch law, if PSV prevent him from accepting better employment, he
could sue, but that will not now happen, according to the spokesman,
because of the decision to sell.

Fellow Reds,
Just a couple of points I want to make
1. Arsenal have NOT yet won the premiership title, even though
things look pretty rosy for Wenger and co. right now.
Championship form can be regarded as two points per game, United
are currently one point behind that rate, Arsenal are two points
ahead. If their two games in hand yield four points then it takes
one slip, one unexpected Arsenal defeat, for us to get ahead on goal
difference. Of course we do need to win the four remaining games
and that could be tough if Giggs and Johnsen are out for the
remaining games. Remember its never over 'til its over, we have
seen enough United games in recent years to know its usually
a red shirted roller coaster ride.
2. IF we dont retain our title, I feel uncanny similarities to 1995
when we lacked, through suspension, the guidance and inspiration
of a certain enigmatic frenchman and ended up falling
at a couple of final hurdles to finish without the league or cup.
3. To Martin Edwards and the PLC. Stop trying to achieve a European
cup winning side on a shoestring budget. Alex Ferguson deserves
better support than this. Stump up the money to buy Jaap Stam
and up the salaries while you are at it, so we can keep our
home grown talent as well as attract the world's best to
complement them. This is not to condone a mad buy buy buy frenzy but
lets ensure we have the real strength in depth we need for
the next time an injury crisis comes our way.
As for possible signings, we have all summer to speculate !
4. Looking forward to the World cup :)

A Press Release dropped through my door this morning, it reads:
"United Calypso"
This summer's official Manchester United single, by the fans - for the
fans! Now where have I heard that last phrase before - UbF perhaps.
It goes on:
"United Calypso '98" features real Manchester United fans (Reds United)
singing an infectiously catchy pop song - a sizzling new 90s version of a
classic song, the "Manchester United Calypso", originally recorded in 1954
but revived on the terraces this season following a TV documentary about
United's legendary Busby Babes.
"Reds United comprises a crowd of 40 devoted Manchester United fans from
all over the UK who won their place at the recording by singing their
hearts out down the phone lines in a series of press and broadcast
competitions.
"With Manchester United on course for an unprecedented Premiership
hat-trick, fan excitement will be at boiling point."
With United in line for an unprecedented second second place fan
excitem, ent has now gone completely off the boil, the pan taken off the
burner, washed up and put back in the cupboard until August.
The above press release makes me long for the club to be marketed by people
who actually know what Manchester United is all about.

Has anyone noticed how fergie's favourite phrase is "no question bout that".
MINEFIELD!
One wrong step will blow Reds' title hopes apart
By Stuart Mathieson
Warning...Alex Ferguson
MANCHESTER United are walking into a Premiership minefield.
And boss Alex Ferguson today warned that another wrong step will blow the
Reds' title hopes apart.
The United manager has set his players a 12-point maximum from their final
four matches of the season to give them a fighting chance of an historic
third successive League Championship.
``If we drop any more points then it has gone,'' Fergie declares.
``We have to win our remaining four matches there is no question about
that. The players are well capable of doing. We are happy in the knowledge
that we can do it.
``If we don't win all four then I don't think we deserve to win the title.
I am not putting undue pressure on the players. It's just being realistic.
They know the situation at this time of the year.
``Arsenal are not looking like they are going to drop points but we must
keep up the pressure. Things could change.''
Fergie's 79-point target sets new title favourites Arsenal the task of
taking 14 points from their final six matches. United have to play
Newcastle at Old Trafford this Saturday, travel to Crystal Palace nine days
later. They return home to play Leeds United before the final Sunday match
at Barnsley. The Reds are set to have Ryan Giggs and Ronny Johnsen fit to
play at Selhurst Park a week next Monday.
Defender Johnsen had been written off for the season after an ankle
ligament against Liverpool on Good Friday and Giggs had to be withdrawn
before half time with a recurrence of his hamstring trouble.
``Thankfully neither are as bad as we first thought,'' confirms Ferguson.
United are still awaiting news from PSV Eindhoven following their record
bid for defender Jaap Stam. PSV will hold further talks before the weekend
with the 25-year-old when the club's director of football Frank Arnesen
returns from South America.
A Manchester United is for life, not just for christmas.
