I'll settle for losing 3-0 tomororw and a 1-0 win on Weds rather than a 3-0 win tomorrow and a 1-1 draw on Weds. Hopefully, we'll win both about 7-0. PARIS (Mar 13, 1998 - 17:48 EST) - Metz consolidated their lead with a 1-0 win at Montpellier as Monaco virtually lost all chance of retaining the French first division championship after a 3-1 defeat at Auxerre on Friday. AJ Auxerre striker Steve Marlet scored once in each half as Monaco, who play Manchester United in the second leg of their European Cup quarter-final at Old Trafford on Wednesday, fell 3-0 behind after 65 minutes. Midfielder Sabri Lamouchi scored Auxerre's other goal as the 1996 champions notched up a morale boosting win ahead of the home leg of their UEFA Cup quarter-final against Lazio on Tuesday. "I'm happy to have scored again after such a long time," said Marlet, who last found the net in December in the second leg of Auxerre's UEFA Cup third round match at home to Twente Enschede. "This puts us back in the fight for European places and sets us up for Tuesday's match." Auxerre coach Guy Roux said the victory was good for his team's morale as Lazio had won their Italian Cup semifinal on Wednesday. "We'd be down if we'd lost or drawn. So this was a good night's work," he said. Stephane Guivarc'h, the division's top scorer, was surprisingly not among the scorers, turning provider instead by laying on both Marlet's goals. His fellow French international striker David Trezeguet, back from injury, scored a consolation goal for the champions. Auxerre's reserve goalkeeper Fabien Cool, who came on in the second half for injured French international Lionel Charbonnier, made several good saves to keep Monaco scoreless until Trezeguet's 77th-minute strike. Monaco's already long injury list increased early in the match when midfielder Sylvain Legwinski had to come off after a knock on the knee. ++++++=========+++++++========+++++++++========++++++++

The Gunners, who have three games in hand, closed the gap with an 80th-minute goal from Dutchman Overmars. On a terrible day for United, goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel tore his hamstring and will miss Wednesday's European Cup quarter-final second leg against Monaco. Schmeichel insisted on joining in the late search for an equaliser. After contesting a United corner, he was in the process of chasing back when he pulled up sharply and could be out for five weeks. With additional injuries to Ryan Giggs, Gary Pallister, Nicky Butt, Ronny Johnsen and Phillip Neville, United manager Alex Ferguson admitted: 'I will have to rethink my plans for the game against Monaco. 'There is a chance for Butt and I may have to risk Giggs. But the others are all doubtful.' Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger still thinks United are favourites for the Premiership title. He said: 'Manchester United remain in the best position. 'They did not lose the championship with this result. But for the very first time the situation is in our own hands. We do not have to rely on their bad results.' Ferguson added: 'It was a major disappointment and a bad result. Arsenal deserved it. But circumstances were piled high against us.' (PA) X-MIME-Autoconverted: from quoted-printable to 8bit by eris.web-plus.dk id OAA06510 FERGUSON PLAYING THOSE MIND GAMES By David Anderson, PA Sport And so the title race is back on. Marc Overmars' strike at Old Trafford has guaranteed a pulsating end to an already memorable season. Arsenal are now just six points behind leaders Manchester United and have three games in hand. United boss Alex Ferguson, who is a veteran of the last six championship battles, refused to say who the smart money would be on now, but he feels the result increases the pressure on Arsenal. He fired another shot in his battle of minds with Gunners boss Arsene Wenger when he claimed they will no longer benefit from being out of the penetrating glare of the title spotlight. Ferguson also pointed out that Arsenal have 10 league games and the small matter of an FA Cup quarter-final replay against West Ham to squeeze into the remaining weeks of the season. "We're in a situation now that we're used to so it's not as if we're unaccustomed to it," he said. "Over the last six years we've had to battle hard for the championship. "On some occasions we've won in the last few weeks and some on the last day. But no matter how it's done, we've found our way quite well. "Four out of six and second in the other two championships is magnificent consistent form. "Arsenal have been afforded the great pleasure of being behind four or five teams with everybody writing them off. "Arsenal have not been under any pressure. They have been coasting along behind everyone, now they've come with a run and they're in a position now that every mistake they make will cost them. "They have to win their games in hand and they'll find out now how difficult it is." United have taken just one point out of their last nine and injuries are a major factor behind that. Peter Schmeichel could be out for five weeks with a torn hamstring, but Ferguson is optimistic most of the others will be off the casualty list in time for their next Premiership match against Wimbledon in a fortnight. Ronny Johnsen (calf), Phil Neville (hamstring), Ryan Giggs (hamstring), Gary Pallister (back) and Nicky Butt (calf) should all be back. "We're feeling the pinch in terms of injuries, but by March 28 I would think that Giggs would be back, Pallister would be back and Butt will be better," he said. "Then we will be able to get back to the balance and penetration which has made us so successful this season. "At the moment I'm not having the same penetration with the midfield I'm having to play. "I'm having to change all the time, which is not the type of situation you want, particularly in the big games. "You want to be able to say this is Manchester United - beat this team, but we're not able to do that at the moment." Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira believes the title pendulum has swung in their direction. He feels the victory was a massive result, but he acknowledges that games in hand are not the same as points in the bag. "Psychologically now we have the advantage," said the Frenchman. "But even before the kick-off we felt we had it because we had won the first match 3-2 at Highbury. "When you take six points off Manchester United, that can make the difference, especially when last season we didn't take a single point against them. "Even though we have three games in hand we know that is not as good as nine points. We now have to carry on with the same spirit, which we showed on Saturday." © PA Sporting Life Marcus Lionel van Geyzel. Schmeichel, who minutes earlier had conceded the only goal of the English premier league game, raced upfield in the closing stages of the match to join the United attack at a corner. After the ball was cleared he stayed in the Arsenal goalmouth waiting for a second cross into the box but when that was cleared by the Arsenal defence he raced back to his own goal. He got as far as the halfway line before pulling up clutching his leg. United manager Alex Ferguson said afterwards: "There was nothing wrong with Peter coming up for the corner, he has often done that before when we have been losing. "But his mistake was staying in the box for the second ball. When they broke, he had to chase back and although he's a fast, fit player, he pulled his hamstring. The injury is likely to keep him out for five weeks and he is definitely out of Wednesday's match against Monaco. It is a blow for us, there is no doubt about that." United's reserve goalkeeper Raimond Van der Gouw, the veteran Dutch international, will replace the Dane in goal for Wednesday's European Cup game which is crucial after the first leg in Monaco last week ended 0-0.
