11/121909: George Roughton born in Manchester. A pacy Full-back, Roughton made his
United debut against Manchester City in September 1936, and in his second season
helped United win promotion. His career was truncated by the war, and he made
92 appearances between 1936-39.
1982: United beat Notts County 4-0 at Old Trafford in a Division 1 game watched
by 33,618. Mike Duxbury, Bryan Robson, Frank Stapleton and Norman Whiteside
got the goals. Team was: Bailey, Duxbury, Albiston, Moses, Moran, McQueen,
Robson (Grimes), Muhren, Stapleton, Whiteside, Coppell.

Webmasters Bill and Barry are both attending Tottenham v Manchester United and
will therefore meet for the first time! We have known each other on the net for
2 or so years but never met before due to the long distances Toronto-Denmark.

Subject: Give us a Break Pleads Ferguson
Alex Ferguson has called for a mid-season break as he
fears injuries could wreck Manchester United's chances of
Champions' League glory. United booked their place in the
quarter-finals after a draw against Bayern Munich at Old
Trafford was enough to see them through as one of the two
best runners-up. United have emerged unbeaten from Group D
- the so-called group of death - after banging in a record
20 goals in their six games. Last season United romped
through the group stage only for their assault on the big
prize to be derailed by injuries. Ferguson is mindful of
this and he said: "Come March a lot of things come into
play and I hope I have the same squad to pick from.
"I would be delighted to be in that position as it is
important to have all your players." Some of United's
Champions' League rivals will benefit from a mid-season
break in their preparations for the quarter-finals and
Ferguson feels that should be extended to the Premiership.
"Some of the teams like Dynamo Kiev can go for a break now
and get their injuries sorted out," he said. "They will go
on a nice wee trip to the Canary Islands, while we are
battling through the winter. "I think we should take a leaf
out of Scotland's book and take a January break. "On pure
ability I would be quite confident about our chances, but
come March I hope that ability and freshness will still be
there. "We've got seven games in December and that taxes
you. You just hope that you come through without any
injuries."
Ferguson has been linked with a fresh move for Lens
midfielder Marc-Vivien Foe, who was set to move to Old
Trafford until he broke his leg before the World Cup, but
when asked if he would be bringing in any new faces for the
quarter-finals Ferguson replied: "It's difficult to say,
but I think our squad is not too bad." Roy Keane had fired
United ahead two minutes before the interval but a
defensive lapse allowed Hasan Salihamidzic to equalise
after 56 minutes. Bayern qualified as the Group winners and
coach Ottmar Hitzfeld would like to meet United in May's
final in Barcelona.
"I think both teams deserve to be in the quarter-finals
because of the way they have played in the Group," he said.
"I'm pleased for Alex Ferguson, whom I have a good
relationship with and perhaps we will meet in the final."

Looking at the above table of qualifiers, I'm not sure who I'd like us
to get in the quarters. Looking at their form, possibly Juve, would
be the best bet. But they, like us, didn't loose a game in the league
stage so it might not be that easy. The other obvious option is
Olympiakos. Guess we'll just have to wait and see who we pull out of
the hat.
Euro glory : it's still a long way to go, but let's hope for the best!

Subject: Great United Songs
Having had a few enquiries about this wonderful product, I thought I'd
better explain exactly what it is. Great United Songs is a 36 page
publication containing over 80 songs going back over 40 years. Just a
small sample of some of the classics included inside are:
Flowers Of Manchester
Stretford Ender
The Second Was Scored By Wee Georgie Best
There Is A Plaque At Man United (amazing)
One Day On The Dark Streets Of Belfast
Forever And Ever (All 7 verses)
And a whole host of others, short and long, old and new. There are also
articles by Richard Kurt, Pete Boyle, Howard (and me!), and although I
could be seen to be biased, it is a fantastic publication. Now more
than ever it is essential that these songs are not lost forever, and are
kept within the folklore of United. It is these songs and these
memories that make Manchester United what they are (but are in grave
danger of losing) and they should be kept going. Feedback from people
so far has been overwhelmingly positive, and I really do think that this
is a worthwhile purchase.
The publication sells for one uk pound, although I am not sure what the
score is with regard to postage worldwide, but would imagine it would
make sense to order in some kind of bulk. Perhaps anyone involved in
their national supporters branch could ask around and see what sort of
numbers are involved. Anyway, have a think anyone who wants one, and
mail me privately and I will see what I can do for you...

Subject: EVERTON FULL-BACK TO BE SIGNED IN TIME FOR THE QUARTER-FINALS

MANCHESTER UNITED are poised to add Everton's England Under-21 left-back
Michael Ball to their Champions League campaign. Old Trafford boss Alex
Ferguson, whose side qualified from the group stage of Europe's premier
tournament on Wednesday night, sees the 19-year-old as the ideal replacement
for 33-year-old Denis Irwin.
Football365 understands that a £6.5m fee has already been discussed and a deal is
expected to be finalised well before the Champions League transfer deadline on
January 31, making the defender eligible to play in the quarter-finals. The move would
anger disgruntled Everton fans still furious over the sale of terrace hero Duncan
Ferguson, particularly as the Ball transfer is believed to have been sanctioned by former
chairman Peter Johnson at the same time as he agreed to let the big Scotsman move to
Newcastle.
Ball, a true-blue Evertonian, only recently signed a new five-year
contract at Goodison Park and is said to have turned down
approaches from Arsenal, Newcastle and Rangers. However, it is
thought that the well-documented financial pressure on the club -
plus the undoubted lure of Old Trafford and top-class European
football - will see the deal go through.
For United, the swoop signals not only Ferguson's determination to
continue his side's domination into the new Millennium, but also the
end of Irwin's hugely successful spell at Old Trafford. The news will
come as a bigger shock, however, to Phil Neville, who must have
thought he was next in line for the left-back slot and may now find
himself the subject of a renewed bid from Middlesbrough, who tried
to sign him in the summer.

Subject: CHAMPIONS LEAGUE PLANS CONFIRMED
The Champions League was yesterday formally increased to 32 teams at a meeting of European
football's governing body UEFA. It was also confirmed that the UEFA Cup and the European Cup
Winners' Cup will be merged into one tournament from next season. Both switches had been
expected as UEFA revamped its plans following threats by leading clubs to break away and form a
rebel competition if changes were not made.
UEFA confirmed the Champions League will now be contested by 32 teams instead of 24 and that
matches will be played on Wednesday and Thursday nights. The defending European
champions and the champions and runners-up in Europe's top leagues - Italy, Germany, Spain,
France, Netherlands and England - will all be assured of places in the new Champions League,
along with the champions of Portugal, Greece and the Czech Republic.
The third and fourth placed teams in the Italian, German and Spanish leagues and the third-placed
teams in the French, Dutch and English championships will all enter the new tournament at
the third qualifying round, along with the runners-up in the Portuguese, Greek and Czech
leagues, and the champions of Norway, Austria, Russia, Croatia, Turkey and Denmark. Champions
of other European countries, along with certain runners-up, will contest the first two qualifying
rounds. The new-look UEFA Cup will be contested on Tuesday nights.
The 1999-2000 schedule, as released by UEFA, is:

First qualifying round: July 14 and 21
Second qualifying round: July 28 and Aug 4
Third qualifying round: Aug 11 and Aug 25
First round (Eight groups of four teams): To be
contested on Wednesdays and Thursdays:
September 15 and 16, 22 and 23, 29 and 30,
October 20 and 21, 27 and 28 October, November 3 and 4
Second round (Four groups of four): November 24
and 25, December 8 and 9, March 1 and 2, 8 and 9,
15 and 16, 22 and 23.

OF COURSE United can win the Champions League.
Why not? Because they're fragile at the back?
Yeah, maybe they are sometimes susceptible to
swift counter-attacks and you could certainly argue
a case about their concentration levels in the games
at Bayern Munich and Barcelona, but have you seen
them going forward?
United weren't at their best against Bayern at Old
Trafford on Wednesday, but they still had several
good chances to have wrapped the game up before
Salihamidzic equalised. Either Andy Cole or Dwight
Yorke could have given them the lead in only the
fifth minute, twice Cole was desperately unlucky to
send efforts inches past the post and Ronny
Johnsen should have scored with at least one of his
clear-cut openings immediately after half-time.
Surely if the Norwegian had been on the pitch more
than a few seconds he would have done.
Some people are claiming that they aren't good
enough to conquer Europe because the only team
they beat in Group D was Brondby. Yes, but
Brondby beat Bayern, so what does that say about
them? It's no good talking about form, current or
otherwise, because all that will have changed by
the time the quarter-finals start in March.
The bottom line, in my mind anyway, is that United
have scored 20 goals in six European games - a
new Champions League record - and emerged
unbeaten from the so-called 'Group of Death'. It
sounds obvious, but goals win matches and United
are bloody good at scoring goals. After all, if they
had met Bayern in the knock-out stages of the
competition, then a 2-2 draw in Germany and a 1-1
draw at Old Trafford would have been enough to
take them through on the away goals rule. And
that's why being able to score plenty of goals is
arguably more important in Europe than being able
to keep clean sheets.
If you look at the teams left in the competition,
United should fear no-one. They're all good sides,
but none of them are great. Nor are United. But
when the European Cup is handed over at the end
of May, I see no reason why it should not be Roy
Keane who collects it.
'No, They Can't'
Says Howard Johnson
MORE'S the pity that United can't claim Europe's
greatest prize but, until they can perform not only
excitingly, but with ruthless efficiency, then Alex
Ferguson's side will always self-destruct when it
really matters.
Yes, United have scored 20 goals in Europe this
season, but the real story is told in the goals against
column. Six conceded in two games against
Barcelona - even without Kluivert. Three against
Bayern Munich. Even two against Brondby. That's
11 goals in their six games. Look at the goals
conceded by the rest of the qualifiers - Real Madrid
have let in eight (the most goals conceded by any
one of the seven remaining sides). Dynamo Kiev
have shipped seven. Bayern, Kaiserslautern and
Olympiakos have let in just six. Juventus and Inter,
meanwhile, have conceded a paltry five. The
evidence is clear that, when the giants of European
football meet head-to-head, where mistakes are at
an absolute premium, the key to winning trophies
is, above all, not to concede.
In the Premiership, where defences are
considerably more naive than in Europe, United's
swashbuckling approach generally carries the day.
And it makes for exciting, scintillating football. But
put United up against Inter, against Juventus,
against German champions Kaiserslautern, and
they are simply not going to walk three goals in.
United simply won't be able to pick themselves up
after conceding early, dust themselves down and
get straight up the other end to bang in an
equaliser. That's so naive as only to be worthy of
Sunday League footballers. Big European games
are won by the slightest of margins. Just look at the
record books - it's the team that makes the fewest
errors that carries the day. United are too slipshod
at the back to be taken seriously as potential
winners. They lack concentration. They lack total
discipline. For all their flair and exuberance, Alex
Ferguson's side lack the crucial ingredient when
trying to prove themselves Europe's best. They lack
a mean streak.
