Alex MacLeish, Brian McClair and Mark McGhee have already been linked with the
Man Utd number two job. However, Paddy Crerand believes Steve Bruce to be the
man for the job. So surely Sheffield United fans can relax in the knowledge
that their boss is staying put.

BREAKING NEWS - Wednesday 09 December 1998
Subject: UNITED FIREPOWER CAN SECURE EURO SURVIVAL
Alex Ferguson is confident his strike force can shoot Manchester United to
Champions' League glory against Bayern Munich on Wednesday.
United need to win the Group D showdown at Old Trafford to ensure a
place in the quarter-finals. A draw may be enough depending on other
results, but United boss Ferguson has set his sights firmly on victory.
United have already scored 52 goals in 25 matches this season, including
a record 19 in their five Champions' League games. They have bagged six in
their two meetings with Barcelona, while they also scored twice against
Bayern in the Olympic Stadium at the end of September.
Twenty-one of those goals have been scored by Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole
and in the 13 games they have started alongside each other they have netted
16 times.
Ferguson is delighted by this strike rate and feels United are capable of
adding to their tally at Old Trafford.
"There has been a good goal threat from us in this competition and we
have looked like scoring all the time," he said.
"If you had said at the start of this group that we would score eight goals
against Barcelona and Bayern Munich in the three matches with one more to
come you would have said how many suns are there in the sky?
"We've scored 52 goals already this season and figures like that tell you
a lot. I've been very pleased with our attacking play and you can't
dispute that."

Sport: Football Ferguson - We're ready
Memories of the night when Bobby Charlton and George
Best were on the scoresheet as Manchester United beat
Benfica 4-1 to lift the European Cup are still vivid for the
fans who witnessed it.
Now a new generation of supporters is eager to see their
team crowned kings of Europe again and United can
take a giant step towards that goal if they beat Bayern
Munich on Wednesday.
Victory in their final Champions League qualifying game
would see them into the last eight.
Alex Ferguson's side have home advantage and a draw
could well be good enough to see them through but the
Scot wants to avoid the possibility of having to qualify
via the back door.
"There has been a good goal threat from us in this
competition and we have looked like scoring all the time.
"If I had said at the start of this group that we would
score eight goals against Barcelona and Bayern Munich in
the three matches with one more to come, you would have
asked how many suns are there in the sky," said Ferguson.
United should have been in an even better position and
Peter Schmeichel's last-minute blunder which enabled
Bayern to snatch a 2-2 draw in Germany, could yet
come back to haunt them.
But Ferguson takes a positive view, saying: "You
go into the Champions' League hoping to take
something from every game and so far we have.
"As for Bayern, they are a very efficient German side -
and that is what you expect. They have a lot of experience
in their team, but I think we are ready for it."
"I don't think they will be killing themselves to beat us.
They will want to make sure they don't lose a goal and I
think they will defend much deeper than Barcelona did
against us."
United are boosted by the return of Welsh international
Ryan Giggs, who missed the last two Champions'
League games after suffering a broken foot.
But they will be on their guard against Bayern's Brazilian international
striker, Elber, who scored both goals in their first meeting.
"In attack, United are very good with David Beckham,
Ryan Giggs and Dwight Yorke, but we see they are
vulnerable in defence. That's why we have a chance in
Manchester," he said.
How United can qualify
Eight teams will go through to the knock-out stages of
the competition; the six qualifying group winners and the
two best-placed runners-up.
German club Kaiserslautern are the only club definitely
though so far, with 16 teams still in contention for the
remaining seven places.
Victory over Bayern Munich would give United top spot in
Group D, but a draw would leave them anxiously
awaiting other results.
They currently have the best goal difference (+9) of the
sides who can still qualify, however, one better than
holders Real Madrid

Subject: Edwards to meet with IMUSA from Teletext:

MANCHESTER UNITED chief executive
Martin Edwards has agreed to meet
supporters opposed to BSkyB's proposed
£623.4m takeover of the club.
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯5/6¯¯
After four years of refusals to even talk to IMUSA (Independent Manchester
United Supporters Association) Martin Edwards has suddenly had a change of
heart and decided he should meet IMUSA. I wonder why? I just hope he listens
a bit better than he did to his own shareholders at the AGM - but sadly I
doubt it. I suspect he just wants to be able to say "You see, I am prepared
to listen to supporters views. However I have not heard anything to make me
change my mind and I am still fully committed to the BSkyB "merger" (was
that OK Mark?)".

Subject: WHO KILLED KIDDO?
Is there life after Old Trafford? It appears not.
Conventional wisdom suggests that ex-Man Utd number two
Brian Kidd has legged it to Blackburn to spend more of
Uncle Jack Walker's loot. Yet several Man Utd players past
and present appear to believe that Kidd has ascended to a
more heavenly plane than Ewood Park.
"I have only been here three months but I feel as though I
have lost a life-long friend," said the Reds' record
signing and now lonesome frontman Dwight Yorke. "I am sure
the rest of the players feel the same way that I do. Brian
will be missed in many ways." Ex-United star and now
occasionally objective media pundit Paddy Crerand went a
step further. "I'm sure Alex never believed that he would
lose his right-hand man," he opined in his weekly column.
"Life goes on, I suppose."
Quick to see a backlash coming, the always dependable Sky
Sports swiftly proclaimed its innocence. Countering rumours
that Kidd had disappeared because he feared he would not
succeed Alex Ferguson if the BSkyB takeover went ahead, Vic
Wakeling, head of Sky Sports, defended his paymasters' lack
of involvement. "This had nothing to do with Sky
whatsoever," he said. "We are not involved because we do
not own the club. I know as much as I have read in the
papers and no-one at Sky knows anything more." And which
papers would those be then?

Subject: KIDDO
After the poor show at Villa on Sat we need to make sure we say our
goodbyes to Kiddo in the proper manner and what better time to do this but
on TV at a big Euro tie.
I have a feeling he'll be there and if he's not, he'll be watching, so we
need to start the ball rolling with a Kiddo:
"Eusebio and I'll say Kiddo" (tune Hello, Goodbye by the Beatles)
We'll spread the song through K Stand and hopefully the rest of the ground
and let him know how we feel.
--------------
KIDDO INFO:
>>>>>>>>>>>>
"We offered him a substantial package but it became very obvious that his
departure had nothing to with remuneration," said Edwards.
>>>>>>>>>>>>
But Kiddo said they didn't, but it wasn't an issue anyway - someone's lying
and I wonder who it could be............
>>>>>>>>>
Edwards also denied any suggestion of intervention on the Kidd situation
from the money men of BSkyB who have put in a bid to take over United.
"That is absolute nonsense," he said.
"I did, out of sheer courtesy, speak to (Sky representative) Mark Booth
about it, and he gave me his backing to make any deal with Brian Kidd that I
thought was suitable.
"We do not have to refer to them. But out of sheer courtesy I did ring him
to tell him exactly what we were doing."
>>>>>>>>
Why did he do this? Hasn't the takeover been put on ice until the MMC have
investigated? So why did Edwards do this surely they have no influence over
United affairs unless they are allowed to take over.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Edwards scotched rumours too that Kidd decided to leave because the door had
been closed on him as a likely successor to Alex Ferguson when the Old
Trafford manager finally calls it a day.
>>>>>>>>>>>
But perhaps if Kiddo had not felt he had no chance of succeeding that would
be the reason for him to leave.
Perhaps Edwards should have consulted with Alex Ferguson instead of Mark
Booth - at least Fergie knows who plays at left back.
--------
Comment by Our Salford Lass:
When asked whether BSkyB intervened in negotiations about Brian Kidd
leaving OT, Martin Edwards is quoted in the Guardian this morning as saying:
"That is absolute nonsense"
However, he then goes on to say:
"I did, out of sheer courtesy, speak to (Sky's representative) Mark Booth
about it and he gave me his backing to make any deal with Brian Kidd that I
thought was suitable."
What I'd like to know is this - if the takeover has lapsed (if only
temporarily), why is he even speaking to Mark Booth about club matters?
Surely this matter should have been a confidential one between the club and
Brian Kidd and of no interest whatsoever to any outside party?
I also note that Kidd said he was offered no more money and Edwards says he
was. I know who I believe.

Subject: Dec 8th 1997 From: "Coppack"
Well, today is a momentus occasion. Well, it is for me anyway. Dec 8th, the
day that Mc John Lennon was shot down in 1980 outside his home by Mark
David Chapman, it is also Brian McClair's birthday if I am not mistaken.
However for me, those memories pale into insignificance when I remember Dec
8th, 1997. One year ago to this day I saw Old Trafford for the first time
in my life. I have written previoulsly about my first trip to OT but I will
reproduce it again below. There's no way I'll forget this day, to me Dec
8th is as important a date as my birthday.
Let me set the scene. At 5:00pm, there is a knock at the door of the house
in which I am staying in Chester. I open the door to find a strange,
balding man wearing a Macnhester United sweater standing on the doorstep -
Pete Hargreaves! (sorry Pete!) I rush upstairs to grab my coat and head
off up the Motorway to the city of Manchester. The youth team is playing
Blackburn in an FA Youth Cup Second Round Replay - the first leg being in
Blackburn on a night that according to Pete was 'bloody freezing'.
We arrive at Pete's Mum and Dad's place at around 6.00pm and after taking
one look at me his Mum decides that my coat 'just won't do'. It's a light
'Umbro' jacket which truth be told, was rather futile against the cold
winter of England. "Can you grab a coat for young Nick, dear" Pete's Mum
calls out to her husband. I begin to protest, not wanting to put them to
any trouble, saying that it will be alright and that I'll be warm enough
but think better of it when I catch a glimpse of the lovely, warm coat that
Hal (Pete's Dad) is bringing down from upstairs. I shut up and accept the
coat without any fuss.
On the way to Old Trafford Pete is trying to work out which route to take.
He is trying to pick the route which would build the suspense the most but
in truth, all I want to do is see the stadium as soon as possible. I'm like
a little kid in the backseat of the car, looking in every direction, trying
to see anything which might indicate that the great stadium is near.
We park about a mile from the ground and walk the rest of the way. I
remember turning into Warwick Road from Talbot Road (correct me f I'm
wrong) and just being shocked. There it was! Just a few hundred yards away.
In the past I had spent hours just looking at pictures of Old Trafford,
wondering just what it was really like. Now, it stood before me, in all its
glory. I must have looked pretty stupid, walking down the road just staring
with a big smile on my face! I remember thinking to myself, "This is the
greatest moment in my life and then thinking that to Pete and Hal this was
just another night. How lucky these people were! Did they know what I was
feeling, could they possibly imagine how much I had longed for this
moment?"
As we stepped onto the forecourt at Old Trafford I had to try and remember
where I was, that I was in public and it probably wouldn't be a good idea
to just let all my emotions loose and start kissing the ground, yelling at
the top of my voice and bowing down before the statue of Sir Matt. Somehow,
I managed to restrain myself and then I did the best bit of business I had
ever, and probably ever will do, in my life. "One pound thankyou", said the
man at the turnstile. Wow! If someone had asked me a year ago how much I
would have paid to see Manchester United's youth side play at Old Trafford
I would have said 100 pounds. It cost me just one pound to fulfil my dream
(let's just forget about the 500 it cost me to fly there for a minute).
I went through the turnstile, meeting up with Hal and Pete on the other
side, and we made our way through to the area beneath the South stand. Just
10 more steps and i'd be viewing the pitch! One...two...three...(Is that
the North Stand I can see?).....four...five...six.....(Wow, that stand is
huge)....seven....eight.....nine....(Here we go!).....TEN. As I stood at
the top of the stairs taking in the stadium, the term "Theatre of Dreams"
rang totally true. If I looked stupid walking up Warwick Road with that
smile then I don't know how to describe the look on my face now! I think I
just stood there for a while, gaping in awe, admiring the pitch, the stands
and just breathing in the atmosphere. Sure, there were only 3-4000 people
there but it didn't matter one bit. I was at Old Trafford, I was happy.
Pete eventually managed to get some life out of me by telling me to
position myself so the Stretford End was at my back and took a photo. I
remember his words," Well, this is it. So what do you think?".
"It's brilliant, absolutely brilliant" I replied. We took our seats in the
South Stand, just to the left of the halfway line, about half way up. I
looked across to the Scoreboard End and saw what looked like about 2,000
teenagers, about my age, sitting in their seats. Again, I wondered whether
they knew how lucky they were to be here. After all, to them this was ONLY
a Youth Match. Some probably stay at home on occasions when asked if they
want to go see United's Youth team play. Me, well, I'd jump at the chance
to see a team of 3 year olds play in the Red colours of Macnhester.
It wasn't too long before the two teams came out and prepared to do batte
against each other. To be honest, I don't remember too much about the game
except that Blackburn went 2-0 up courtesy of two bad defensive errors. I
remember that their forward, a big 'Duncan Ferguson' clone, was dirty, real
dirty. He was coming in late with tackles, leaving his elbows up when
jumping for headers and doing his utmost to get sent-off it seemed.
At half-time, it was still 2-0 and to be honest, it wasn't looking good.
However, after the break United came out firing, attacking the Stretford
End and playing some of the best football I had seen. We were pounding them
with raid after raid of attacks and it was no surprise when we went ahead.
It was a brilliant goal scored by Alex Notman who impressed me all game. A
curling free kick, about 22 yards out, ten yards off centre.
We continued to press forward, searching for that gaol which would force
the tie into extra-time and we found it through Michael Ryan when he
touched in a cross after good work down the right hand side. He had made
the mistake which led to the first Rover's goal but now he had redeemed
himself. After 90 minutes the score was 1-1 which meant extra-time would be
played. I couldn't believe it, my one pound had been stretched even further
now, buying me 120 minutes of football and not 90.
There were no goals in the first period of extra-time but three minutes
into the second half disaster struck. United scored an own goal, Lee Roche
(I think) chipping his own goalkeeper from outside the area! It was a
bizarre goal and the team just couldn't lift enough to score again. The
final whistle blew, United knocked out of the Cup on my first visit.
Nevertheless, three players had impressed me from the Red's line-up. Alex
Notman, the scorer of the first goal - a great striker with an incredible
first touch. Richard Wellens, a tough tackling midfielder in the mould of
Nicky Butt and Wes Brown, a confident sweeper/defender who probably is the
nest of them all.
Don't be surprised if these three become the next heroes of Old Trafford.
At about 9:20pm we left the ground and trudged back to the car, parked
oustide the Throstles Nest. We weren't too disappointed as the boys' second
half performance was outstanding. Back at the Throstles I forced myself to
drink a pint of Boddington's (after all, what's a trip to Manchester
without a drink of Boddies) and watched the last 15 minutes of Sheffield
Wednesday v Barnsley on the big screen.
At 10:00pm we dropped Hal back home along with the jacket I had borrowed,
had a cup of tea and set off for Chester. I arrived in at 11:30pm, home
from the best day of my life and went straight upstairs to dream about
playing at the Theatre of Dreams.
