Subject: Saints or Suckers Personal report by "RED KELLY" Going down to the Dell has been a traumatic experience of late, so it was with a certain amount of apprehension that we approached this Saturday afternoon's excursion. It started off a cold morning in the mIdlands as I set off down the M40. But the traffic was sparse so the travelling made easy and as I drove into Newbury past the Rising Sun pub at the roundabout, a chink of light appeared from behind the clouds. By the time I'd joined up with BDS and young Hennessey just outside Winchester the sun was shining brightly and the afternoon started as it was due to continue. BDS was having a snooze as I pulled my car alongside his in Tesco's carpark. He'd had a hard night's drinking the night before, but by the time I'd relieved myself in the store toilets he'd recovered and the phone in my pocket sounded as I walked back through the parked cars. A bizarre few seconds passed while he realised he was not only talking to me on the telephone but also looking straight at me while I walked towards him. The man's constitution amazes me as it only takes a few minutes sleep to restore him to full working order, so we all piled in his car and drove the remaining few miles to Southampton. He had arranged to park up at a friends house who lives not a stones throw from the ground. From there we spent an hour standing outside the pub in the sunshine mixing happily with the locals. A group of plods did troop in at one time when the singing became too loud for the sensitive locals, but left again after issuing earplugs to the bar staff. It all made a pleasant change from last years brass monkey weather which was the coldest I'd ever experienced at a game. This year the sunshine lead us to believe it was time United ended this poor run of results in this neck of the woods. The presence of the Boston Red formally known as jinx didn't deter us from our optimism. Inside the ground the atmosphere was good and we stood unhindered for once. The most any steward did was to tell us to keep the aisles clear. It was a pleasant change from Highbury where there were problems from start to finish. I can't help feeling that if the stadium supervisors all came to their senses and allowed us to police ourselves there would be no trouble at all, but unfortunately that isn't usually the case as it was yesterday at the Dell. Truth be known, they were probably grateful for any one to go there. The Archers to our right were really wound up for this one believing they had a chance to make it four in a row and after a couple of minutes when Howells had a free header from six yards and put it over the top, we wondered. Ostenstad was putting himself about making up for the absence of Hughsie who we were told had not played well since his signing. At one point he remonstrated with the linesman on our side so vehemently that I marvelled at the lack response especially when he petulantly fluttered his flag! The linesman was impassive throughout - a passionless creature all the more forlorn as he'd been forced to don an appaling blue top because United played in black. It wasn't long though before Andy crossed from the left and Dwight slid in at the near post to put us one up and eased our fears. After the fiasco over his ticket for the scouse game which resulted in a most ridiculous chain of events and eventual exclusion from that game I felt most pleased for Sean who was standing next to me. At that moment he had a grin which almost split his face in half and his bear hug nearly broke my bloody back! The fun had only just begun but the ball pinged around all over the place and the score could have been much higher before the half time whistle blew. Over to our right the Archers became more and more agitated which resulted in one or two ejections after the obligatory Munich jibes. We stood defiantly singing the Red Flag at the tops of our voices whilst staring them in the face. Everything is so close down there that it feels at times that you are actually nose to nose and that was one of those times as we glared at them. It shut them up completely for a while so passionate was the rendition. Half time came and we made our way to the toilets which consist of space enough for 4 standing at any one time and a quaint single door opening up to a single sit down toilet for the desperate. The steward appointed to police the queue was the subject of much merriment as he had obviously been stuck in a time warp since the seventies. His wavy shoulder length hair and moustache were the evidence damning him to merciless, but good natured ribbing behind his back. The plods were taking it all in their stride and joining in with the humour. One in particular was relishing the mickey taking saying he couldn't care less about Southampton or football so we could say anything we wanted and it would make no impression on him whatsoever! Humour amongst the police - what the hell is the world coming to down there - they really are stuck in a time warp! As we resumed our places before the start of the second half the United players were already out and the PA announcer was attempting to wind up the crowd. "Cam on yooooooou Saaaaaaints. Cam own make a noooooise. Cam own yooooou Arches suuuuck the ball in the net. Yoou know it can work!" And the crowd duly responded with loud cheers and loud sucking noises as their favourites took the field. The Saints started the second half just as they started the first with a flurry of action which nearly lead to an equaliser. For a while it seemed all that sucking was working. It took us a while to get going again and the action was swift and breakaways at both ends. At 59 minutes I looked up at the stadium clock and thought to myself if we can survive the next minute we will be OK. Why I thought that so specifically at that moment I don't know but as I turned away from the clock Blomqvist was jinking his way past two defenders and passing through to Andy who curled the ball into the top corner of the subbuteo net to our right. I looked up briefly at the clock as it changed to 60 minutes. The relief felt all around us manifested itself in wild celebrations and if my back had nearly been broken after the first goal it barely survived the second. From that moment the carnival began. There followed a most pleasurable half hour spent winding up those to our right - and didn't they respond well!! "2-0 up in a different kit" we sang at the tops of our voices. Roy Keane broke through shortly afterwards and the ball was put out for a corner in front of us. Over came Becks. Cue predictable jeering from the locals and cheers from the Reds. The smile on Becks face was a picture as he revelled in the attention and ignoring the front page of the Sun newspaper being waved in front of his face no more than four feet away. Funny way for a prospective owner to treat a future employee by stirring up trouble between him and his fiancee. "You can stick your f**king England up your arse" we sang, and "you've only come to see United". The response was perfect for another retort, "we're English and proud of it" they sang. "Ar-gen-tina, Ar-gen-tina" we chanted back. They went berserk and tried taunting us with more Munich references, "you've only come to see the Argies" we sang. By this time there wasn't one person around us who didn't wear a huge grin. It was wonderful fun. Time and time again we sang, "you've only come to see the Argies, you've only come to see the Argies," culminating in "are you England in disguise." It drove them mental. One woman in particular who I remember from last year could hardly contain herself, if she didn't suffer serious blood pressure after yesterday it would have to be a miracle. The overweight bloke to her left wearing the home shirt was attempting to calm her down. How he could possibly even pretend to be serious wearing stripes that were stretched so tight over his ample paunch that they resembled concentric circles, I'll never know. We were so involved with the banter that we hadn't even noticed United had made substitutions so when I thought I saw Henning Berg run on to a ball in the penalty area I was even more shocked to see it was actually Jordi Cruyff and even more shocked when the ball ended up in the back of the net. He came over to us with grinning all over his face and was surrounded by the rest of the team each congratulating him in turn obviously delighted at his moment of glory. There followed the piece de resistance as far as the singing went, to the tune of "Chirpy, chirpy, cheep cheep" we sang "even Jordi scores, even Jordi scores". The end of the game couldn't come quick enough for the Saints, but we were happy at the Ding Dong Dell at long last. Back in the car BDS phones home and chats with his young daughter, "what do you think of scousers" he asks - an emphatic raspberry was the reply!! I was dropped back at the Tesco carpark, wished Sean a good journey back to Boston and made my way home. The journey was uneventful and the tedium broken only by one amusing sight just outside Oxford - beside a large parked van there were a row of nine or ten men stood, backs to the road, all in line, pissing up against a fence. Subject: Man Utd seek to reassure fans on BSkyB deal By Keith Weir LONDON, Oct 5 - English soccer giants Manchester United Plc on Monday moved to reassure fans and shareholders about the impact of a planned billion dollar takeover of the club by Rupert Murdoch-controlled pay TV firm BSkyB Plc. Sir Roland Smith, chairman of the United Plc board, said BSkyB would not interfere in team affairs and transfer policy if the deal goes through. "(Manager) Alex Ferguson will be in charge of team selection. Alex Ferguson and the Board of Manchester United will be responsible for the acquisition of new players," Smith wrote in a document sent to shareholders outlining the bid. Smith added that ticket prices for matches at United's Old Trafford home would not be affected by the bid. He stressed that the current United management team of Chief Executive Martin Edwards, his deputy Peter Kenyon and Finance Director David Gill would continue to oversee the day-to-day running of the club. The announcement last month that the United board was recommending acceptance of a bid worth more than 620 million pounds ($1.05 billion) from satellite broadcaster BSkyB, 40 percent owned by Murdoch's News Corp, initially sparked protest from fans' groups in the northern English city. They voiced fears that BSkyB, which has the TV rights to live premier league action, was getting too strong a grip on the English game. However, protests have since died down a little. Smith wrote in the offer document that the proposed deal did not mean that United games would be screened only on a pay-per-view basis -- noting that BSkyB was committed to showing 60 games per season on its existing subscription services. Smith pointed out that United had no right of veto in respect to the future sale of rights by the 20 clubs in the premier league. The current BSkyB contract runs until 2001. The United/BSkyB link prompted a flurry of activity in the sector as other media companies began to seek deals with rival clubs. Soccer has been one of the main drivers of the development of pay TV in Britain and the move to multi-channel digital TV makes the control of rights even more important. Britain's Office of Fair Trading is currently looking at the planned BSkyB/United deal. Analysts say it is very hard to predict if the OFT will recommend clearance of the deal or further scrutiny by the Monopolies and Mergers Commission. The OFT has an initial deadline of October 12 to report to the government's Department of Trade and Industry but can stretch that to November 2. The initial deadline for acceptance of the bid by United shareholders is October 26.

Subject: SCHMEICHEL BACK FOR DENMARK? Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel is set to return to action sooner than initially thought. Denmark keeper Schmeichel suffered a stomach muscle injury in the 2-2 Champions' League draw at Bayern Munich. Old Trafford boss Alex Ferguson had not expected the 34-year-old to play again until after the FA Carling Premiership clash against Wimbledon on October 17. But Ferguson said: “Peter has gone to Denmark for treatment for a stomach muscle injury from the national team doctor. He won't play against Wales this Saturday but could be back for Denmark when they face Switzerland the following week (October 14).”

Subject: Bosnich to snub United «« Bosnich to snub United «« Aston Villa keeper Mark Bosnich is apparently ready to turn down the chance of a move to Manchester United and leave for Italy. Despite interest from Old Trafford AS Roma are reportedly willing to offer the Aussie, who is out of contract at Villa Park at the end of the season, an £8m package to make the move to Serie A. United boss Alex Ferguson has apparently had talks with a view to bringing in Bosnich, who began his career at Old Trafford, next summer when he will be available on a free under the Bosman ruling. But Roma are said to be ready to offer the controversial keeper an astonishing £4m signing-on fee and a four-year deal worth another £4m to make the move to Italy. Should United fail to persuade Bosnich to come to United as a long term replacement for Peter Schmeichel, Ferguson will set his sights on Ipswich's highly rated keeper Richard Wright. The 20-year-old England U-21 international is rated at £6m by the First Division side.

Subject: No place for Sir Bobby Teamtalk reports: >>Arguably United's all-time greatest player, Sir Bobby Charlton, is apparently about to be snubbed by the club and its new owners. It is almost certain that there will be no place for United's 1968 European Cup winning skipper on the new football club board to be set up after the completion of the sale of the club to BSkyB for £625m. Provisionally, the plan is for the board to consist of four of United's existing directors - Martin Edwards, Phil Kenyon, Maurice Watkins and Mike Edelson - and four representatives from BSkyB. It is thought that an honourary position could be offered to Sir Bobby instead, a fitting reward to a man who continues to be a club ambassador worldwide.<< Surely this is cause for worry? Of all the people concerned, Sir Bobby would be best charged with seeing to the best interests of the club, and if they don't want him on the board, then they're up to something. Ethel

Subject: United in American Cartoon The Tank McNamara archive is available at http://www.uexpress.com/ups/comics/tm/ieindex.html However the strips appear a couple of weeks after they are printed in the press. The latest available today is 18 September. Here in the states, there is a sports cartoon called Tank McNamara that pokes fun at all the craziness in sports. Well, United made today's edition. Over the past few days, the running joke has been that baseball is trying to make their sport more like other sports so people will watch it. So they decide that if the game is tied after 12 innings to have penalty kicks. ANYWAY, that's just to set it up. So today it says, "One member of the Famous Manchester United English soccer club will be assigned to each team in the playoffs." The other guy asks, "Just Manchester United?" The first guy replies with a rasied eyebrow, "Fox strongly suggested it and Fox is paying for the games." That tempered my excitement a little. It's odd that they would mention that, since the Murdoch buyout has made VERY little news here, at least in the three Michigan papers I read each day. By the way, this was in the Detroit Free Press (www.freep.com), but I don't know if they put this cartoon on the web site or not. Other papers in the country might. Gary

From: Tim Olson Subject: Red for life (How I became a Red) Reds, Of course every Red has their story of how the fell in love with Man Utd., from being born in Manchester to being attracted to the team's colours, and so on. I thought I'd share my story with the rest of you, although it isn't all that exciting or anything. Right, having lived in Europe as a kid, I was exposed to the beautiful game of footie at an early age. When I moved back to the States, I ran into a bit of a problem. Footie on TV was very rare, there were no fields around here, and even when the World Cup was hosted here in '94, there was no mentioning of it in the local papers. However, with the popularity of soccer increasing in the US, the coverage of the sport started to increase as well. In the summer of 1997, the Umbro Cup tournament was carried by the local Fox Sports channels. Then, with the addition of ESPN2, I was able to watch more European club football in general. My interest grew rapidly, and I tried to watch every match that was shown on television. As I watched, several clubs caught my eye, but on in particular stood out from the rest of the crowd. I watched the team win, I watched the team loose, and I was falling in love with the club. It was Manchester United. Although I was still learning, my knowledge of European club football was fairly limited. All I knew about Manchester United was that they played in England, and I could remember the names of the players. For all I knew, Manchester United could have been a Division 3 club at the bottom of the table, although they certainly did not play like it. Had it turned out to be true that the club I love was a Division 3 club at the bottom of the table, I wouldn't have cared. I started searching the net for information on my favourite club. I started checking several Man Utd. related sites on a regular basis, and joined several mailing lists. Whenever there was a match on TV involving Manchester United, I watched and taped it. There is not exact date on which I became a supporter; I just became one over time. I may only be a long-distance supporter, sitting in front of the TV or the computer in a United kit. I may have never been to Manchester in my life, and I may not get a chance to go to Old Trafford in the near future. I may have been a supporter for only a year...but one thing is for certain: Manchester United for life. Cheers, Tim, USA Red
