Subject: GINOLA JOY FOR GEORGE TOTTENHAM 3 MANCHESTER UNITED 1 David Ginola capped a fine display with an outstanding goal, his first of the season, as Tottenham overcame a weakened Manchester United side to reach the Worthington Cup Semi-Finals. George Graham's side now face Wimbledon across two legs, and must be favourites to lift the trophy and qualify for Europe. Chris Armstrong struck twice in seven minutes at the start of the second half to put Spurs ahead. The in-form striker scored with a pair of brilliant headers. Although Teddy Sheringham pulled Alex Ferguson's patch-work team of youth and experience back into the match with another powerful header with 20 minutes left - a goal he celebrated with a defiant fist-clenching gesture to the Tottenham fans who had jeered his every touch - it was not enough to deny Graham's team. Because with four minutes to go the mercurial Ginola struck a sweet left-foot 25-yarder past Raimond van der Gouw to clinch it. The first period was disappointing, but the game came to life after the interval. Allan Nielsen had missed two decent first-half opportunities to turn the tie Spurs' way but two minutes after the break he chipped into the box from out on the left. Ruel Fox, who had replaced Colin Calderwood in midfield, helped the ball on for Armstrong to head firmly past Van Der Gouw for his seventh goal of the season and third in consecutive games. United had an immediate chance to equalise when Nicky Butt's pass found Phil Neville, whose shot was only a yard wide of the target with goalkeeper Ian Walker beaten. But in the 54th minute Armstrong came up trumps again with his head. This time Ginola teased and tormented Jon Greening out on the left and whipped the ball over waist-high for Armstrong to dive in front ahead of Ronny Johnsen and defeat Van Der Gouw again. The contest looked over but it could have been different if Butt, put in by Greening, had not wasted a golden opportunity in the 65th minute, half-volleying wastefully over the bar. And Iversen spurned the chance to wrap it up completely for Spurs, stabbing wide from three yards after Ginola's cross took out Johnsen and Henning Berg. Tottenham were briefly on the back foot when Sheringham converted Neville's left wing cross with a decisive 70th minute header but then Ginola came up with the finishing touch which boss Graham had demanded he add to his silky skills and Spurs were on their way to the last four. Ryan Giggs backed off as the Frenchman picked up the ball 30 yards out. Ginola stepped into the space and smacked a wicked curling shot to confirm his man-of-the-match status.

Edwards said: "He wants to progress his career and he wants to have the chance of being a number one. "He wants that opportunity to speak to them and so reluctantly we have agreed to that. Kidd agreed to sign a contract that runs until June 2002 after holding talks with Rovers owner Jack Walker at Ewood Park. He has been Alex Ferguson's number two at Old Trafford for seven years but has now decided to strike out on his own. Hodgson was dismissed in the wake of Blackburn's home defeat against Southampton, which sent Rovers to the bottom of the Premiership. Blackburn officials were locked in top level negotiations with Kidd before Walker emerged to say: "Brian was always our first choice, and I am delighted he has accepted." Kidd will take a back seat for this weekend's vital Premiership match at home to Charlton, with caretaker boss Tony Parkes remaining in charge. A statement from Blackburn read: "Following successful discussions Brian Kidd has accepted the position as manager here and has signed a contract to June 30 2002." Parkes will prepare the players and select the side for the Charlton match. Kidd will be introduced to the crowd by Walker before the game. United were desperate to keep Kidd and only reluctantly agreed to let him talk to Blackburn. Now United must search for a new number two to Ferguson with Saturday's top-of-the-table clash with Aston Villa and next Wednesday's crucial Champions' League clash with Bayern Munich looming large. United chief executive Martin Edwards admitted that Kidd's departure would be a big blow to the club. Only last week Edwards claimed the only way Kidd would leave United would be "over my dead body". The Turkish side's late strike will be a disappointment to Manchester United, who must now win their last game at home to Bayern Munich next week to guarantee a place in the last eight. From: Steve Edge Subject: Another brick out of the wall I am very sad that Kiddo has left us. He was a great Manchester United player and coach. A Red through and through. Now he's gone. Money lured him away. Good luck to him, though. Perhaps he will be back. (perhaps he'll do a Steve Coppell when he realises what a crap club he's joined!) This season has been very traumatic so far. We are still faced with the appalling prospect of becoming a pawn in Murdoch's money game. Schmikes is leaving us at the end of the season. Our European prospects continue to teeter on the edge of calamity. We've been stuffed twice by the Arse. The pitch has been ripped up and replaced by a new patchwork quilt. Injuries continue to plague the club - thankfully, we have a bit more cover this season. Becks is still pilloried. Stam is getting a lot more stick than he deserves. Cole, too. We don't have a replacement for either Schmikes or Kiddo. And Spurs are after Ole once more. It's time to circle the wagons again. So, where is the Bright Side of Life? Or should I say the Dwight side? (I think there's a song in there ... !!) Well, we're still in contention for a European Cup Quarter Final spot (it's in our hands). We're handily placed in the league. We don't have to worry about the Fizzy Beer Cup any more. Giggs, Johnsen and Sheringham appear to be on the mend. We're playing quite well. Yorke is amazing! The prospects are still good, it seems. But it just doesn't feel right, does it? Perhaps Fergie's empire is starting to crumble. Steve Edge Vancouver Red

Subject: Soccer showcase-Villa seek memorable summit meeting with United By Chris Moore BIRMINGHAM, England, Dec 3 - Aston Villa and Manchester United, currently first and second in the premier league, are two of the giants of English soccer but have little in the way of traditional rivalry. They have both won the European Cup, and both won the still rarely-achieved English League and Cup double, as well, at different times, holding the record number of wins in the F.A. Cup. Villa had already won the league five times and the F.A. Cup four, including the double in 1897, before United lifted their first piece of silverware in 1908. Villa won the league again in 1910, and after being pipped by United by a point in 1911, had to wait another 70 years for their seventh title, in 1981. Manchester United, meanwhile developed into Enland's most famous club, and went on to overhaul Villa's old record of seven F.A. Cup victories, which has since also been overtaken by Tottenham Hotspur. During nearly a century of competing however, both clubs have concentrated their rivalries elsewhere. United fans scan the fixture list -- or used to -- for the derby with cross-town rivals Manchester City and for the games against Liverpool. Villa have been starved of local rivalry since the demise of Birmingham City and West Bromwich Albion and have had to satisfy local pride by beating Coventry and Leicester. However, there are still one or two games between Villa and United that go down as classics. One came on January 10, 1948, in the third round of the F.A. Cup. Villa went ahead after 13 seconds -- still the fastest ever F.A. Cup goal -- but by halftime trailed 5-1. A second half fightback brought them back into the match at back to 5-4 but United scored again to win 6-4. They went on to win the Cup that year, beating first division opponents in every round -- an achievement that has never been equalled. Villa gained a measure of revenge in 1957 when they beat United 2-1 in the F.A. Cup final -- ruining United's hopes of becoming the first club to do the double since Villa in the previous century. In the 1964-65 season United thrashed the Midlanders 7-0 at Old Trafford and the following year walloped them 6-1. A year later United won the league and went on to their greatest triumph, the European Cup, in 1968. Villa went the other way, suffering relegation in 1967 and slipping into the old third division in 1970. The two finally met again in the 1974-75 season after travelling in opposite directions to the second division and both won promotion. Villa then set about their climb to the pinacle of Europe, winning the championship in 1981 and emulating United's 1968 European Cup success by winning the trophy themselves in 1982. United, finally, emerged as the dominant club in England in the 1990s but Villa denied Alex Ferguson the chance of an historic treble in 1994 when they won the League Cup final 3-1 at Wembley - under former United boss Ron Atkinson. Villa lifted that trophy again two years as United won the League and F.A. Cup double for a second time. Now Villa are back in contention for the league title and know that Saturday's game will go some way towards proving their credentials. Defeat to Liverpool and a draw with Nottingham Forest have sharpened the pens of the critics and allowed second-placed United to close to within a point. But should Villa pull off the victory on Saturday, and go on to win the championship, then this fixture may finally earn an historical significance -- at least on the Holte End.
